Can you name a band from the 70's or 80's that have not reunited once since their breakup. (I mean reunited in their original or most popular lineup). Has there been a thread on this topic before?

I can think of 2 bands at the moment

Talking Heads
The Vapors

Any other bands you all can think of?

sigmundooze (sigmundooze), Friday, 15 September 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

There are probably 24514515432 bands that haven't reunited.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 September 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Why does my IQ changes? (noodle vague), Friday, 15 September 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

Magazine, and good on them, although I wouldn't cry foul in the unlikely event that they did reform.

LC (Damian), Friday, 15 September 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Wikipedia says Talking Heads played together when they were admitted to the Hall of Fame.

white heat (white heat), Friday, 15 September 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

ABBA were apparently offered a billion dollars to reunite for a tour, and declined.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 15 September 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think that's true Ned.

To make my question more clear, I mean in which all original members are still alive today and have the possiblity to reform but havent.

As far as Talking heads get together at hall of fame im not sure if that really counts, thats not something for the public in general right?

sigmundooze (sigmundooze), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah ABBA is a good one. I heard about that Doug.

Stan (sigmundooze), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

To make my question more clear, I mean in which all original members are still alive today and have the possiblity to reform but havent.

Are you disallowing situations where there is still a fragment of the band touring?

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

e.g. the Moody Blues who haven't played with Mike Pinder since the 70s.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

Or Supertramp post-Roger Hodgson.

Lynyrd Skynyrd are touring again, of course.

Wham!
Eurythmics
Fun Boy 3
Big Audio Dynamite
Housemartins
The Jam
Felt
KLF
Godfathers
Stawberry Switchblade
The Police
Dire Straits
The Cars

everything (everything), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Supertramp is a good one, except if you saw their last tour, the drummer's Son was just as good as Roger.

Stan (sigmundooze), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Minor Threat and Eurythmics got back together at one point or another not so long ago.

The Smiths.

The Police reunited to record a new version of "Don't Stand So Close To Me" for a "Best Of" album in 1986.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

Police is a good one... Cars can't get back together Ben Orr is dead

Stan (sigmundooze), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

"Black Flag" also played some shows a couple of years back...

Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

the clash never reunited, did they? (they carried on without jones for a bit, but that wasn't a breakup/reunion, and once that lineup broke up, that was that, right?)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

Wings.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

The Police reunited to record a new version of "Don't Stand So Close To Me" for a "Best Of" album in 1986

they also played together on that year's amnesty int'l tour, but they had never formally broken up, so they may still count. however, they did play at sting's wedding in the early '90s, and they also did the rock and roll hall of fame induction reunion thing.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

The Wombles

The Police I think have yet to formally break up. Same about ABBA.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

Wings missing 1 key member.

Why does my IQ changes? (noodle vague), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

The Wombles are still touring I believe. They just send the costumes up on the train with a stage manager and hire some local students to jump around on stage to a backing tape.

everything (everything), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Wham! reunited for one gig at "Rock In Rio" sometime in the early 90s. The gig was named "The Andrew Ridgley Charity Concert" by lots of people.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Wings can't get back together Linda is dead.

sigmundooze (sigmundooze), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

Talking heads are a strange choice because they were still playing in the 90s, and they continued as a band after Byrne Left. I'll let this go, but your question is vague. I mean do Roxy Music count post Eno?

Anyway to contribute, The Runaways.

white heat (white heat), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

I mean do Roxy Music count post Eno?

Irrelevant, as they are now reuniting with Eno.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

No I'm just saying a group in which all members are currently living and haven't reformed since like mid 90's to present.

So with that Talking Heads do count because they have not been a band since 92.

sigmundooze (sigmundooze), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

The Police I think have yet to formally break up.

how does one formally break up? do you have to issue a press release?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

A band member just takes a hammer to the group's framed portrait. They've yet to do it i guess. Sounds like fun to me.

Right, but they never did get back together in the, what, seventeen-odd years after they broke up? Not even some fakey reunion tour Wings with some hotshot hired gun standing in for Denny Laine. Obviously this is because Paul McCartney can sell plenty of tickets on his own name, but I still think they count.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Magazine could reunite with Robin Simon on guitar, perhaps.

Anyway, Any of the "proper" Ultravox lineups Cross/Currie/Cann w/either Foxx/shears, Foxx/Simon or Ure.

Bass-man (bassguy), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

Eurythmics absolutely reunited.

I heard buzz about the Family Stone reuniting but don't know if anything came of it.

How about the Little River Band?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

Wings can't get back together Linda is dead.

Jimmy McCulloch is dead too.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

The Davies/Davies/Avory/Quaife line-up of The Kinks hasn't reunited since 1969 despite recent threats to do so.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

No I'm just saying a group in which all members are currently living and haven't reformed since like mid 90's to present.

See, my scorn at the beginning is because of all the thousands of obscure/never famous/released maybe one single or something or never released ANYTHING bands out there who broke up and that was that. Which is hyperbolic but the original question is hyperbolic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Jimmy McCulloch was only one of their many guitarists though. That could have been worked around.

Can we get They Might Be Giants, who have never broken up, to reunite as the original two-man-band lineup?

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

Right. Strummer always wanted to do the R'n'R Hall Of Fame, but no-one else was especially keen, Topper wouldn't be allowed into the US, and death rendered it moot anyway.

Irrelevant, as they are now reuniting with Eno.

Not really.

To prove Ned's point (and then I'll leave):

Language (the synthfunk group)
(The) Scars *
New Musik
Fingerprintz **
Industry (the one from Long Island) ***

*: Though a partially reformed version of the band reunited briefly for a few dates during Lemon Jelly's UK tour, to perform the sampled "Horrorshow" bits on "The Shouty Track", lead singer Robert King wasn't among them.

**: A couple of the bandmates have gone onto comparatively bigger fame as The Silencers.

***: Jon Carin's too busy with Pink Floyd to do anything with a band that's really only known for that one anti-war song, you know, the one with the video that took place on that aircraft carrier.

No, K2 was their project to build a giant pyramid containing one brick for every person born during the 20th century, and heavy equipment hire company.

It also fictionally didn't demolish Stonehenge on 31/12/1999.

I don't think so, but they made a full re-recording of "The Carpet Crawlers". For me that counts as a reunion.

Hi, yeah, back again. Rain Tree Crow = Japan - Rob Dean. Though Dean didn't take part in the Tin Drum album either (by that time they'd gotten in Masami Tsuchiya as his replacement), Dean definitely was a band member for all the other Japan albums.

Heaven 17

Color me confused, but didn't they release new/remixed material last year? Like, all three of them -- Glenn Gregory, Martyn Ware, and Ian Craig Marsh?

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Saturday, 16 September 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

I find it a lot less likely that the original Human League lineup will ever reunite though.

YMG were scheduled to play at the "25 Years Of Rough Trade" fest in London a few years back (I know, I bought a ticket stating as much), but cancelled at the last minute as Alison had a cold, or somesuch. They got together for a BBC Radio Wales broadcast a couple of years ago and even recorded a new song which sounded nothing like Colossal Youth or anything, but heartwarming to hear the three of them playing again. I don't know whether one-time radio appearances count.

They've planned and cancelled reunion gigs three or four times now. One of them has to work out someday.
