Here is the supposed tracklist for the new Nas album -

[01]Where Y'all At [produced by Salaam Remi]

[02]Hip-Hop is Dead [produced by Will.i.Am]

[03]War (Feat. Damian Marley)

[04]QB True G (Feat. The Game) [produced by Dr. Dre]

[05]Play on Playa (Feat. Snoop Dogg) [produced by Scott Storch]

[06]Blunt Ashes [produced by Chris Webber]

[07]Let Me in the Light (Feat. Tre Williams)

[08]New York Stomp

[09]On the Ave (Feat. Jay-Z)

[10]Where Are They Now

[11]Still Dreamin' (Feat. Kanye West) [produced by Kanye West]

[12]Unforgettable (Feat. Chrisette Michelle)

[13]Carry The Tradition

I'm not sure who's producing the other 7 tracks (assuming this list is 100%), but I know Just Blaze did a track, and I believe Premier is doing a track, and possibly Large Professor.

Anyway, it's looking like a solid list, though I didn't think "Where Y'all At" would be on it, especially as the first track. Plus, where's the track with Rakim ?! Ah well.

December 19th can't come soon enough

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

Something doesn't ring true about this tracklist. He had a song on his last album called "War" and theres a history of people making up Nas tracklists.

Apocalypse '07: Rodney Strikes Back (R. J. Greene), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

I agree that it's weird to call two tracks that, but that one in particular I've heard him mention in interviews for awhile now, especially because he has mentioned Damien Marley's involvement on it.

Still ,you never know

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, from recent interviews (including this one -

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1542740/10092006/nas.jhtml?headlines=true

I know for a fact that #'s 2-6, 8 and 10-13 are on the album. I've also heard meantion of "Let Me in the Light", and I know that he has a track with Jay on there, so "On the Ave" seems legit also.

Like I said, I'm surprised to see "Where Y'all At" on there, but not that surprised. Besides that, the tracklist pretty much corresponds to recent Nas interviews where he's been name-dropping the track names / producers

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

Is that Chris Webber the basketball player?

graf cycliz (graf cycliz), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, same guy

http://xxlmag.com/online/?p=5224

That article verifies -

"Let Me in the Light" is real, and produced by Kanye

The Nas / Jay track (presumably called "On the Ave") is produced by L.E.S.

"Unforgettable" is also produced by will.i.am

I heard at one point that w.i.a was producing 3 tracks, but I'm not sure if that's true anymore.

Still, assuming the list is accurate, this leaves 4 songs unaccounted for, production-wise - "War", "New York Stomp", "Where Are They Now" and "Carry The Tradition".

One of them is a Just Blaze track (I'm guessing "New York Stomp"), so that leaves 3 potentials. I'm still hoping for a Premo track though. I mean, if he's gonna have L.E.S and Salaam Remi on there, he may as well. No Chucky Taylor though, I see.

Nas has right, hip hop is really dead.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

Which song is the one that has the $2,000,000 beat?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, controversy. I see what you did there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

I really want this to be great but the low just-Nas quotient makes me doubtful

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

Play on Playa (Feat. Snoop Dogg) [produced by Scott Storch]

the sound you're hearing right now is that of expectations being lowered.

I'm kind of sick of this attitude that the quick fix of hooking Nas up with some famous producers is instantly gonna yield a classic. people acted like the beats dragged down Street's Disciple, but Salaam Remi and Chucky Thompson did some great work on that, probably better than what a lot of the big names will do on the new record.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

I am sure the title is a lot better than the music.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

You got interested there, right?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

Alex totally OTM, the beats work a lot better when they're subservient to Nas himself.

I mentioned this earlier but i am looking forward to the new Snoop album though, hopefully some solid daz production work. Its amazing to me, a few years ago i never would have said i anticipated the new snoop more than the new jay-z but here we are. Snoop's longevity is surprising.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

I agree, with Nas's last three albums most of the best beats were by Salaam Remi. I really don't think Nas should try to be hip and down with the trends anymore, it works much better when he just does the sort of mature stuff that was on Streets's Disciple and God's Son.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

How fiiting is it that Hip Hop is Dead is produced by Will.I.Am?

mucho (mucho), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Not very. He's pretty good. I wouldn't say better than Just Blaze but lately he's been on fire and is certainly not as overrated.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'll gladly listen to any Will.I.Am production if it has nothing to do with the fucking Black Eyed Peas.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

sometimes, Will.I.Am's choice in sunglasses really bothers me.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck Just Blaze, his beats are worn out at this point. I'd rather hear Nas over Swizz who has been killin it over the past year. If not someone like Swizz or Timbo then I'd rather see him do some low-profile guys or Premo, Large Pro, etc..If hip hop is dead then he should bring back that NY sound.

