"Nirvana" vs "Soul Asylum"

dave q (listerine), Thursday, 14 September 2006 08:36 (nineteen years ago)

gang of four's 'hard' doesn't have 'edie', 'sweet soul sister', 'sun king', or 'soul asylum' on it.

sonic temple wins by a mudslide.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 14 September 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Gang of Four isn't The Cult.

Gang of Four wins by a landside, comrades.

Eazy-Esteban Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Thursday, 14 September 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

haha. one day the cult will have retro value. one day i'll be able to crank 'aphrodisiac jacket' without wondering what the neighbours think.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 14 September 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

This is twisted. I'm new here. Did I miss something?

Randall Weeber (yoyoweb), Friday, 15 September 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

WAHT

Sonic Temple, definitely. (I've never heard it.)

xero (xero), Friday, 15 September 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ceremony: The band was sued for US$61,000,000 by the parents of the American Indian boy, named Eternity Dubray, pictured on the album cover.

Maybe one day The Cult will be discovered by a dumb teenager or two. BUT THAT'S ALL.

Eazy-Esteban Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 15 September 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

That happened a couple years ago.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 15 September 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

I like both bands a lot. But I prefer "Sonic Temple" to "Hard".
I'd choose "Entertainment" over "Love" which is my fave Cult album.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 15 September 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

i like 'love' too, but prefer 'electric' which i think is better than any ac/dc record

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Friday, 15 September 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Better than any AC/DC record after "For Those About to Rock ..." maybe.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 15 September 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'd choose "Sonic Temple," since I at least own it and don't own "Hard."

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 15 September 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

"which i think is better than any ac/dc record"

oof. ugh. woof. blah. gah. unnnnhh....

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 September 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

it's a controversial statement to be sure, and in fairness ac/dc are by far the more consistent and important band (i've been listening to them most of my life and have seen them three times live), but 'electric' has some sort of strange nostalgic kick for me - reminds me of elements of forgotten youth and lost love.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Friday, 15 September 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i hear you. i'm still putting you thru my love removal machine though.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 September 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

haha. what a fistpumper that track is. cranked it out on a video jukebox the other week at the pub actually. sang it out loud and downed another g and t.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

"Electric" reminds me of forgotten youth. I forget why I liked it so much when I was young, har har!

Just kidding. I love that record, and concede it is better than the (Rick Rubin produced) "Ballbreaker," if only for that stoooopid cover of "Born to Be Wild." The rest is like AC/DC is AC/DC sounded as much like the Stones as Christgau seemed to think they sounded.

I think I listen to "Love" more than "Entertainment!" I rarely listen to "Sonic Temple," but like most of it. That Cult sure did know how to arrange a song.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

i'd embrace 'love' more if it weren't for the ponderous slow tracks - 'brother wolf sister moon' and the last one.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

(That errant "is" should be an "if.")

I love the ponderous slow tracks. "Rain" wouldn't be half as good without "BW,SM" and its thunder coda as an intro.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

when i was but a tender teen i was in my room one day listening to love and my brother came in and asked me why i didn't just listen to led zeppelin instead. killjoy!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

haha. why listen to led zep exclusively, when you've got the cult as an alternative when a certain mood sets in?!

love 'nirvana', love 'big neon glitter', love 'rain', obviously love 'she sells sanctuary', even like 'phoenix' and 'hollow man' considerably. so many key tracks make a very solid record. it's just too much of an uncomfortable middleground between the melodic, goth-tinged 'dreamtime', and the balls-to-the-wall, glitter drenched hard rock thrust of 'electric'.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man, Hard is terrible.

Sonic Temple is half terrible. So Sonic Temple wins.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

hmmm

'let there be rock' is probably better than 'electric'. i've had a bit of an ac/dc epiphany of recent. well, not so much an epiphany, but more of a balanced understanding of what makes them great. 'electric' is still a cracker though.

which brings me to 'sonic temple'. yes boys, i've put this one under the microscope again, and it's half garbage. 'soul asylum', 'edie' and 'sun king' are all super good. but a lot of this record sounds like they were reheasing for their stadium rock shows in the studio. they've left room for the synchronised handclaps, and the muffled crowd singalongs. astbury is all pomp and canned energy.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 13 March 2008 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

'let there be rock' is probably better than 'electric'.

I love Electric, but this statement is akin to saying that molten lava is probably hotter than burning coal.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 13 March 2008 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

haha yeah does anyone think the cult is better than ac/dc? i bet the cult doesn't even think that.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 13 March 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah but knowing Ian Astbury he'd say something about how he brought the powers of the shaman to the style.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 March 2008 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

haha i love astbury's pseudo-spiritualism. similar to a kid's enthusiasm towards a stamp collection

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 13 March 2008 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

medicine train is wretched
