I picked up this cheap Acid House compilation (tunes include "Slam"-Phuture Pfantasy Club, "That shits wild"-Dr derelict, "box energy"-DJ Pierre and "I got a big dick"-Maurice Joshua) and I've heard very little of the stuff before. I like the jerkiness of it all yet it sounds so PRECISE too. Whats yr fave tunes of the genre? Any good compilations available? Any acid house memories you want to share? Isn't there some acid house squat party scene too or has that fizzled out?

Permanent love for Sleezy D.'s "I've Lost Control." ("I'm losing it... I'm losing it... I'm losing it... I'VE LOST IT!")

Actually, I got a couple of ancient compils in the mid 90s, one of which was "Deap Heat 2" (!!!) and the other was "Acceeid!!! Explosion!" or something similar- anyway a vinyl compil from just after the moral panic about Acid House broke in the UK, hence the "Acid is about music, not drugs!" type statements all over the cover. Still, it was worth it- for 99p, I got the full 12" versh of Longsy D's "This Is Ska"! To be honest, a lot of it is filled with crap UK attempts at Acid House, but there's a couple of good US ones, and a really good "Acid" remix of Roxanne Shante's "Sharp As A Knife", which apart the ocassional helium-voiced "aceeid!!" sample, hasn't dated at all! The "Deep Heat 2" compil is also neat as it contains some US hip-house, including Tyree's "Hardcore Hip House" and Fast Eddie's "Yo Yo Get Funky", as well as one or two of the UK ska crossovers, like Children of the Night's "We Play Ska". There's even one or two one offs like Rob Base & DJ Easy Rock with their infamous "It Takes Two", (Basically, the record which was responsible for the James Brown "Yeah!..... Woah!.." sample loop appearing in squillions of dance tunes post-1988) and Orange Lemon with the incredibly lo-fi "The Texican", which sounds like it was done with a drum machine and Amiga A500!! There's also a post-"Stakker" Humanoid doing the rather pleasantly rave-friendly "Slam". (About 3 million light years from their arty Future Sound Of London incarnation.)

Acid over by Tyree was the one that started it but "Acid man" by Jolly Roger is good too (although much later)

Adonis - "The poke"
