OK you eggheads, boneheads, boobs, swabs, mugs, lurkers, trolls and [insert tribe here]...

As you can see, we have added a slatch more categories of archive. For the moment I think the way to work out how they work is by poking around in them and reading them. And — if you REALLY don't get it (or if you spot an obvious error or possible improvement) — then post on this thread. Which is archived under Searching ILM, naturally.

Some of the older categories — for example, Everybody's Talking About Pop Music, Lists Lists Lists and Words — are still a bit jumbly and all-inclusive. So if you can't find it elsewhere, try there.

mark s, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Great job, Mark S! I wouldn't have sorted out this board for a million dollars...

Nicole, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I fear the trolls 'cause they're out to steal yer knowledge.

Alex in SF, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two million, yes. But a million just wouldn't be enough.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And yes, praise Mark with great praise.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for your hard work!

Ron, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you are a mentalist mark we love you

Josh, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Definitely worth a carboot full of easter eggs.

Makes me want to search through all the old threads again, which is either a very high compliment or a major criticism (I'll let you know later, I suspect it's the former).

Billy Dods, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to come over all death's-head on you guys but this might be a good place to wonder about what to do once greenspun goes down for good/starts charging us... I guess what I'm saying is that the elephant in the closet = the fact that any move to an even slightly different tech for the board will obviate all of sean and mark's hard work.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, it's worth a try, anyhow. There's an administrative option for dumping core, but someone would have to write an app around that, which may be more trouble than it's worth. If you wait long enough, every effort will be for naught, but it's still worth trying, if only for the challenge.

ps. Added "Musicians Behaving Badly" today as a category, and will try to populate it more thoroughly soon.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

rickyT, the boy of badgers, said that writing an app to translate the download into a READABLE form would NOT be that hard, but but but i don;t know if he meant a continually useable form (which wd presumably mean creating our own version of greenspun)

(ps this thread is meant to be abt questions re the categories not chat abt marvelous mentalist sean and me)

mark s, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(also worth noting that the administrative option that makes the entire ILM database portable requires an awful lot of compiling on the Greenspun server, and as the damn thing chokes even when it's compiling statistics on posting frequency, it's hard to say what effect this massive operation might have, not only on ability to actually retrieve all the ILM info, but on the continuing operation of all the other forums on the server, while the compile is taking place.)

And yes, any complimentary blather or vicious fist-waving should probably take place here.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Readable form = straightforward enough going by what DG posted about the archives. Actually rigging up something useable is theoretically well within the reach of the ILX techies * a couple of weeks, but requires a server w/enough space, bandwidth and freedom to do what we need.

RickyT, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A server w/enough space, bandwidth and freedom to do what we need = greenspun.com but it's inevitable that this will change, and I think probably sooner rather than later. It would be REALLY nice to have something sort of warming on the fire in preparation against the cataclysm. I can't code TCL or anything so I'm not sure what i could do to help - so I feel kind of foolish getting all medieval on your asses - but we need to SEIZE THE TOOLS OF PRODUCTION yarrr! (and then find a server etc.) I will do whatever I can to help.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just realized that my last post exactly reproduces the arc of 20th century socialist revolution; typically leaving the problem of CAPITAL till the very end as an afterthought

Tracer Hand, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer you are the consummate socialist.

Tim, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How much space and bandwith is needed for this site? Any idea what the basic specs are that would need to be met?

Dave, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for your efforts Mark and Sean. Is there a category for albums? Where people discuss on one album. Blind as I am I could not find anything, I found the songs cat though. Examples in recent past: Metal Machine Music, Geogaddi, Confield, Neil Young's latest, Lambchop's latest, Leonard Cohen's latest, Bob Dylan's latest etc.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes alex: Your Desert Island Disc, right down at the bottom

mmm is already filed (it was FIRST TO GO IN i think) but this cat will be slower to fill as you can't do a quick global search for a unifying phrase (also a bunch are filed in CoD already)

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha right beside the songs cat!! (which was deliberate of course): i agree it is not the most instantly utterly transparent cat name

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank Mark but there is only MMM of the albums I mentioned in that cat and anywhere that would not be the cat where I would search for opinions on arbitrary albums. I think we need a new album cat, no? Some of them are in CoD ok, but I find there is a problem with CoD in that case. There are so many threads in there, it is too general a concept. Wouldn't it be better to put CoD threads which fit into another cat into that cat? E.g. the thread on "AMG: CoD" into "music printed publications" or whatever it's called. Same for S&D if it does not concern one band/artist. E.g. the "S&D music guides" belongs into "music printed publications" as well. What do the others think?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

typo: Thanks Mark.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know you don't want to know this, but GOOD JOB mark and Sean!

We'll have to do sometrhing about populating that Math-[music] thread, eh?

Jeff W, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(I mean cat, not *thread* obv)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

alex yes basically i agree with you abt CoDs which are abt eg RECORDS or CONCEPTS or in fact not about bands or musicians HOWEVER it will take time reading and moving them, so for the moment it seemed more urgent to get on with the uncat pile...

the point of the d.d.disc cat is threads about a single named album: i don't quite follow why a rival cat is needed (tho yes clearly as it stands there are very few gathered together so it's still a bit useless)

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for your response Mark. You are right. What I just proposed is some fine tuning for later on. You have already done a huge pile of work with the recategorisation. And we don't really need a second disc cat but as you said the island disc cat is quite empty for the time being.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ok i moved all the lps and songs out of CoD into the lp and song cats (except prolly a few i missed)

mark s, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ps. I remember that the "words" category was contentious so I relocated a bunch of those to either Critics' Corner or to Music and Print, where appropriate. The ones that remain are a bit thornier.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oops are they? i just moved them all out!!

mark s, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, well, no worries then! I did mine the other day. The ones that were left required more brain expenditure, which I didn't have available at the time. Obv. you have rectified, o brainy one. Yay!

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark: One of your proposed categories, if I remember properly, was "Evah! [x]-est [y]" or something like that. I can't see that in the list...did you re-jig that, or just hold off? If you haven't refiled all those threads elsewhere, I'd propose something like "Extremes: best/worst ever!"

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To the Extreme: Best/Worst/[xx]est Ever!!

(i lost my list again, is why i never started in on it)

mark s, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dropped the "To the..." because that would mess up the trade triptych.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay ombray

mark s, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

looks as though on the next major housekeeping, we'll need a "rock jokes" category :-)

Ron, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ARE JOKES "ROCK"?

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they all go in "by definition"

mark s, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
