Kinda disappointing, but how could it not be? Sucks that he's still into that "Encore"/Elvis in Vegas sound that semi-ruined the Black Album, but this isn't quite as bad as "Bonnie & Clyde" or "Change Clothes". (So yeah, all this really proves is that Jay has gotten shit at picking first singles.) That Flav sample seems really tacked on and the drums are way too busy.

Apocalypse '07: Rodney Strikes Back (R. J. Greene), Saturday, 7 October 2006 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

"and the drums are way too busy."

That's the beauty of it!

MRZBW (MRZBW), Saturday, 7 October 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

I like the beat. It usually takes me a few listens for Jay lyrics to really sink in.

Is that the Rumpshaker saxophone?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Saturday, 7 October 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

it is the rumpshaker sax.

beat is soft soul cheese. crappy drum fills from 'the blazettes'. lazy endless loop of a beat.

sounds like a blueprint/black album outtake or something that didnt make the cut last time.

not really much of a fanfare for the new album.

hope nas' first single is better.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 7 October 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

I heard Nas' album is will.i.am'd out like a motherfucker, so uh don't hold your breath.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Saturday, 7 October 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

I mean this new song is no "Hovi Baby" but I love JB's spastic jazz fusion drums.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Saturday, 7 October 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I finally heard one of the new songs on 92Q last night but the DJs didn't say what it was called - the chorus was "30s are the new 20s" or something like that.

i heard them play 'lost ones' and thought it was weaker than a bottle of coors cutter

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 16 November 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

jay seems to be claiming the existence of tracks not on the cd, incl. a collabo w/ nas and cam diss track

max (maxreax), Thursday, 16 November 2006 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

does anyone else think the first 5 or so lines are a subliminal at 50? not to be like a total nerd. he just sounds like he's intentionally biting 50's flow/voice sound.

max (maxreax), Thursday, 16 November 2006 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

got it. not v. good. he's got some pretty nice rhymes in there along with a lot of filler and unconvincing, forced laughs. but he doesn't make you want to listen to him anymore, which i think encapsulates it all.

beats will be remembered as late era dre, neptunes and kanye before they all vaporised into oblivion.

Janus Køster-Rasmussen (Vesterbrunch), Thursday, 16 November 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

unconvincing, forced laughs

like at the start of show me what ya got? i.e. "He, he, I'm back, he, he."

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 16 November 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

haha, at least he says he's sorry at the beginning of that song. actually, though, "Show Me What You Got" has slowly grown on me, when it comes on the radio I leave it on.

beats will be remembered as late era dre, neptunes and kanye before they all vaporised into oblivion.

I wish that was true, but I think they'll all be charging six figures for a beat until they're 80. it's definitely symptomatic of one of Jay's problems the last few years, though. aside from a handful of no-names, every producer he's worked with on this and the Black Album have been established people he's worked with forever, when he used to discover producers or get with whoever's new and hot at the moment. not that I necessarily want to hear Jay do songs with Cool & Dre or whatever, but it seems like he's unwilling to go out of his comfort zone and will just take whatever Pharrell or Just Blaze comes up with.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 16 November 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

yeah its a nice track, but that beginning is awkward

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 16 November 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

also, the homoeroticism on Do U Wanna Ride:

»I know some places we can go (Yeah nigga)/Do you wanna ride with me?«

Janus Køster-Rasmussen (Vesterbrunch), Thursday, 16 November 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really starting to lose my appreciation of this guy. He's becoming, like, the rap Donald Trump or something.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 16 November 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

His hyper-capitalist schtick was sort of likeable when he was still the scrappy underdog fighting his way to the top, but now he just comes off as a boor.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 16 November 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

I kinda like the video to "show me what you got" in an out of control 70's soap opera bling way. makes the track more fun.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

i like it a little better now, after a few listens. esp. "oh my god" and "do u wanna ride". that chris martin song still doesn't make sense, though. the album is on par with, or slightly better than, the black album. that isn't much of a praise, i know, but then, it isn't meant to be.

Janus Køster-Rasmussen (Vesterbrunch), Thursday, 16 November 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

The front sleeve looks alright until you pull it from the tray. Then it turns comical.

I really like the black album (I seem to be the only one on earth, though). I might consider getting this one then...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 17 November 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

dr dres beats on this are pretty poor - they sound low budget and cheap (but then so do a million other beats these days) and weirdly, two of them sound like j dilla!

Lost One and Trouble, right? I initially thought the piano runs were Anthony Hamilton rip-offs. Then I scanned the credits: Mark Batson, Hamilton's producer, co-produced them.

Pamplaxico Polancobon (Andy_K), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Alex, I also really like the Black album and I think that save "30 Something" this is garbage, no better than the subpar leaked stuff.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Friday, 17 November 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I really like "Trouble." All in all the album's ok, or at least nowhere near depressing as the fact that Jay has gotten himself dragged into a beef with JIM JONES.
