record stores nyc need a psyche freak?

Hey does anyone know if any smaller record stores, along the lines of Other Music, Kims, or Academy Records needs help? Or which places would be good to work for?

I'm pretty knowledgable about classic rock, 60s/70s psyche, modern bands in the acid/folk/metal/doom/progressive/jazz/random and weird vein.

Thanks a lot (I gotta get out of art school!).

Id say if theres one thing nyc record stores don't need its a guy who knows about acid/folk/metal/doom/progressive/jazz. What they're probably lacking is a resident Billy Joel expert.

I didn't realize New York was such a hotbed of pent-up demand for Billy Joel.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Sunday, 8 October 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

You'd be surprised. Especially since the piano man's recent jam with Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice.

Rocket Scientist, Rocks in Your Head, Downtown Music Gallery, Earwax, Soundfix, Something Else, that newish place on grand...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 October 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

i like that place on grand a lot--the couple who own it are really sweethearts, and they get some decent stuff in at good prices. recently found there: robert ashley LPs, blind lemon jefferson & charley patton comps, aphrodites child LP.

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Sunday, 8 October 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

Oh excellent, thank you for the names, Selzer.

Well, I know the words to a couple Billy Joel songs due to work experience in a carpentry shop when I was 17... It was unfortunate. Whenever we got to the Cadilack-ack-ack-ack part a couple of the guys and I mimed taking pneumonic riveters to ourselves.

Yes, I am Caleb's friend. Are you his friend who has many instruments (supposedly) and (supposedly) can't play them?

Period period period, I'm not a "guy" I'm I "chick," I thought the "i" in my name made it girlier, but I guess I'll have to take more drastic measures. Next time, floral script font with a pink background!

Billy Joel is underrated. All New Yorker's must come to love and respect Billy Joel. He represents the REAL New York. Jewish, drunk, from Long Island, from the 70s. Bottle of red, bottle of white. Bosom fucking Buddies. I'm in a New York State of Mind.

Yeah, the store on Grand I only checked out for a few minutes, but I noticed a copy of Rubber Soul for like 3 bucks and that told me all I need to know. Any used vinyl store that knows you don't have to take every old record and stick it in a plastic bag and sell it for 13 dollars is ok in my book. I miss the days of going to record stores and paying 1,2,3,4 or even 5 dollars for standar rock records of which there are millions of copies floating around.

Now to find out if they need my guruesque music knowledge (ha).

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Sunday, 8 October 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

when we say "place on grand", you mean towards the river on berry? kind of like a would be punk shop? i got the slits - cut there for cheap. they seemed to still be building the store as i shopped. or are we talking about the marquise people?

chakra khan chakra khan (sanskrit), Sunday, 8 October 2006 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

All New Yorker's must come to love and respect Billy Joel.

A fact I learned very, very early in life.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 8 October 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

the punk shop on grand, passout, is not very good. even if they sold every record they owned i don't know how they could pay rent. i mean, and i think other folks mean, marquise. which i like.

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Sunday, 8 October 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

i like marquise, though i didn't find much. very fair prices and will go back. its funny you should say that about the punk place, as the entire time i was there i was wondering how they could afford to operate the place and keep it afloat.

what is going on with rocks in your head? i work near the old prince st location and miss it. is it up and running in w'burg? more space, more stock?

Dude, honestly, do you really expect to find a job this way?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 9 October 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

POUND ONE PAVEMENT

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 9 October 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

Etherea was there last I checked. I'm talking about Marquis, never been to Passout, forgot about it, though I know people who are friends with those folks.

How can she pound the pavement if she doesn't even know where the stores are???

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 9 October 2006 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

I think Rocks in Your Head is closed (unless it moved)

dmr (Renard), Monday, 9 October 2006 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

that newish place on grand...

grand and what??

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 9 October 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

Rocks In Your Head is over on Roebling and like, North 5th or something, now. It's been up and running for a while! Last time I was there I got the OOP Cromagnon re-ish and some Terry Riley LP. Their stock of used LPs is/was kind of meager at the moment, but William told me that it was because at the old store no one paid any attention to it.

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

I paid plenty of attention to it! That's kind of sad it's gone from Soho. It was the first record store I ever went to in New York.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, it's still going though, so that's great! Is the kerr-azy store next to it still there, the one with the feather boas and sequined shopfront and weirdo bald mannequins and stuff?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

feather boa store is still there I think (or at least the zebra awning is there) but the space that housed Rocks is now a real estate office. natch.

glad it's still around though ...

dmr (Renard), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was wondering what happened to Rocks. I used to go there when I was stuck in a dorm in midtown a few years ago. Glad it hasn't closed. I remember the guy at the counter being weirded out that an 18 year old girl was buying Suicide's Half Alive. Kept saying, "This is a great album!" over and over as I was like, "Uh, yep. I know, dude..."

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Havemeyer? Roebling? Somewhere down there, I always pass it on the way to the massively underpopulated "taco chulo".
