would anybody like to please recommend to me the definitive (or merely very good) recordings of the following:

Holst's Planet's Suite (with the crushing Mars movement, obv)
Stravinski's Rite of Spring (made 'em go buck wild in Paree!!)
Bartok's String Quartets

thanks in advance

As mentioned on my totally ignored thread last week, I really like the Quator Vegh recordings of Bartok.

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Monday, 9 October 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

For Bartók, I've heard good things about the Tákacs Quartet recordings. For the Rites of Spring, I like the piano version that Fazil Say did a few years ago but it's of course highly unorthodox. For orchestral versions, you could try Charles Dutoit or Pierre Boulez. For Holst, I have a Bernstein version in Quadrophony (!) with great cover art but that doesn't make the original piece any good any way so just get the one with the best sleeve if you have to get it at all.