I, too, am curious about that 2 million dollar beat rumor. I thought it was a Neptunes beat? Something about that story reminds me of the "Wamp Wamp" beat....

Shlomo Shemesh (Shlomo Shemesh), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

THERE IS NO TWO MILLION DOLLAR BEAT

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn’t this album supposed to have a...different title?

when O when will Rick Rubin bring his back-to-basics touch to back-in-the-day rappers

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

if anybody was gonna get the rick rubin b&w video death exploitation shit it woulda been odb

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

well Swizz said in an interview that he did some beats for the new Nas album, including a song w/ Jay.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Damian and another Marley bro produced "Road to Zion" with Nas on Welcome to Jamrock, I'd guess they'll do "War" as well.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

I bet Nas is pissed that he didn't think to call his album Trillmatic a year or two ago

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Alex totally OTM, the beats work a lot better when they're subservient to Nas himself.

This is true, but it doesn't mean Nas can't work with top-notch producers (see: Illmatic), just that they need to be v. aware of Nas's strengths and weaknesses (like Remi is); he can't adapt his hyper-verbality to any beat he rhymes over. When you listen to Nas, it sounds like he wrote his lyrics down first and then tried to force them over the beat; with Jay (or any number of other guys) it sounds more like he's writing to the beat (and with what I've heard about the two guys' writing styles, this isn't that far from the case).

max (maxreax), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a big nas fan, and i used to think that nas worked better when the beats allowed him to move to the forefront, but he slaughtered "hate me now," most of "It Was Written" and that Pharrell beat he did for Charlie's Angels. And it isn't like "Made You Look" and "New York State of Mind" were subtle beats or whatever. Sometimes I think he needs that bombast to take him out of manifesto mode, which I don't necesarially mind but it's not going to win him any new fans.

And yeah, the new Nas should be hot.

Sam Chennault (s.c.), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the 2 million dollar beat doesn't exist, just a story Nas made up and Busta went along with. Too bad, I wanted to hear what a 2 million dollar beat would sound like.

I agree that Salaam Remi and Chucky Thompson did great work on "Street's Disciple" (as did Nas, producing "Suicide Bounce" feat. Busta), but the problem with that album was it's length, not necessarily the beats.

Of any double CD that should've been re-released as a single, "Street's Disciple" would've been a much better choice than "The Blueprint 2".

Regardless, I have a really good feeling about this album.

Personally, I'd like to see him spitting over something like the beat off K-Os' new single "Electrik Heat - The Seekwill". That's some old school shit right there.

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Thursday, 12 October 2006 02:28 (nineteen years ago)

Of any double CD that should've been re-released as a single, "Street's Disciple" would've been a much better choice than "The Blueprint 2".

there was, it was called Street's Disciple II: 14 Songs

http://www.nme.com/news/nas/24675

According to this (and this is really the only new information revealed), there is a track called "White Man's Paper" on the album.

Which doesn't technically mean the above tracklist is incorrect, as he said he was "two weeks away from finishing" the album.

Which could also mean Rakim might be on the album. So much to consider...

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

so this is a rock album then?

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

yes

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'm liking Remi more and more.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

Has he done produced much for other artists besides Nas though? I know he produced several tracks for Ms. Dynamite's debut, and some of those were pretty good too, but other than that I haven't seen his name anywhere.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 12 October 2006 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

I think Remi has this non-flashy, non-synthetic production style that fits perfectly with Nas's raps. As much as I love Swizz, I haven't really dug the stuff he's done with Nas, I think Nas works better with a rootsier producer.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 12 October 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

Biography by Steve Kurutz
A producer and keyboard player, Salaam Remi is known for his reggae-tinged approach to the studio. The son of studio musician Van Gibbs, Salaam first appeared on record as the keyboardist for Kurtis Blow's 1986 release Kingdom Blow. In the late '80s Salaam began mixing records and, in 1992, he produced the reggae group Zhigge. Salaam has been associated with several successful releases including Ini Kamoze's "Here Comes the Hotstepper," the Fugees multi-platinum Score lp and Toni Braxton's "You're Making me High."

