They're Going To Be Huge (The ILM Time Capsule)

OK, as a spin-off from this question, what relatively unknown band/artist are you listening to now that will some day be considered great? Don't think so much in terms of popularity, just general recognition (i.e. they can be "music crit. bands" that don't sell in the millions.) Imagine that you have the chance to tell the world about the "Band You Cared About Way Before Everyone Else" in Nitsuh's question, but this time your interest will be documented.

Mark, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The time capsule part -- we'll seal off this question after a while and then open it again in five years, to see how everybody did.

I figure folks from the Dunedin posse will be all the talk of the town in five years somehow. Oh yes.

I'm expecting a shiteload of post-Clientele bands in the not-too- distant future

I'd like to think that the whole Tigerbeat6 posse will become massively famous some day

I don't quite know how to feel about this. I *guess* it's better than cartloads of Belle and Sebastian wannabes, but still.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to say Picastro and Jim Bryson. My track record hasn't been too good in such matters, though. I hope I do better this time!

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

picastro as in toronto's picastro?
the next super group is going to be the perfect mix of rap, rock and party good times.
and the next band i think is going to be moderatly big is this group out of montreal called "arcade fire" easily lovable, lyrics are at least never embarassing (some might even say sincere) decent songwriting and excellent instrumentation. they'll be huge with the college set.

ddd, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Toronto's Picastro, though more in a Mogwai kinda way than a Sarah McLachlan kind of way. Probably the next Sarah-style Canadian artist will be Sarah Slean.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Out Hud. If they ever get their damn album finished, "Dad, There's A Little Phrase We Call Too Much Information" will overwhelm your CITIES!!

Also, Mr. Sack, or Sack International, or whatever Duane Harriott's group ends up calling itself.

Decal. Irish techno act. ONLY GOOD IRISH BAND SINCE MBV SHOCKER!!

Their album is called 404 not found. When I say techno I'm being loose with the term, it's a really great album, and it borders on electronica and strays into lots of other areas too.

Ess Kay, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Picastro should indeede be bigger then they are. I can only think of what fools the twins at Matlock were for turning them down. If life was fair The Peter Parkers would be much bigger as would Mean Red Spiders.
I guess New Deal are currently big, or will be shortly with Zomba behind them. the band Hope, if their lucky rise to Sum41/Serial Joe levels of CFNY infamy, first band from New Brunswick to some how get on the Warp tour.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

I think the guy that said Arcade Fire is still winning though. Even in terms of "general recognition" (as opposed to "popularity"), they still far outstrip the critical recognition of Vocalcity.

Marit Larsen

But now, let's see, whom would I have said in 2002?.... [rummages through old ballots]... Lifter Puller (!) [even though the band had broken up two years earlier], Northern State [whom I overrated, I'll admit, but I do like that first EP a lot still], Gore Gore Girls [who haven't yet lived up to their potential, but I'd still list 'em, as the potential's still there and potent], Serial Rhyme Killers [??? Cypress Hill spinoff, I think, I've only ever heard one track by them ever, "Something About Mary," which is about the Mary you think it's about, perennial Mary, the perfect mix of rap, rock, and party good times, they're gonna be huge, mark my words... everyone else on my ballot was reasonably well known... well, what about the guy who produced Brandy's great "What About Us?"? Who is he? Is he famous yet? What is his name? (I think someone told me but I forgot.)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

This might be slightly different than the thread concept, but I predict that in a decade or two, Will Oldham will be the subject of a huge amount of retrospective attention and made out to seem much more important than he seems now.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

I mean some people make a lot of him now, but I'm picturing members of gold-record-having bands dropping his name in VH1-type docs.

I'm with Dom:

Lily Allen

And here's another one:

Brie Larson, but maybe as a novelist or a college professor or standup comedian rather than (or as well as) a singer/actress

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

post!

That Lily Allen record is going to be massive, she's this odd combination (musically) of Annabella Lwin and Martina Copley-Bird. Frank, you do realise who her dad is, don't you? Oh and Pipettes will do very well.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

lily allen's mixtape is lovely. i like her quite a bit.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

So, Larsen Larson & Allen, LLC

(No idea who her dad is. Just know "LDN" and her blog. I mean, she posts about her dad but in terms of generating baby sisters not in terms of his claim to fame, whatever it is.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

Hurting, I can see that happening.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

Is her dad Ray Allen, former University of Connecticut basketball player? George Allen, former coach of the Washington Redskins? George Burns, former beau of Gracy Allen?

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

you do realise who her dad is, don't you?

I've just Googled to find out who, and I've not been so disappointed since I found out one of the Faders was Midge Ure's kid.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

Comedian Fred Allen?

(OK, I'll stop with the Allens now.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Nahh, mate, it's Keith Allen, innit?

Actually the thing to say to cockblock your disappointment is 'at last, some success for that family! Who knew?'

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 27 April 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

"The 20-year-old daughter of actor and sometime booze-hound Keith Allen," whom I've never heard of, but that's not his fault, as I've been slacking off on my boozehound watching in the last few years.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 27 April 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 27 April 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

i thought the 'ddd for the win' posts were relative to Ess Kay's post for a second there, considering Carriage H became die! die! die! - one of the bestest and most popular rising fame bands in australasia (and a trio of good chaps, too)

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 27 April 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

I think Akron/Family will be considerably bigger in a year or two.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 27 April 2006 02:24 (nineteen years ago)

Frank— Though I like 'em, I've seen 'em enough times to know that the Gore Gore Girls aren't going to happen. Likewise the Paybacks and Dirtbombs, both of whom deserve the notoriety more.
(My only solace is that I was predicting Big+Rich in 2002, though I didn't think they'd get THAT big).

js (honestengine), Thursday, 27 April 2006 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

What do you think's stopping the Gore Gores? Amy Surdu's got it as a guitar player and a songwriter and a singer, but somehow she's locked herself into... I'm not sure what. Settling for a mediocre rhythm section, perhaps? Settling for a girl-groupish garage-rock combination that's her own invention that she could take somewhere but for some reason won't? Maybe she just needs a recording budget. Maybe indie low expectations are undercutting her. Maybe she wants to be small-time.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 27 April 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

The punk single and the fake reggae single that Keith Allen were on are the best things that he ever did, not that that would be hard. He blotted the music copybook immeasurably with Fat Les though. Wot an annoying cunt he is.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 27 April 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

Frank, that should read boozehound and part-time actor with quite a lot of kids, as it goes. EVERYONE in London has a Keith Allen Is An Asshole story, including all of his mates.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 27 April 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

Frank— I just don't think they have the drive in 'em anymore. While I realize that occassionally bands can play for a long time and then suddenly blow up, I think that the Gore Gores are too much of a genre exercise to go anywhere else with their music. While they're consistent and entertaining, they routinely get upstaged by opening acts that have more energy, more drive and more willingness to do the same thing better. And that's a big part of it too— they're doing the same thing that a million other bands have done, and there's too little to make them stand out. Matching white boots don't make up for lackluster performances. And it's been 10 years for 'em, and their releases have gotten less interesting each time out. Which means that there's absolutely no anticipation for anything new coming out of them. By now they're down to a great name and a solid B every time they play. Too much kitch not enough cache. Which, again, doesn't stop me from gladly paying money to see 'em, but I think by now they're better turning into a lovingly remembered cult act (like, say, the Gories) than having any hope of blowing up. It would just take too much change from their formula and I don't think they'll take the risk.
This is opposed to bands like The Paybacks and the Dirtbombs who are phenomenal performers and consistently engaging, yet who likely won't blow up because they're old and ugly and thus will never be anything more than critical darlings.
