NYC show put-er-together looking for intern(s)

( Hey ILM - hope postin' for an intern opening doesn't chafe anyone's hide - somma you haters out there might quibble, but I've seen Matador and Pitchfork intern opening posts on here, so all's in the clear... )

I'm an independent show organiser in NYC who seeking new intern(s) for help with all aspects of doing what I do.

Tasks include helping to curate, set up, and follow through with shows, finding new bands, listening to and evaluating new band submissions, organizing my email, researching band bios, copy editing, flyer-ing, running sundry errands, and helping with events.

I'm looking for individuals interested in underground music and DIY ideas, but who are also organized, responsible and driven.

Please look over my website before applying:

Don't apply if you're not interested in the kinds of bands I work with, or can't dedicate at least 20 daytime hours, plus at least a couple of nights, per week. Unfortunately, I also can't take you on as an intern if you're working another serious job or another internship. Looking for at least a three month commitment.

I give preference to applicants who are enrolled in undergrad in NYC, and who are eligible to get some form of course credit for this internship. Being familiar with my shows and the bands I book frequently is a plus.

This is not a paying internship, but you will gain good experience - plus the usual perks like free entry, free drinks, knowing what's going on, meeting interesting attractive drunk people, etc.

If you're interested, please send me a short email describing your experience and interests, and your understanding of what I do - along with a formal or informal resume - to toddp@toddpnyc.com (with "INTERNSHIP" in the subject line.)

Thanks -

Todd P toddp@toddpnyc.com

so we're working together on a show on May 6th. Awesome.

fyi - a good way to get a good show out of me would be to not diss me
on message boards.

there's this:

"Re: IS THERE ANY PLACE TO BOOK IN NYC WITHOUT USING TODD P? Yeah,
it's really strange, I've been booking a tour for my band, and got
every date booked except New York City. His intern Keith finally
e-mailed me back and was like "yeah dude, we'll get you a gig" but it
took a month to receive a response, at least.

The weird thing is he asked who I wanted to play with. Anyone in NYC
willing to play a show with an outsider band on May 6th?"

that isn't super nice to find online. seriously man, maybe just lay
off the the message boards. Aside from the inherent lame-itude of a
bunch of girlfriendless dudes typing at each other all day, those
boards are also the domain of the sorts of folks who bitch and moan
very well but who actually contribute very little to new ideas or diy
scene building.

the reason it took so long for me to get back to you in the first
place (or to ask Kevin to get back to you) is because you started out
both your emails to me for some reason mentioning that silliness on
the noise pickle board or whatever it was - it's annoying to bring up
some time when I got shit talked by a bunch of losers - when I read
both your emails mentioning that I decided I promptly wasn't
interested for that reason.Changed my mind later, but that's why it
took so long.

You seem like a decent guy, I will hook up your show, but maybe work
on the verbal Internet diarrhea a little.

Todd

Jon, you should intern for Todd.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

I take a ten percent cut from the shows - I used to take nothing, but I decided to try to lose slightly less money doing all this. What I get doesn't even start to cover my expenses in running these things - not even the car services to get speakers where they have to get to and home. Do thje math - an average show draws arounbd 60-80 people, ticket pice is $6 or $7. damn I need to buy a car.

I make what little money I live off of by renting rehearsal spaces to bands.

I saw that personal email some dude reposted. Man was I right - that kid in that band I writing to - his name is Christopher, and his band is Magic Mountain - can't seem to keep his personal interactions private. Really should lay off the constant forwarding and written verbal diarea. But whatever, I stand by my words there, and btw - I gave his band a good show with a good crowd. His got paid pretty well, drew nobody.

Sorry to dis all you message boarders, but what can I say - I sure get my share of snarky put downs from all you guys.

let the hater shit storm begin.

love, Todd

seven months pass...
“Anything is a venue,” said the promoter Todd Patrick, known professionally as Todd P. For six years he has made it his mission to program music in far-flung places, from divey bars in Greenpoint to Lutheran churches to private lofts. Now New York’s alt-location guru, he has recently expanded to work with bands on the verge of stardom (Animal Collective, which he booked in 2005) and even nationally known acts (Oneida, Trans Am) at large clubs like Studio B in Brooklyn, winning the attention of the music industry.

marcg, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

I question the premise of this quote:

Todd P is Todd Patrick, but no one uses anything but Todd P, and everyone who knows anything about punk, psych-punk, avant-noise, art-pop, or any other kind of music that screams, slashes, and distorts and is too much rock to make into the Goings on About Town section of the New Yorker knows Todd P.

Hurting 2, Friday, 11 May 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

Hurting 2, Friday, 11 May 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

I mean not to say that you'd see most Todd P shows listed, but I'm sure at least a few bands that have played Todd P shows have also been in the New Yorker, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Todd P himself in the New Yorker (Talk of the Town or something - has he already been) within the next year or two.
