Sonic Temple, definitely. (I've never heard it.)

Just kidding. I love that record, and concede it is better than the (Rick Rubin produced) "Ballbreaker," if only for that stoooopid cover of "Born to Be Wild." The rest is like AC/DC is AC/DC sounded as much like the Stones as Christgau seemed to think they sounded.
I think I listen to "Love" more than "Entertainment!" I rarely listen to "Sonic Temple," but like most of it. That Cult sure did know how to arrange a song.

I love the ponderous slow tracks. "Rain" wouldn't be half as good without "BW,SM" and its thunder coda as an intro.

love 'nirvana', love 'big neon glitter', love 'rain', obviously love 'she sells sanctuary', even like 'phoenix' and 'hollow man' considerably. so many key tracks make a very solid record. it's just too much of an uncomfortable middleground between the melodic, goth-tinged 'dreamtime', and the balls-to-the-wall, glitter drenched hard rock thrust of 'electric'.

Sonic Temple is half terrible. So Sonic Temple wins.
― Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)
hmmm
'let there be rock' is probably better than 'electric'. i've had a bit of an ac/dc epiphany of recent. well, not so much an epiphany, but more of a balanced understanding of what makes them great. 'electric' is still a cracker though.
which brings me to 'sonic temple'. yes boys, i've put this one under the microscope again, and it's half garbage. 'soul asylum', 'edie' and 'sun king' are all super good. but a lot of this record sounds like they were reheasing for their stadium rock shows in the studio. they've left room for the synchronised handclaps, and the muffled crowd singalongs. astbury is all pomp and canned energy.

I love Electric, but this statement is akin to saying that molten lava is probably hotter than burning coal.

haha yeah does anyone think the cult is better than ac/dc? i bet the cult doesn't even think that.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 13 March 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah but knowing Ian Astbury he'd say something about how he brought the powers of the shaman to the style.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 March 2008 15:30 (eighteen years ago)
haha i love astbury's pseudo-spiritualism. similar to a kid's enthusiasm towards a stamp collection
