Looking forward to this for ages. Anyone heard it yet?

Brian Best (ukb), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

Not me - but there's a decent thread about it on Dissensus, which includes some comment from folks who HAVE heard it.

tiss (tiss), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

not heard it, but the title is a bit corny. might as well have called it adventures in retro futurism: from ancient to phuture' or something. im sure it will be good though.

the grime subgenre known as dubstep - search and destroy

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

(only the last post on that thread)

MAH played a track on the Breezeblock a couple of weeks ago but it didn't sink in enough for me to recall it. based on everything i've heard recently (mainly dubstep allstars 4 and the garage pressure shows) the whole thing is moving away from the aspects i liked...

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

hey, here's one take of a kode 9/dubstep mix i did late the other night
download it here: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?actionfiltered=download&ufid=BBD003B110B06C15&rcpt=shr_vari@yahoo.co.uk

i'll send the traxlist to anyone who gives some comments, the mixing isn't hot but the tunes are some of my favourite..its starts with daddee g and kode 9 'stalker'
nice one, i love this forum, i've finally bothered to contribute

I reckon it has some of the cheesiest album Art I've seen since some early-90s Fantazia rave tape multipack, but still fairly excited. To be honest tho I suspect Pinch and Distance's respective albums on Planet Mu will blow this out of the water...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

And will subsequently be blown out the water by Skream, brrrrrrap.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Although that release date has been pushed back more than Moe Green's wig.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

When is Skream releasing it? Is it on Tempa or what?

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

On Tempa, I think October 16th.

"The album’s lowlight is "Summer Dreamz. . . (b)uilt around Rhodes chords, a 2step beat and a meandering live trumpet solo, it is eight minutes of "jazzy" coffee table fodder best left to late 90s dance producer longplayers."

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

I bet dolphin dubstep is coming NEXT!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think someone posted that on here already. He plays that song in his mixes quite often, it's decent. If it's the nadir of the album's tracks then I'm far from worried. A great deal of the tracks are going to be reworkings of tracks he's caned on his rinse shows anyway, so if you've enjoyed them you'll like the album.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Martin Clark wrote that line about the Skream album - it's from his This Month In Grime/Dubstep I think - and he has a lot of fairly strong positions on these types of issues (not a diss, just context).

The Kode9 album is v. good, except for the old dubby tracks which I find increasingly boring.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

I have pretty strong feelings about those types of issues. That track sound boring as hell.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 07:08 (nineteen years ago)

Which older tracks are you talking about?

Brian Best (ukb), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

Sine of the dub etc I would presume. They are ideal opening tracks to a Dj set, but en masse they could easily bog down an album fo sho.

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Martin Clark wrote that line about the Skream album - it's from his This Month In Grime/Dubstep I think - and he has a lot of fairly strong positions on these types of issues

I think this is probably why I take issue with the statement so much. I just can't seem to get on with Blackdown. He knows what he's talking about but I don't like the style of his writing or his productions and tend to disagree with a lot of his opinions.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Thursday, 14 September 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

Well if the Skream track is anything like that Horsepower Productions rainforest track then Martin's distaste will be justified.

On the other hand a lot of great music could also fit that description.

I wonder if Martin likes any opulent laidback stuff? I'm trying to imagine if he would like the Jazzanova remix of MJ Cole's "Sincere", for instance.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 September 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

I love it Tim, but not as much as the original, or their remix of Ian Pooley.

martin (martin), Thursday, 14 September 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I had this feeling you might. Maybe because at their best Jazzanova are quite explicitly otherworldly?

I'm interested to work out what you/we mean when you/we say "coffee table" - there's an implied er homeliness to the criticism perhaps.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 September 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

Surely you understand "coffee table" Tim? it's the act of sonic dilution/softening that producers apply to previously rough urban club music to make it pallatable in coffee bars, polite living rooms, corporate elevators, adverts etc. The Photek --> Everything But the Girl (circa d&b phaze) transition.

It also signals the implied "musican" mindstate that producers often fall into when they make an album. "I know, if I make a 'jazzy' track, people will respect me as a 'proper musician.'"

Anyway it would be sad and wrong to focus soley on this track on the Skream LP, let alone at the expense of Kode 9's great LP too. The Skream LP has some killers on it, most of all the rarely effective grime/dubstep interaction the JME vocal of "Tapped."

Is it totally redundant to say there's a very Tricky vibe to some of this?

eh (fandango), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

redundant in what way?

