Bloody hell that is a strange bit of accessorising, I wonder what their target market buyer profile is, I'm thinking Bruce Willis circa 'Moonlighting'. (Eeeek!).

lexurian (lexurian), Sunday, 8 October 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

I bet a lot of young guys who were thinking they might get a VW now definitely will. The cheapest is $18k which is pretty good. I'm sure everyone realizes it's not like the guitar is actually free or anything, but it's an easy way for someone to get a guitar without actually going to the guitar store and thinking about it too much.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

This selling of the volkwagen lifestyle more than the car is like what they did in the late nineties with the Trek and K2 Jetta packages, where you had the option of getting ski's or a bike and later a snowboard, to go with the roof rack package. With those packages though you had to get the GLX with the V6 though, at least with this I can get the diesel version. I can't say much for the guitar except that I think Paul Westerberg has one.
This is just like that episode of Arrested Development where Michael gets the Corvette because it comes with a wind breaker.

earinfections (Nick Twisp), Sunday, 8 October 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

I have to admit, when I realized what the hell was going on with that ad, I said, "OH MY GOD, I WANT ONE!"
Just because
a) guitars are sweet no matter what.
and
b) that's just too freaking weird.

BUT: shouldn't it be a larger car? You know, like a tour van? Or maybe a Kiss Volkswagen with an airbrushed Kiss version of the guitar.
Has anyone smelled the new Kiss perfume they're selling now? Wonder what it smells like, fake blood and aquanet on fire...

Andi Headphones (Andi Headphones), Sunday, 8 October 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

It is kind of cool that you can play it through your car stereo.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Sunday, 8 October 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't the Pontiac Vibe have something like an amp package when they first came out?

earinfections (Nick Twisp), Sunday, 8 October 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

except for the VW logos, thats a pretty good looking guitar.

when would you EVER need to play a guitar through your car stereo?? tailgate parties? i can see whoever did that getting shut down real fast in a hail of chants for mellencamp.

i guess you could drive to somewhere desolate and have some

Andi Headphones (Andi Headphones), Sunday, 8 October 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

the legal disclaimer says: "The guitar should not be operated by anyone while the car is moving."

i'm not going to buy one now.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 8 October 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

It's should not. That doesn't mean you can't. Or you just don't like people giving you suggestions?

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Sunday, 8 October 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

dweezil zappa's career fascinates me so much.

ram jam holder (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 8 October 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

He's likeable, I think. I love his first opening line, "So I see you've got a new guitar!"

re: the dweezil zappa lessons

i like how there's only 5 lessons, yet the 4th one is almost completely devoted to PICK SLIDES.

The 5th one gave away all the secrets, though.

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

I hasten to note that I foresaw this.

To wit: back in the distant 80s, boombox-style cassette players often came with aux inputs so that you could run a CD player into them. It took remarkably little ingenuity to discover that with an adapter or two, you could use your older sister's cassette deck as a very cheap low-power shitty guitar amp in a pinch.

When CD players became ubiquitous, the aux input disappeared from most portable stereo equipment.

Aux inputs happily reappeared with the advent of iPods and other MP3 players. When I first saw a car stereo with an aux input, I said to myself, "Bitchin'! With a battery-powered amp modeler, you could use your car as a guitar amp!"

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

That guitar needs a set up...

Magnakai (Magnakai), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

They could have saved all those R&D dollars they spent on the connections if they'd offered a drum kit.

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

So how is it run into the stereo? Is there just a cord that runs from the guitars 1/4 inch stereo into the headphone size input of the car?

Period period period (Period period period), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

(It says it has an onboard preamp, which I would take to mean that there's a 1/4" input with some sort of emulation/modeling into the stereo.)

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

the future

GW: how did you get the guitar sound on your new single 'slavengrooven'?
tom morello: well, i ran my telecaster into a whammy pedal, a tube screamer, and then straight into a stack of volkswagens

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

I bet the guitar sucks as a regular guitar and the car stereo sucks as a regular stereo. If the stereo has any specialty parts, it seems like you'd have a hard time getting it repaired at the local garage once it's a huge failure and they stop making it.
