Such a nebulous genere, list what you think could be or are the best balearic tracks of all time

one that I had not considered

Men without Hats - Safety Dance

― hector (hector), Thursday, 12 October 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Finitribe - "Detestimony" or "101"

― Clumsy Colin in ACTION BIKER (coach_mcguirk), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Heights Of Abraham - "High Times"

― hank (hank s), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Many Depth Charge songs could qualify, in a fucked up way.

― 0xDOX0RNUTX0RX0RSDABITFIELDXOR^0xDEADBEEFDEADBEEF00001 (donut), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

It seems like Depth Charge comes up in a lot of these types of threads. I have some old 12"s that I need to dig up.

― hector (hector), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

What does Balearic mean? I would have thought it was Spanish...

― naus (Robert T), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

wiki "Balearic Beat" instead of "Balearic" (I needed to remind myself too)

― 0xDOX0RNUTX0RX0RSDABITFIELDXOR^0xDEADBEEFDEADBEEF00001 (donut), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Not sure how technically under the umbrella I am, but, wtf...

Mandy Smith - Mandy's Theme (I Just Can't Wait)
T-Coy - Cariño
Sueño Latino - Sueño Latino [The Paradise Version]
BBG featuring Dina Taylor - Snappiness
Moodswings - Spiritual High (State Of Independance)
Sheer Taft - Cascades
The Blow Monkeys - La Passionara
The Grid - Floatation
Earth Leakage Trip - No Idea
Tranquility Bass - They Came in Peace
Depth Charge - Bounty Killer II

― PappaWheelie: Giving out breaks to the needy since September 25th, 2006 (PappaWh, Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

man i had not thought about moodswings in years! Chrissie Hyde from the pretenders has a credit on that album.

That mandy smith track is pretty cool too.

How about

Throbbing Gristle - Orchids

― hector (hector), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

there's a thread on what it means here What in God's name does Balearic mean?

but i didn't quite get it for a while until i downloaded a few mixes. this guys myspace blog is almost all balearic http://blog.myspace.com/jolyongreen

this comp sorta started setting me straight Cream Collect: Balearic.

and then i was emailing w/the lovefingers dude and he said this: "Yeah the balearic thing is a little ridiculous... I mean what it really is all about is smooth shit that sounds good when your on E in Ibiza... Whatever... I mean, I guess it pretty much means whatever harvey plays, ha. And harvey just says its adult dance music... Whatever the fuck that means."

― jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

but easily one of my fave tracks right now (balearic or not) is Carly Simon's "Why?"

― jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

jolyongreen's myspace page IS balearia defined!

lovefingers has some great taste, but I wouldn't look to him for the definition of balearic.

― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

orchids is by psychic tv.

― stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

doh!!!

― hector (hector), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:54 (twenty years ago)

i like to think of Carly Simon as Balearic

― ;_; (blueski), Thursday, 12 October 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

from the above mentioned blog of jolyongreen

balearic videos galore

― hector (hector), Thursday, 12 October 2006 22:03 (twenty years ago)

driving away from home / it's immaterial.

― pisces (piscesx), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

i love the shit out of that William Pitt song.

― jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

and also really dig "Driving Away From Home (Wicked Weather For Walking)" by It's Immaterial

should i buy the solo Brian Ferry albums?

― jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

very new perhaps, but Reverso 68's "Piece Together" is one of the best balearic records I've ever heard, and I have heard a decent share of old ones too. amazing tune...their whole career can go on for years and they'll never top this....

― Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

1) Everything in the World not by The Woodentops

― Doctor Jaggernathy (noodle vague), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 23:26 (twenty years ago)

That Cream Collect is a great primer.

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 02:00 (twenty years ago)

Grrr I haven't heard "Piece Together", only the Manhead remix. Ronan did you like "Tokyo Disco"?

― Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Yes...tho I kinda feel they are ploughing a sort of lonely furrow now...they are DJing here soon, I might go.

― Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 08:57 (twenty years ago)

I always liked Electra's "Jibaro".

― mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 09:46 (twenty years ago)

i downloaded the mix hosted at Deepsoul3 on the jolyongreen blog and it was the worst of everything i could imagine about Balearic. Gypsy King's lite flamenco, smooth jazz, new age, keith jarrett, an instrumental version of Chris Issac's "Wicked Game" (barf).

― jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 20 October 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

but it did have Christopher Cross' "Sailing" which i have a soft spot for

― jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 20 October 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

"Balearic" doesn't exclusively mean "lite n' trancey"...Nitzer Ebb's "Join In The Chant" is considered a Balearic classic, for instance (though you're not likely to find it on an Ibiza comp)...

― hank (hank s), Friday, 20 October 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

MORE!

not the neo-balearic i mean the old stuff.

my votes:

driving away from home / it's immaterial
first picture of you / lotus eaters
on the beach / chris rea
talking with myself / electribe 101

― pisces, Thursday, 28 February 2008 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

just found a copy of Transfer Station Blue by Michael Shrieve, Kevin Shrieve and Klaus Schulze for a buck. thought it was just gonna be a synthy cosmic album and then the title track came on. so fucking stoked, it was on Harvey's Sarcastic Disco 2

Heard an edit of this on the second volume of Balearica - the Original Sound Of The White Island, it's fire.

Why aren't there more comps of classic Balearic in print, anyway? It feels like the focus is only on new artists and the only thing we have about the history of the genre is that Bill Brewster list.

― Daniel_Rf, Monday, 10 August 2009 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

there are a couple blogs out there that sort of seem to specialize in old balearic-ish stuff--plaidmusic for example, and jolyon greens now thats what i call balearic, though that hasnt been updated in a while

― max, Monday, 10 August 2009 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

those balearica comps are pretty great all around. only managed to get the first one before they all went OOP

Eric Clapton's opening credits song to the Stephen Frears movie The Hit (which is kinda balearic itself, btw - british gangsters road trip through Spain, lots of semi-mystical philosophizing, the remaining soundtrack is by Paco de Lucia.) End credits say he was "assisted by Roger Waters".

― jaxon, Friday, 9 April 2010 04:01 (sixteen years ago)

I think I remember reading that most of his records were hard to come by in the UK and and Europe due to only being released in Japan. I think the sleeve notes of the Mastercuts comp say this. Can't be sure though.

for balearic sets at twilight:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrRvvPJq4c0

Sort of a menacing vibe to this one, like being lost in wilderness trying to make it back to camp before dark falls. Synth flutter that appears later on in the track is a dead ringer for a Black Dog song, maybe a sample i'm not familiar with.

ha yeah gr8080 put me onto this a year or 2 ago, i dont hear menace really, more a hip-grinding sexuality

― Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

grinding is the wrong word. bumping, more like

or i guess the menace i hear is more like the idk 'hostilitiy' of teasing/flirtatious banter

― Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i guess i'm thinking more about the synths underneath, which seem kind of sinsister to me, at least in contrast to the banter. definitely a "losing it on the weekend" thing

― gardener by day, gatekeeper by night (blank), Thursday, 28 July 2011 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

that synth line is so good that it makes it all the goofy vocals and sensual grinding and insistent menace actually work. together. all at once.

danny rampling set from 1988
http://soundcloud.com/dannyrampling/danny-rampling-kiss-fm-london

digging this, it gives me a little more context on how people used these in a set

also good timing since I just read the danny rampling and alfredo/ibiza interviews in "the record players"

― dmr, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

^ awesome stuff but the sound quality is distractingly bad. is record players a good read?

― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I'm enjoying it, the chapters are short so even the ones I thought I wouldn't be that interested in I can read 10 pages of no problem, ya know? at first looking at the list of DJs I thought it might be too uh British for me but actually the northern soul chapters and the Rampling, Ibiza, Hacienda stuff was interesting cause I haven't read about it 100 times like I have Kool Herc or whatever.

― dmr, Thursday, 11 August 2011 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

curious whether I will finish the whole thing though since now I'm down to the bitter end and the last few chapters are Oakenfold, Sasha, and Tiesto ...

― dmr, Thursday, 11 August 2011 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

yea there is always a point in those 'history of the dj' type books/features where it gets way too british and you're just sitting there wondering how it went to quickly from farley jackmaster funk to goldie or w/e

― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Friday, 12 August 2011 00:29 (fifteen years ago)
