Jim White will steal the show.

I've been on an Will Oldham kick lately, and I have to say his voice is starting to grate on me. Great songwriter n' all, but you can't help but wish he'd work with a singer.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

Oldham's voice, at least Bonnie era Oldham, is absolutely gorgeous IMO. Some of the Palace stuff is admittedly rough, but that was part of the charm anyway.

I'm really excited about this Conan appearance. Andrew WK is kind of a bizarre addition, but it only makes it that much more interesting.

i love oldham's voice. his stuff on i see a darkness is goddamn haunting and I Gave You is amazing, especially the Harmony Korine video.

Pop Ryan (Rebelwordsmith), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

oh yes and Same Love...gorgeous...in my very humble and probably sacriliges opinon it is better than the bill withers version.

"no it isn't. he and sweeney are buds.

-- hstencil (hstenc!...), September 18th, 2006."

That doesn't make it any less weird.

OTM

no matter hoe good the songs will be,he can't break his own limits

emekars (emekars), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

i really like will's new lp and i like his singing

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

i think bpb's vocals are much better than palace era will's vox (kinda could only go up from there)

timmy tannin (pompous), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

i really liked his vox on the 'greatest palace music' album

gear (gear), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

all the vox on Viva are killer

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

I see a darkness has the best vox on it IMO...that album is flawless. The BPB stuff was the first oldham stuff i got into so i like that the best...but i also love the vocals on the Superwolf thing too...haven't heard much of letting off yet.

Pop Ryan (Rebelwordsmith), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

and to tell you the truth, in '99 i would have never in my wildest dreams thought that BPB would be on Conan.

Pop Ryan (Rebelwordsmith), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

his voice sounds amazing lately. and he's fun to watch. stoked!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

stop saying "vox" you fucking homos

katie quirk (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

I think he's gotten MUCH better as a singer.

I just saw him live and was surprised by how loud and powerfully he sang.

"And yet I'm not 100% keen on the less spazzy Crazy Itch Radio either. Despite the sandblasted smoothness of its surface, Crazy Itch Radio is still very much Basement Jaxx showing off how eclectic they can be. Much of it sounds like the two spent the past three years listening to the roller-boogie bounce of mid-80s r&b and Latin freestyle. And there are certainly worse sounds to revive. Lead single "Hush Boy" takes off from interim single "Oh My Gosh" with sassy female lead VOX, bopping b-line, and parping horns. You almost forget it's two middle-aged men trying to be cutesy rather than the puckish sass that comes natural to vulgar teenagers who would think Radcliffe and Buxton were, like, all old and shit."

actually i don't know what "parping horns" means, but i like it

lol jess.

btw waats the deal w yr current name?

geoff (gcannon), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I have to amend that I've been listening to old Palace stuff, his voice has gotten better, but musically he can never match the power of _Lost Blues_ (yeah, I know that it's a collection, but I didn't no that at the time so I'll always think of it as an album, dammit)

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

btw that new indie movie he's in, Old Joy, was great...he's quite an actor too.

haven't seen that but i rember how good he was in Matewan

I noticed that Drag City skipped right to "DC420" for Will's new one (other recent catalog #s are all still in the low 300s.)

TOKE IT!!!!!

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

This was cool.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 07:36 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew WK was not made any kind of deal of whatsoever, he was off to the far left, not lit, no closeups, banging away on piano. Didn't even see his face until after he shook Conan's hand during the credits. Camera mostly stayed on Sweeney and Oldham, who was wearing eye makeup and occasionally doing little jig-like leg movements. I'd never seen him perform before though, maybe he always does that.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 07:44 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, what was up with the spastic jigging? it's not like Oldham's sound guy played the wrong backing tape. and that Andrew WK cleans up nice. Conan seemed to be telling him as much during the extended handshakefest happening under the credits.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

he's a strange guy

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

I saw him recently, doing solo acoustic, sitting on a stool...but yeah he had sort of strange movements. like he's stick his leg out and sort of swoop his head up and down oddly.

it was at a record store so he was sort of hanging around after the show, signing posters and CDs, etc.

I waited in line to meet him. Right in front of me in line was Todd Trainer of Shellac. They had a really intense, hushed conversation. Then I was next.

I went up to him and said something dorky like, "Oh hey I really like your music and I hope you come back to Minneapolis more often" (He'd not played here in 10 years)

He looked at me and said, "Yeah, you know, cuz we have to get this whole Pangea thing going. The Hudson is going to shrink and New York will move into the Midwest!"

Me: "Um...[pause]...So it'll be easier to tour?"

Bonnie: "EXACTLY!"

Then...he shakes my hand for an uncomfortably long period of time, like 30 seconds. He was smiling and looking right into my eyes and crushing my hand in a very strong handshake.

Then he let go and signed my poster:

"Pangea--------> Forward for Unity! Thanks, XbonnyX"

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

He talked about his reuben sandwich with my friend for a long time, and then signed his record "Halfway to a Threeway, Will"

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Jeffrey Lewis to thread.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

His voice on the show sounded "a little hoarse"
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000019S6.01._SCTHUMBZZZ_.jpg

I wonder if he and Johnny Knoxville hung backstage.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

The little awkard jigs are standard Oldham procedure (that stuff on Conan was actually kind of reserved compared to the goofy stuff I've seen him do), the eye makeup however... is new as far as I know.

These comments crack me up, it seems the guy has a really bizarre (and oddly quick-witted) sense of off the cuff humor about him. He's definitely an original.

just picked up the new album at lunch....first run of cds comes with a bonus disc of rarities and tracks from comps. haven't listened to it yet, but was playing the store, sounded good - more sonically adventurous vers. of master and everyone. lots of female backing/harmony by (maybe) pink nasty.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

great performance.

1.
Andrew WK is a good piano player
2.
the arrangements of the song sounds like Nick Cave & Bad Seeds.

I might actually buy that to get the second disc. I only own the first 3 Palaces on LPs and mp3s of I See A Darkness, but this is supposed to be his best thing since that, so might as well.

Watched the clip again, I like how he rubbed under his nose right before he shook Conan's hand. Forgot that.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

>but this is supposed to be his best thing since that,

That's before I See A Darkness innit.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

yes, it came out before. I kind of lost track after 'I see a darkness' (which was fantastic).. shld I get the new record then?

"ironic crepe, tho, probly"

I've read about the "irony" slant before, I think exclusively on the AMG Joya review. It doesn't hold up in any sense though. If you read about the guy or any interviews pertaining you'll learn that he really is a genuine fella' (albeit in his own obtuse way).

"lost blues, lost blues, lost blues"

When I saw him on the Superwolf tour, Lost Blues (CD) was selling for an exorbitant amount of money ($30 I think). What's the deal with that? Everything else was reasonably priced.
