Australians: please tell me about Dave Thomas of Bored!, etc.

Have always thought that his work on Magic Dirt's "Friends In Danger" was one of the highlights of rock guitar, and then this year his old band Bored! has a CD reissue compiling their EP, mini-album, and some odds and ends.

Uneven, but at its best (like on the completely crushing cover of Final Solution) it's just about everything I hoped it would be: basically a distillation of the Stooges side of Magic Dirt and without Adalita's vocals to boot.

So I see he's been in other bands and that Bored! had other albums, but before I start sending more money across the pond, what else in this family tree is worth checking out?

i know a lot of people are really into his new thing Tiger By The Tail but i haven't heard it. I don't like In Vivo, which he was also associated with. he was also in the Dirty Lovers who released one pretty good 45 before their singer died.

he was from the 'long (geelong)

full disclosure: i think "friends in danger" as a whole is the worst thing magic dirt released

bored! are great - but the powdermonkeys are better (features 2/3rds of bored! i think)

bored! is like any other au-go-go type australian band in that their 7"s and EPs are great but the full length albums leave a lot to be desired.

I liked them well enough before she learned to sing!

...and I can't argue the fact that Friends in Danger really killed them dead in the US, but what a record! Maybe just way too hard to get into (took me years). One of the few times I'm aware of where a monster guitar sound got the production it deserves, no apologies needed. Anyways, thanks ESOJ for the tips...will have to look into Tiger By The Tail.
