A thread for jazz bassist Oscar Pettiford

I feel like he's always the wild card guy where I hear something, think it's really good, find out it's him, and then forget about it before my next record store/download session.

I just picked up Vienna Blues, which is him with a bunch of surprisingly great German jazz guys, including the massively underappreciated guitarist Atilla Zoller. Also has some awesome cello-pickin, which I assume is by Pettiford himself.

I remember I used to like this one album Pettiford was on with Lucky Thompson - I forget which name it was under, but it had "Tricotism" on it, and it was great. Any other suggestions?

There's tons of stuff with Pettiford on it; the early Miles Davis on Blue Note, a Coltrane (The Bethlehem Years) literally over a hundred albums available.

I remember one that had two of the best

wow. truncated post. Two of the best bassists, Paul Chambers and Oscar Pettiford, plus Hank Jones and Sonny Clark stepping in & out on piano with Kenny Dorham on trumpet. It's a Sonny Rollins date--Sonny's Time on some budget label or another.

There were at least two Lucky & Oscars, but one in 1956 was called "Tricotism" so that might be the one you want.

The Deep Passion cd has two of his big band sessions and is very nice.

I really really really like Trevor Dunn (he used to play in Mr. Bungle now does experimental/jazz stuff). For those of you in nyc, which I'm guessing is a lot, he plays at The Stone quite a bit.

I've heard some of the Lucky Thompson stuff, it's great. Richard D4vis played a tune in his history class that stuck with me...I remember not feeling it at first, but I think I learned a lot from how they swung together.
