First as Rattle & Hum, then as farce.

Rock'n'Roll has gotten better over the years. And the songs are about 10 times better in a live setting.

Which is ironic, considering how much I'd like Ryan Adams to die.

Albumwise, he's been outdrugged, outwailed, outhooked and outrocked by a Mormon Duranee.

Both dire albums, straight in every pejorative sense of the word, but at least "When You Were Young" and "Read My Mind" show glimmers of a ridiculousness that Flowers once posessesed and Adams has never had.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 1 October 2006 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

I really like "When You Were Young" although I'm not sure why/how.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 October 2006 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

haha if there's anything Flowers still possesses, it's ridiculousness!

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 2 October 2006 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

seriously, how could you listen to Sam's Town and bemoan a lack of THAT?

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 2 October 2006 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

it's kinda like soul-as-style versus soul-as-feeling:

flowers used to favour ridiculousness-as-affect and now he favours ridiculousness-as-effect

Rock N Roll is great in the same way that Riot City Blues is great (although I much prefer Rock N Roll) - each doesn't take itself too seriously in clearly paying homage to its influences, and it's obvious that the musicians are having a hell of a lot of fun in both cases.

While I haven't heard Sam's Town, it sounds like it takes itself way too seriously.

I really like "When You Were Young" although I'm not sure why/how.

The eponymous phrase subliminally recalls "If There Is Something." This is the only explanation.