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

as in staggeringly obvious, not even worth mentioning?

maybe it's that the paranoid & alienated vibe Tricky was riffing on seemed out of step or far-fetched/weed-induced back in 1995, but now the world has caught up with his postmodern dread by going to absolute shit politically speaking, it seems totally fitting and nessecary? I like this album though, it is very trip-hop to my ears but not in a retro/lazy way.

eh (fandango), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

"maybe it's that the paranoid & alienated vibe Tricky was riffing on seemed out of step or far-fetched/weed-induced back in 1995"

It did?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Its relevant as a comparison but it reminds me how fucking excellently engineered "Maxinquaye" is, how fat and lush and well constructed it is, in comparison with something like this (good as it is it sounds cheapo and rickety)

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Are you listening to MP3s of it though? I hope the record doesn't sound like that.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - well, in the middle of "cool Brittania" (retch) even in the middle of Trip-Hop as a product of post-rave comedown melancholy, Tricky felt like he was pulling away from sanity a little further/harder than the rest of us...

I dunno about cheapo and rickety, I thought "Maxinquaye" was going for that slowly disintegrating sound junkyard feeling, it came out a bit more pop than I think he was happy with in retrospect (going by interviews anyway) but I think it was a stab at organised chaos much more than what gekoppel describes. This Kode 9 record feels much more zesty and spare. Maybe it's the fruityloops treble?

eh (fandango), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

It is mp3s, I'm wondering if something hasn't been seriously lost in the bass department too fwiw. It still feels quite complete though oddly.

eh (fandango), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

when i was listening to this last night i was thinking "tricky, tricky, tricky" as well! it may well be redundant but it's less to do with the music than the spaceape's vocals, which are like a less psychotic tricky circa pre-millennium tension or nearly god (i don't think maxinquaye is the best comparator).

really awesome late night wandering music.

eh (fandango), Friday, 13 October 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

not that Dubstep can't be boring of course, don't think anyone wins in a bad Dubstep vs. shitty annoying Grime contest.

eh (fandango), Friday, 13 October 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

no you see i KNOW arctic monkeys are the worst band ever. it's REALLY OBVIOUS.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 13 October 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

The CD version of the Kode9 album sounds well-produced I think, but Maxinquaye is such a succulent album that it's probably a bit of a high standard to use.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 October 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

-- gekoppel (inabeautifulplaceinthecountr...), October 12th, 2006.

Gek i dont know if you read the Wire interview with Kode but interestingly he mentions how much he liked Wiley and Jammer's Sinogrime experiements exactly because they sounded cheapo and perhaps rickety...

martin (martin), Friday, 13 October 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yes I did read that Wire piece... he also said that he prefers the synthetics of grime to the more sample based sonics of Dubstep, so I can see what he was going for with his album (though actually Dubstep is just as synthetic as Grime as far as I can make out in terms of the origins of its sounds). Maxinquaye is definitely attempting a decaying junkyard atmosphere (see Ian Penman's proto-hauntological tract from the time of that album's release in The Wire). It remains a pleasingly fat listen, in engineering terms.

"I don't like the style of his writing"
blackdown obviously knows all his shit but i find his writing trapped between wanting to say what he really thinks and knowing he has to work with all these people cos hes 'part of the scene' so it ends up feeling a bit compromised.

only heard this kode 9 album a few times but i find the production a bit 'small' and budget. im all for being low fi and not glossy but that doesnt mean it has to be cheapo.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

That tune Portal on the album is amazing, musically and vocally.

Brian Best (ukb), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

another case of a terrible rip this. I've not heard the CD but the 10"s sound a hell of a lot better than the 192 album mp3s. if you're not listening to those, claims it's badly produced are mystifying to me.

a (rslvd), Thursday, 9 November 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

that rip I downloaded is flat as a pancake compared to the CD indeed. I like this album a lot.

Is there such a thing as an instrumental version of this? The music's generally excellent, but the Spaceape (if that is his real name) gets seriously grating after a track or two. He's good in the odd guest spot, but really not for a whole LP.

We are devastated to announce that on Thursday 2nd October, Stephen Samuel Gordon aka The Spaceape, vocalist, poet and live performer, passed away peacefully after a 5 year struggle with a rare form of cancer.
He leaves behind his wife Luciana and 6 year old daughter, Cleo. His first release was the 1st release on Hyperdub, 'Sine of the Dub' in 2004 with Kode9, with whom he also released 2 albums, Memories of the Future (2006) and Black Sun (2011).
In 2012 he also self-released the Xorcism EP, appeared on the track 'Spaceape' on Burial's debut album in 2006, and also collaborated with The Bug, Martyn, Jerry Dammers, Redshape, Dub Gabriel, the Echologist and more. Last Monday he released his new EP with Kode9, 'Killing Season' including the video 'Devil is a Liar' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dtc4Y4Xyjo which was filmed in July 2014.
Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends, and all who have been touched by his writings and performances. His Hyperdub family will always miss him.
