Eh, he often tries too hard to crossover into pop. I'll stick with Little Bryan & the Zydeco Travelers and other young hiphop-inflected zydeco acts, plus trad ones like Geno Delafose.

About 15 years ago I saw Buckwheat Zydeco live. He played the HELL out of his accordian, including screeching feedback and harsh-edged solos during his 10 minute cover of "Hey Joe." His most recent record, where he goes back to playing Hammond B-3 for some extended cuts, is really great. And his children's album, Choo-Choo Boogaloo, is really quite awesome.

I think Steve is being unfair hating on a man who just wants to (bring music to the people) / (get real paid outside the zydeco-fan ghetto).

I have his first album (that's what the notes say) "100% Fortefied Zydeco" and I agree with the sticker on it. It's a great party album. I don't know if I can agree with the rest of the sticker, though, because in order to know if it's "His best!" I would have had to have heard some of the other albums.

matt:

the hiphop-inflected zydeco dudes I like want to get paid also. But you reminded me of something I forgot:

"his children's album, Choo-Choo Boogaloo, is really quite awesome."

Yep, me and my boy used to listen to that.

IPSISSIMUS (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural, Jr., leader of Buckwheat Zydeco, is being treated for early stage cancer on his left lung and a vocal chord. Dural will begin treatment immediately and doctors expect a full recovery. Buckwheat Zydeco will postpone current concert dates, but expects to return to touring this summer

In a very late-80s moment, I saw Buckwheat Zydeco at the Lone Star Cafe in NYC, and met Ken Ober (then host of Remote Control) at the show.

one year passes...

Buckwheat, aka Stanley Dural, Jr., is playing a pre-Mardi Gras gig at The Iridium for two nights. Then, on the following night he's sitting in with the Les Paul Trio on the Hammond B-3.

I've never seen him do a Hammond B-3 organ gig.
