I stuck in a copy of Pearl Jam's "Ten" and it asked me whether it was "Ten" or "Gish by the Smashing Pumpkins. Is this a mistake on the part of a compiler or do these two albums just happen to have the same track-lengths?

Gracenote is yr slightly trendy uncle.

It's an easy mistake.

Happened to me the other day with Johnny Cash's American IV - in fact, I think the alternate might have been Gish! Programming error?

Why are you guys so ashamed of liking Gish? Just admit it, dude.

Flavour-Of-The-Month-Hipster-Name-Drop-Influence List:
1.Joy Division
2.Bruce Springsteen
2.Gish
All part of the master plan guys.

nine months pass...

Re-ripping a few albums tonight, got some really, REALLY weird results in iTunes (which I think uses Gracenote)- on Kaos & Sal P's Collectors Series mix, someone entered Map of Africa's "Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys" as "Blackskin Blue Eyed Nigger" (!) and the artist Fist of Facts as "Ass Full With Fists" (!!). Someone has issues.

Second was Michael England's "MEAM" album on Skam- none of the tracks have titles, but someone decided to give them som, all taken from David Foster Wallace's Broom of the System, like "Norman Bombardini" and "Feed the Leg." Fucking weird.

'ass full with fists' would be an excellent name for a beardo-style band, you must admit.

True, true. I'm just trying to figure out what kind of person buys a disco mix CD and has a problem with black and/or gay folks. Possibly neither and our unknown Gracenote contributor is just an asshole.

i think my copy of selected ambient works II is tagged with all those alternate titles ('cliffs', 'rhubarb' etc) - how official are those?

haitch, Monday, 16 July 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

unofficial, but fairly well-established
