"finally we are no one". out may 25th, i think, but on audiogalaxy now. their first album was one of my faves of a couple of years ago, and a couple of listens in this one's also great.

on the other hand i'm not quite sure why i like them so much; i've not been at all into idm for quite a while now, and there really isn't much going on here. i guess it's just nice.

Can't wait...just got Yesterday Was Dramatic yesterday (thanks Andy!) and love it. Bring it on!

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure about the whole album, but "The Land Between Solar Systems" is kicking my ass right now.

eleven months pass...
i heard a song in tower records recently and it took my breath away. absolutely gorgeous. i asked the clerk and he told me that it was mum, the icelandic group. is this album worth getting? any opinions...?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it suffers in the way that most icelandic music does, in that it's too self-conscious and precious. it's a nice album, though. if i'm in the right sort of mood (pensive, sober) i can be quietly, politely blown away by it.

lush, lush, lush arrangements.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like it quite as much as the first one but it was still quite nice. Did the clerk tell you which song it was, Kilian?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

no, he just showed me the record sleeve. i liked it a lot, though. i may get the album...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it red, white or dark green? If red, get Yesterday Was Dramatic, if white, get the remix album Please Smile My Nose Bleed, if green get Finally We are No One. If none of the above, you got me.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

múm are fab

buy buy buy

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes, I like it. But there are definitely stand-out tracks ("Green Grass of Tunnel," "We Have a Map of the Piano") and then tracks that are a bit too noodly for my tastes. I think the first album is both more consistent and more sonically varied, oddly enough.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ditto on the buy recommendation.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I got it as a double 10", which probably keeps it from being overwhelmingly fey, although the sample vinyl static makes little sense in that context. Terrific record.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Better than Manitoba.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

they are best when the girls are singing, and the girls don't sing enough.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Better than Manitoba? really? Cos I was *just* about to go buy the new Manitoba album...should I not, and just be happy with FWANO instead?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 April 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, it is better than Manitoba. Buy them both though. Funnily enough, I'm not sure they are better when the girls are singing although this might be down to my girlfriend's habit of singing along in an exaggeratedly girlie voice and dismissing them as "fucking Isobel Campbells". "Boys love that sort of crap", apparently.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 11 April 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i fancy your girlfriend, Tag. Best. Put-downs. Ever.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"i think i fancy your girlfriend, Tag."

You're only human.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it was the green one, sean, and it and manitoba are next on my shopping list...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

No no no no no it's not better than Manitoba AT ALL! Múm's OK, but it's a bit too twee and inconsequential, whereas Manitoba is vibrant and noisy and much more exciting! Four Tet's better than Múm too; Múm are basically electronic folk music. And don't even get me started on The fucking Notwist.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the fucking Notwist.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Kilian you can have the first Manitoba album if you want, indefinitely, it's good but I am pretty sure I'll never listen to it again. Also I have Pause by Fourtet, same scenario, ALL MY ELECTRONIC FOLK RECORDS MUST GO!!!!!

Note:i don't think I have any more.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks ronan! don't worry i won't *keep* it, but i wouldn't mind burning it and giving it back to you...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Standards by Tortoise is seeming similar to Múm too. Is it all just post-rock?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have that!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Bleah on the Manitoba, my friends. I really really want to love any band named after my home province, but it's merely a pleasant diversion. If I had to do it all again I'd look for it used. The Mum was worth the full-price purchase.

I never thought of a connection, musically-speaking, between Mum and Tortoise, though I suppose if Tortoise ditched their rock instruments and replaced them with toy instruments and then got breathy female vocalists to coo nonsense over top of it, there could be a connection.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it all just post-rock?

Lay down thy fuzzpedals and groove.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
i picked this one up at last. it's very nice, but i'm not sure if it's as good as manitoba. i'm not sure if they're even that similar, mum are more icy and restrained. and quite twee.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

Listening to Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy, and it is better than the last one so far.

Still think Yesterday Was Dramatic is the untoppable one.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

"Green Grass" still awesome

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

a shame this thread descended into Manitoba v Mum, looking back on it

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

the song from the new one that i have heard sounds distressingly like the postal service.

keythkeyth, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

The more Mum rely on vocals, the worse they get. That's why Yesterday was Dramatic and the Please Smile EP were always my favorites. The new one is too precious to stand, which is too bad because I used to love Mum.

Z S, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

i rather liked the last one and hoped they'd continue in that vein with maybe adding back more of the gurgles and blips.