So he's been around ever since Kurtis Blow... And apparently he (co)produced "Fugee-La" and "Here Comes the Hotstepper", I didn't know that!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 12 October 2006 07:04 (nineteen years ago)

zhigge! damn....

ethan is it still your opinion that God's Son is totally awesome, I could never get my head around that one

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Friday, 13 October 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

I wish he stuck to guns and named the new album Nigger like he said he would.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 13 October 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

God's Son is awesome, if only you can tolerate the fundie Christian bits (which aren't too many, thankfully). Certainly the best Nas LP I've heard (I've skipped the ones between It Was Written and Stillmatic). "Dance" is still the only rap tune that has made me cry.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 13 October 2006 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

"Last Real Nigga Alive" is fucking mesmerizing, esp. if you're a total geek for early-90s NYC rap gossip. Also a good example of a beat taking a backseat to Nas's incredible storytelling powers. "Y'all don't know about my Biggie wars?/Who you though 'Kick in the Door' was for?"

max (maxreax), Friday, 13 October 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

i love god's son!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 13 October 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

"fundie" christian bits? what??

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

Two other Remi jewelz :

Greg Nice-set it off (minor classic 12"..featured on on of the Funk Flex albums)

Rakim-i get visual (officially unreleased but fairly well known)

He should do a full album with Salaam Remi..and do teh whole album over Incredible Bongo Band samples (like "made you look", "thief's theme" and "serious")..but have another song with a Peter Gabriel sample like "i gotta have it" with Jermaine Dupri from the Big Momma's House soundtrack..but with Puffy instead of J.D..and put AZ and Cormega on a bunch of tracks..and have an Akinyele verse too..

"Remember Brand Nubian - one for all?
who ever thought Ak-Nell would get paid for grabbin' his balls
now i'm in the strip bar, big rap star
time to get laid which one of y'all girls wanna get paid?"

and not let Jay Z rhyme on it or even reference the boring beef..and not let rich European lesbian lookin' Scott Storch's gay beats anywhere near it..and not make any songs abou married life with Kelis ever again.

Dimehitter Dwayne Hosey (dwaynehosey), Friday, 13 October 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

"fundie" christian bits? what??

"Scientists claim we came from apes, but they lies, though"

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Friday, 13 October 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

nas, heaven, gods son

It's becoming unbearable
Making hits is easy
Put a famous bitch on the hook there you go with a platinum CD
I know you heard the noise
Preachers touching on altar boys
Sodomizing not realizing God is watching before the Lord
How can they do the devil's work?
A man giving another man head in church
Hell it hurts just to fathom the thought
wishing that I fled the Earth.

I still like God's Son.

hey jordan!

Dimehitter Dwayne Hosey (dwaynehosey), Friday, 13 October 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

(Yeah, we’re good. I only see the lil guy on weekends though, which is kinda rough. We all moved house to lower central PA like three weeks back but I haven’t found a job up there so I still work at the same place in Maryland, stay with my mom during the week, then drive up there on the weekends.)

But anyway, yeah, Nas. My opinion doesn’t count because the little I’m heard of him hasn’t moved me to wanna hear more. I owned Illmatic when it came out and it was okay, and he had that single from the last album that was jazz-influenced (w/ video) but whenever I try to remember lyrics or music from that all that pops into my head is Kanye’s “Gold Digger”for some reason.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 13 October 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

Hey who's this?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 13 October 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

i'm sure things will work out with a job. good luck.

you should check more nas. illmatic is so revered that it's overrated, but every album is pretty good except for nastradamus. here's a playlist that i made for work yesterday: made you look/hate me now/ nas is like/ if i ruled the world/ one love/ ny state of mind/ ny state of mind pt. 2/ incarcerated scarfaces (raekwon)/ live at the bbq (main source)/ get down/ the message/got yourself a gun/theif's theme/live nigga rap/ you know my steez/ street dreams/ affirmative action/life's a bitch/purple/ project windows/ fetus/ rewind/ just a moment/ the world is yours. his verse on verbal intercourse is one of my favorite hip hop verses ever.

Sam Chennault (s.c.), Friday, 13 October 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

hey nas!

Previewing 8 tracks off the New Nas, with good feedback

One of them is a Salaam Remi track that isn't "Where Y'all At", so he either has 2 tracks on there, or "Where Y'all At" is getting cut

One of the tracks was kept secret, not sure what that means, but hopefully a good thing .... Rakim maybe ... ?

"Carry On Tradition" is produced by Scott Storch, so he has at least 2 tracks on the album

"White Man's Paper" is "War" (with Damien Marley) and is apparentally produced by "Some new African Dude", so there you go

I read an article the other day that said Premier WAS on the record, so I'm hoping that's true

If that review is anything to go by, this will be a siiiick album

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Saturday, 14 October 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)
