ALUMINIUM, is an album of avant garde orchestral recordings of music written by Jack White of The White Stripes. It was recorded between August 2005 and February 2006 at Intimate Studios in Wapping (London), using a specially assembled orchestra comprising many of the UK’s finest young classical musicians.

The album will be available exclusively through the Aluminium website as a numbered limited edition of 3,333 CDs, 999 LPs and an unlimited download format with electronic booklet. There will also be an exclusive Aluminium toy available on the site. The album and toy will be available to pre-order from November 6th 2006.

Long time White Stripes collaborator, Rob Jones, created a series of 10 images to accompany the album. These images will be printed up as cards and packaged with both the CD and LP formats. In addition to this, the LP format will include a section of an original Rob Jones silk screen print.

The images are available to view on the Aluminium MySpace site, and as part of a wider Rob Jones exhibition which is currently showing at the Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchester.

On hearing Aluminium, choreographer Wayne McGregor included tracks from the album in a new piece that he is putting together for the Royal Ballet. The piece will be performed at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden this November.

okay, there has to be a thread. that myspace page has been up forever. do people still like jack white?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

hey, wait, this isn't avant garde classical music!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

I always mix Jack White and Jack Black, so at first I thought this thread was about the latter. Which would've been great.

You've got to at least like the White Stripes' devotion to using their major label ties/money to execute some cool projects (a'la that really neat 3" record player, and the proposed packaging for this). I'm curious to hear it.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps if they used their major label ties/money to help record some proper avant-garde classical music by composers who could do with the exposure, instead of vanity projects, I might at least like that.

he sounds like he was inspired by the dude who did the american beauty soundtrack.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, even the Beatles signed up the younger, meaner John Tavener to Apple.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

if i were a rich rock star i would buy george crumb and install him in my foyer.

all avantgarde beetle actions null&void in light of those were the days by mary hopkin

Fool of fools that was Apple's most avant-garde release ever!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

no, that was The Fool! wait, their album wasn't on apple. but they designed apple doorways and apple linen closets.

I heard the NPR interview with the White Stripes where Jack White talks about the number 3, and how perfect it is. He won't quit the black/white/red thing, and now he's doing 'classical music.'

*ahem*

Dear Jack,

You write three chord garage rock songs about children. Please for the love of Christ stop this.

Sincerely,
The World

Imitation Early 60s Film Score = Avant Garde Classical Music apparently.

using a specially assembled orchestra comprising many of the UK’s finest young classical musicians.

Haha, that used to be called a "pick-up orchestra"

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

I do kind of like the opening of that first piece. If he actually arranged that, I'm impressed.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

I kinda hope Meg is off somewhere recording the ultimate breakbeat album just to show up Jack on all this.

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, perhaps if the White Stripes actually still had major label ties.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

What do you mean? (genuinely don't know)

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Well, in America at least V2 is now not owned by Virgin but by an indie. I guess they still have major label ties in the UK, sorry. But the two separate V2s do split the costs on things.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

you guys sure that jackie-boy actually had anything to do with executing this? sounds like one of those 'symphonic tributes to the moody blues" kinda deals to me.
