Robert Schumann Piano Quintet Op 44, mov 2

If you've seen Bergman's Fanny & Alexander, you know this, because it plays during the opening scene; gorgeous string qt + piano performing lyric, teary-eyed romantic music, actually reminded me of Radiohead the other day. Anyway, I'm looking for a performance of this that's in the spirit of the one I heard in the movie (which didn't list performers) -- slower than most I have heard so far. Can anyone help?

The Eroica quartet has a beautiful recording of this piece.

Oh wait, no, I'm thinking of the QUARTET Op 41

I've been playing this alot lately, you're right, it is totally awesome, esp for the lucky violist.

I also TOTALLY agree that slower is better for the second movement....
On the more indulgent side, the only one I can think of offhand is Rubenstein with the Guarneri quartet, it is GORGEOUS, and you can get it right on iTunes for instant gratification. Just don't get the Paganini quartet one with him by mistake, it's older I think, and so you'd think slower, but it is actually just not as good....also I think there's a Budapest quartet one around, I bet that's also great and probably in the mood you're looking for....

This is indeed lovely. Mmmm. Though I only have the version with Menahem Pressler (piano) & the Emerson String Quartet.

That Emerson recording is a good one; I just saw them recently and they were amazing, although of course the members have changed quite a bit since they put out that cd.

Do the film's end credits identify the performers?

one month passes...
Got round to "Fanny and Alexander" (2-DVD set) over the weekend, no list of the performers at the end credits.

anyway, Dominique - did you look and find what you wanted? I quite like a version of this..

Rubenstein with the Guarneri quartet

thanks for the rec, I finally did find this and it's great. julio, you'll probably need to look for it used, but is of similar feel to the performance in the movie
