Downloading the only way to get rare music

Downloading music stops artists getting royalties, but what about getting hold of rare recordings.

Do any of you know good shops in the UK to obtain rare or limited releases as opposed to downloading them for the net?

where are you based, sonicred? and what type of music? vinyl exhange in manchester is not bad. haggle vinyl on essex rd, N1 can be good but only if you are searching for jazz, showtunes, oldskoolhardcore, soul or jungle

In London

haggle vinyl is your place then (you've been to the embassy bar right? its opposite that). i assume you've done the mve/reckless records tour of camden-notting hell-angel?

also, for dance music, there is virtual vinyl in stroud green. it is a mail order place, but slightly pricey. i do not know if there is an actual shop you can go in as well

I'd think using the web for rare music searching would be ideal. I tend to wait for reissues myself, but I imagine there are any number of fab online sites (for real stores all over the world) out there devoted to rarities of all sorts (not to mention the eBays and the likes).

As I'm always saying, try gemm.com. They link together the stock lists of loads of second hand record shops. It's international but you can restrict the search just to UK outlets if you want.

Okay, that site is pretty crazy. If I wanted to blow $70 on DNA's EP A Taste of DNA I could. Nuts.

Crazy... but GOOD. What I like is when you get several stores selling something for like $75 and then there's one that has no idea what it's worth and it's going for like $3.

There are tons of good and reasonably priced sellers on GEMM, just avoid those bizarre ones that list every item imaginable and charge too much, they usually have low ratings. Also, in the original question, rare/ or limited releases are usually used so the artist isn't getting any money whether you buy or download. I don't think St. Etienne gets a cut if you buy a copy of Built on Sand for $300 on ebay, so I don;t see how downloading it would be a problem... Anyway, it isn;t worth $300...

I looked on gemm for my winter sleepers ST desires, and one place says they 'can special order it' I am skeptical as they have very poor ratings in some areas. Also I'm pretty sure it's out of print, so maybe they just have it in their database. In particular it says they only fill about 25% of their orders and takes avg. of 34 days :-(

So I should steer clear of this type of seller right?? I'm afraid my desire is threatening to override my good judgement. Somebody talk me down.

If a seller has one star, don't bother. Marqueemoon.com is the exception - they're just a bit slapdash about updating, but I've been happy both times I've dealt with them. If the item says "special order - not in stock" you will simply never get it.

yeah, stay away from sellers with low fill rates and special order items. just search on GEMM once in a while, google, and ebay and eventually you will find the item you are looking for.

always email the seller first to check if the item is actually in stock, they will usually hold it for you if it is

if people say they don't have it in stock then presumably they are just going to get a copy via another dealer and charge you a higher price than that dealer's, no?

michael, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not really, no.
