MAH played a track on the Breezeblock a couple of weeks ago but it didn't sink in enough for me to recall it. based on everything i've heard recently (mainly dubstep allstars 4 and the garage pressure shows) the whole thing is moving away from the aspects i liked...

I reckon it has some of the cheesiest album Art I've seen since some early-90s Fantazia rave tape multipack, but still fairly excited. To be honest tho I suspect Pinch and Distance's respective albums on Planet Mu will blow this out of the water...

I think someone posted that on here already. He plays that song in his mixes quite often, it's decent. If it's the nadir of the album's tracks then I'm far from worried. A great deal of the tracks are going to be reworkings of tracks he's caned on his rinse shows anyway, so if you've enjoyed them you'll like the album.

I'm pretty sure Martin Clark wrote that line about the Skream album - it's from his This Month In Grime/Dubstep I think - and he has a lot of fairly strong positions on these types of issues (not a diss, just context).

The Kode9 album is v. good, except for the old dubby tracks which I find increasingly boring.

Sine of the dub etc I would presume. They are ideal opening tracks to a Dj set, but en masse they could easily bog down an album fo sho.

I think this is probably why I take issue with the statement so much. I just can't seem to get on with Blackdown. He knows what he's talking about but I don't like the style of his writing or his productions and tend to disagree with a lot of his opinions.

Well if the Skream track is anything like that Horsepower Productions rainforest track then Martin's distaste will be justified.

On the other hand a lot of great music could also fit that description.

I wonder if Martin likes any opulent laidback stuff? I'm trying to imagine if he would like the Jazzanova remix of MJ Cole's "Sincere", for instance.

Yeah I had this feeling you might. Maybe because at their best Jazzanova are quite explicitly otherworldly?

I'm interested to work out what you/we mean when you/we say "coffee table" - there's an implied er homeliness to the criticism perhaps.

Surely you understand "coffee table" Tim? it's the act of sonic dilution/softening that producers apply to previously rough urban club music to make it pallatable in coffee bars, polite living rooms, corporate elevators, adverts etc. The Photek --> Everything But the Girl (circa d&b phaze) transition.

It also signals the implied "musican" mindstate that producers often fall into when they make an album. "I know, if I make a 'jazzy' track, people will respect me as a 'proper musician.'"

Anyway it would be sad and wrong to focus soley on this track on the Skream LP, let alone at the expense of Kode 9's great LP too. The Skream LP has some killers on it, most of all the rarely effective grime/dubstep interaction the JME vocal of "Tapped."

maybe it's that the paranoid & alienated vibe Tricky was riffing on seemed out of step or far-fetched/weed-induced back in 1995, but now the world has caught up with his postmodern dread by going to absolute shit politically speaking, it seems totally fitting and nessecary? I like this album though, it is very trip-hop to my ears but not in a retro/lazy way.

Its relevant as a comparison but it reminds me how fucking excellently engineered "Maxinquaye" is, how fat and lush and well constructed it is, in comparison with something like this (good as it is it sounds cheapo and rickety)

xpost - well, in the middle of "cool Brittania" (retch) even in the middle of Trip-Hop as a product of post-rave comedown melancholy, Tricky felt like he was pulling away from sanity a little further/harder than the rest of us...

I dunno about cheapo and rickety, I thought "Maxinquaye" was going for that slowly disintegrating sound junkyard feeling, it came out a bit more pop than I think he was happy with in retrospect (going by interviews anyway) but I think it was a stab at organised chaos much more than what gekoppel describes. This Kode 9 record feels much more zesty and spare. Maybe it's the fruityloops treble?

when i was listening to this last night i was thinking "tricky, tricky, tricky" as well! it may well be redundant but it's less to do with the music than the spaceape's vocals, which are like a less psychotic tricky circa pre-millennium tension or nearly god (i don't think maxinquaye is the best comparator).

The CD version of the Kode9 album sounds well-produced I think, but Maxinquaye is such a succulent album that it's probably a bit of a high standard to use.

Gek i dont know if you read the Wire interview with Kode but interestingly he mentions how much he liked Wiley and Jammer's Sinogrime experiements exactly because they sounded cheapo and perhaps rickety...

Yes I did read that Wire piece... he also said that he prefers the synthetics of grime to the more sample based sonics of Dubstep, so I can see what he was going for with his album (though actually Dubstep is just as synthetic as Grime as far as I can make out in terms of the origins of its sounds). Maxinquaye is definitely attempting a decaying junkyard atmosphere (see Ian Penman's proto-hauntological tract from the time of that album's release in The Wire). It remains a pleasingly fat listen, in engineering terms.

blackdown obviously knows all his shit but i find his writing trapped between wanting to say what he really thinks and knowing he has to work with all these people cos hes 'part of the scene' so it ends up feeling a bit compromised.

only heard this kode 9 album a few times but i find the production a bit 'small' and budget. im all for being low fi and not glossy but that doesnt mean it has to be cheapo.

another case of a terrible rip this. I've not heard the CD but the 10"s sound a hell of a lot better than the 192 album mp3s. if you're not listening to those, claims it's badly produced are mystifying to me.

Is there such a thing as an instrumental version of this? The music's generally excellent, but the Spaceape (if that is his real name) gets seriously grating after a track or two. He's good in the odd guest spot, but really not for a whole LP.
