What is Hip ?

hip is something that was previously uncool, but before it becomes cool again. if the style cycle were a clock, and cool is 6 o'clock, and uncool is 12 o'clock, then hip is like 2:15

I was under the impression it was more 3:43 and 21 seconds.

'Hip' is what the mainstream appropriates and sells back to the kids three years after the fact.

I just read that the term "hip" to mean "cool" or "in the know" originated with opium addicts in the 1800's because of their custom of smoking while reclining on their sides, with their weight on the hip. Could be baloney, but it was in an article I read somewhere.

It's funny how the meaning of Hipster has changed in just a few short years. It used to mean old guys like Herbert Huncke or other beats, and now it means a young person in Williamsburg.
