Okay, no more Mr Nice Guy! How the bloodclaat do I stop Winamp loading up and summoning the dreaded Gracenote database every time I stick a CD into my drive?

Cos it takes about 10 years for Gracenote to do anything and it makes Windows Media Player confused. And you click Abort and it just doesn't abort.

you like everything i don't like though. gracenote takes weeks to do a search, rarely finds the album you've just put into the player and just cocks everything uip. You click on "Abort" and then that button turns into "Aborting" so you click it again and nothing happens, for like 5 minutes.

it's quicker than typing in track names, etc.

I have no idea how I did it, but my WinAmp says CDDB isn't installed. So it is possible.

(oh! how does one reinstall CDDB? reinstalling winamp doesn't help)

:-)

Hold on, I found it.

When you installed Winamp3 did you UNCHECK "Support for CD audio with CDDB"

I need to check that option after I uninstall WinAmp, you'll want to uncheck it.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 15 September 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

the problem with gracenote is that half the time the track names have been entered by an illiterate monkey on crack, so you have to go through and change them all anyway.

and i speak as the man who single-handedly uploaded the tracklisting for the fall peel sessions box-set. which i seem to remember had a mistake in it somewhere. sorry.

For CDDB to work, the following files MUST be present in the Winamp\Plugins dir:

CDDBControlWinamp.dll
CDDBUIWinamp.dll
in_cdda.dll
in_cdda.cdb

ergo, for cddb to not work, remove these files.

place in a safe storage folder to re-use later if you must, this shouldn't do too much damage though, I've hacked my winamp install down to nearly nothing now so I can port it around. The program has very few dependencies that should cause bother... I wouldn't normally recommend messing with .dll files

freedb is quite a bit better than cddb(gracenote) I find as far as user error goes. There might be a WA plugin for using that instead? I only use it (freedb) when ripping CDs with EAC.

Go to Options - Preferences - Plug-ins - Input - Nullsoft CD Plug-in (CDDB2...)

and click Configure, then just clear the tickbox Use CDDB.

Get rid of Winamp and get Foobar. Best audio player for Windows hands down. And it's free.

How the bloodclaat do I shot Winamp?

Foobar2K is like driving an auto with the controls and instruments from the cockpit of an airplane, but with no throttle installed: "Oh, you mean you didn't bring your own throttle? What kind of a automobile fan ARE you?"

How do I stop Winamp loading up every time I put a CD in? I ask the question because I'm trying to rip my CD collection using Windows Media Player (I know, but the work computers don't seem to run ay other ripping software). When I put a CD in, it automatically enqueues in Winamp and tries to find it on Gracenote. At the same time it tries to play the CD in WMP and it makes the whole computer go silly. I tried disabling things in Winamp options but there is no option to actually save your preferences so every time I go back into options, the default ones are back again! AAARGH!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yeh, Options > General Preferences > File Types > I untick "Launch Winamp for Audio CDs" > Come out >Come back in again > It's TICKED again!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

How long has this "Play tracks similar to..." gracenote-powered thinger been in Winamp? And does it work in interesting ways, besides tempo/genre matching? Somebody tell Scik Mouthy.

Kerm, Friday, 11 January 2008 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

Never had a problem with Gracenote myself. Genre can be a bit weird, but I don't really give a shit.

chap, Friday, 11 January 2008 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, giving it Noah and the Whale and getting Shirley Bassey and Christmas music is a little goofy, but I see what it's seeing.
