Out of the top three universally agreed upon best guitarists of all time, help me decide what to listen to: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani or Phish?

Can we help you decide not to listen any of these three supremely cheesy ax-men?

Iago Galdston (Iago), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

in honor of his birthday, why not SRV?

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

I might possibly listen to that guy instead if he plays guitar. Or if someone can give him one and put it on YouTube.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

i never heard them, but what is so bad about them exactly? theyve got to be better than beck and mia, right?

-- (688), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

(they have certain qualities in various songs that are easy to look down upon and feel superior in your qualitative assessments as you revel in the genius of jandek)

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

phish is more than one dude.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but I don't like the guitar dude on his own very much so I thought I'd help you narrow it down.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm actually listening to him! Just finished Ultrazone and now am listening to Mystery Tracks Archives Vol. 3.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

trey anastasio isn't bad himself

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

Dick Butkus? My older brother used to tackle me but first announce what famous football player he would be pretending to be. Dick Butkus was probably the most frequent and most violent option.

(This is not why I hate sports, I don't think.)

worse than "the fridge" perry?

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

"Phish" is a great guitarist? I mean, I know they like to play as a unit and all, but...

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

hello mr.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: what makes you think your brother is spying on you right now and about to knock your ass down?

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

Cuz I'm older now and I'd kill him if he tried.

R_S (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

reread how my question was phrased, though.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

if anything, saying "phish" as a single individual would make me think of the drummer (Jon Fishman, right?)

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

He plays guitar.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

I kinda like this album, at least the track where he turns 'One Night in Bangkok' into a Indo-prog odyssey.

yeah, he plays a little song called faht in Phish.

...that loooong greenish zpermatozoid wriggling on the "flexible" steve vai cover looks kinda convincing.
've not heard the music, tho.

Verification of the "universally agreed" meme required.

I don't even know if I have the cd anymore! I haven't listened to it for years. I'm gonna see if that track is on iTunes tonight though.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

Chaki definitely OTM. Flex-Able is actually really fun record. Especially if you dig guitar madness and extreme guitarshit.

Worst troll this month. Not even in PEW's league.

What is the point of this statement? Is this supposed to be news or something? Some sort of considered opinion?

Since we are dealing in redundancy here, have one of these:

No Yngwie, no credibility.

That is Raistlin Majere.

I thought Yngwie was universally agreed upon bad.

Sometimes I start to miss Phish, then I remember all the "Trey is a Jedi" bumperstickers etc and kind of smack myself a bit.

I did myself a great favor by not hanging out with or even being exposed to the Phish scene... except for in 1988-90 when they were pretty small and I really didn't give two shits about them either way. It was not til they were on hiatus that I realized how big they were and how much I liked their records. Never saw a big tour. Only thing I ever saw was the last Brooklyn show.

yes yes, but I assume that at some point in the future i will dig up "lawn boy" and have a listen.

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I've actually been listening to them a bunch again lately. Some stuff is still just too retarded for me, but some of those big open droney subtly funky jams they do (not that I could remember the names of any - maybe "Sand"?) are totally slaying me again.

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

maybe one day you will come to appreciate the retarded stuff, too. I never thought I would, but I did. I loves me retard music just as much as I love being a retard.

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

the timeliness of this discussion is interesting: not a week ago, after getting in my car and putting it in drive, i found myself mumbling the words "set the gearshift for the high-gear of yer soul.." only to think 'why the hell is that so familiar and where the hell did that come from?'

ah yes, Run like an antelope..

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

I do like some of their more ridiculous stuff, especially whatever that one is about, um, something about an amazing helping friendly book or something like that. And also "Scent of a Mule" is probably my favorite of their songs (that I remember the title to).

I always thought Vai and Satriani were Formula One drivers. Isn't Fish in Genesis?

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Phish had all kinds of great guitar work. The problem is you always have to trim the fat to get to it. I would love to see some of their live shows carefully edited down. Dudes would have earned serious critical points if they were rollin' with Teo Macero.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yngwie is perhaps the worst lyricist of all time but as far as shredding?

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

this all reminds me that i've never actually heard marillion.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

I think that is what trey is trying to do solo... and yet, he isn't as interesting somehow. Maybe it's those terrible lyrics. Or just that 4 heads are better than 1 (even with an entire horn section behind him, it really all just came from mostly his head, right?)

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

Aren't Steve Vai and Joe Satriani twins? If you want their brand of masturbation out of Phish, you need to find some early-mid nineties live shit. After they covered "Remain In Light" for their Halloween '96 show, they kinda traded in lead guitar for groove and texture. Then they were good for a few years.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yngwie makes me want to be buried alive. He has no soul and doesn't want Pantera's donuts. Donuts are related directly to soul.

On the phish thing... God... Uh, whenever horns are involved, bands start to blow. (Get it? HA!)

Andi Headphones (Andi Headphones), Friday, 6 October 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

horns >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> guitars

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 October 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

I think most people who HATE any of these guys are only aware of a fraction of their output. "Vai has no soul" = most ridiculous bullshit I've ever heard. Um, yeah, if you're thinking of DLR band or maybe the Bill N' Ted Soundtrack and stuff like that, but even then, he's got more soul in that type of playing than half the "soulful" artists out there. Unless unbridled enthusiasm comes from not caring, of course...

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Friday, 6 October 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

horns >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> guitars

I really love horns, but listening to a lot of Vai lately, I finally realized what he's been trying to say with his guitar all these years. A guitar can be played well just like any other instrument used in elaborate compositions with precision, enthusiasm and restraint, but the fact that it can blow up on a dime into any number of different voices makes it maybe the best instrument there is. It's the ultimate in versatility. It's got strings for infinite emoting + pedal enhancements when you run out of ways to bend your strings and enough available voices to perform the parts of multiple instruments.
