Atlantic Jaxx Recordings: Classic or dud?

What do you think of this pre-Remedy batch of Basment Jaxx material? Picked it up a short while ago but haven't listened to it much yet. Surprised by how little I've seen it discussed.

Where your new answers at?

Mark, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's pretty much all compiled on A Compilation. The 12" singles were all re-released following Remedy. The best of the bunch is the Summer Daze EP, which has Samba Magic on it. Fly Life from EP3 was BJ's first UK hit upon its re-release in '97. They're all on A Compilation, including another favourite, Corinna Joseph's Lonely. Mind you, the Jaxx still release the occasional gem on Atlantic Jaxx, like Betta Daze ('99), I Live in Camberwell / Hold Ya Lighta ('00) and the Span Thang EP ('01) .

JoB, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Set yo body free, set yo body free, etc. Agruably their best track.

Omar, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not as developed as Remedy but in a lot of ways just as good, at least from a club perspective. lots of classix--"Set Yo Body Free," "Fly Life," "Samba Magic"--but the package's mix-together isn't terribly interesting, which detracts from it some.

M Matos, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

arguably their best track

YES!

Ronan, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what about the Cajmere mix of Fly Life ? almost reaches dancefloor perfection, don't you think?

hi there. i think the atlantic jaxx stuff is incredible. its a rare thing for latin house to be made so far superior by the english than latinos.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

City People was always a fave of mine - apparently it's an alternate version. We R Computa was a really good Kraftwerk homage from the same EP as 'Acid Luv'. What's happened to Corrina Joseph?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

i love we r computa

,,,,,,,,,, Thursday, 23 February 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

sick.

now i wish they'd repress "jaxx unreleased" and "xxtra cutz" because i can't find these anywhere.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

and while they're at it, all of the "jaxx booty cutz" and "jacques da booty" and "camberwell grooves" re-edits. especially the ones of destiny's child "jumpin", parliament "kne deep", buddy rich, stevie wonder's "star" etc etc

and more remixes!!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Long delayed response to Johan, but can't help but agree with him in regards to the Cajmere remix of "Fly Life".

and yes, looking forward to this comp

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Felix' mix of tracks from AJ II is streamed on the Atlantic Jaxx site .

Mind Taker, Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

OMG excitement! But they should have included the Jaxx Dub of Ronnie Richards' "Missing You". On their remix of the Gwyn Jay Allen track is better than the original.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

What Tim said. Plus: "I Live in Camberwell", "Hold Ya Lighta", "Span Track", "Greek Thang", "Acid Luv", "Get Yo Dam Hands Up"...

But especially "I Live in Camberwell"! Leaving that one off is a crime.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 23 February 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

ps - that cover is one of the worst (best) i've ever seen.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 February 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
anybody hear aj2 yet?

a.b. (alanbanana), Sunday, 2 April 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, although I had heard most of it before the compilation came out... Too bad it's shorter edits from the complete 12" versions. It should have been a double CD.

sometimes Joseph's 'Live Your Life With Me' is the best thing they ever did.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

they have all the atlantic jaxx stuff on emusic now. i finally got to hear gypsy beats and balkan bangers and i'm a better person for it.

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

they deliberately waited for me to quit emusic before putting that shit up. fuckaz.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

love this comp

me 4 sounds hot

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

when i posted that i'd heard them on the essential mixes. since then i've looked high and low but i've never found mp3s anywhere. i have mp3s of "buddy" / "star" (the buddy rich and stevie wonder edits) if anyone wants.

very similar in their own way to some of the big tracks making the rounds this year: think mark e's "r&b drunkie" edit of janet's "r&b junkie" and you're almost there (though jaxx add lots of extra noises to their edits)

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

from the 2001 basement jaxx essential mix

Basement Jaxx - Jumpin [Electric Bootleg white label]

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

jameson did a UKG remix that i never heard. i wonder if this is that? essential mix tracklistings can be pretty unreliable re: white labels and boots

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

this is yet another UKG whitelabel of "jumpin jumpin"

yes please

s1ocki, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

oh and btw i LOVE the legit maurice joshua remix of "jumpin jumpin" even tho it's surprisingly mannered - i guess he didn't feel like doing a "i got a big dick" / "bango" ghetto acid track out of it.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

OK i am posting from the pizza shop, my external HD is at home. check back in four hours.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

thanks MJtB

s1ocki, Sunday, 10 February 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

i'd really like to hear them too, would you be able to gmail them to nicheian at gmail dot com (or maybe zshare them on here)?

sorry

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago)

here's buddy/star ... http://www.sendspace.com/file/sejfc8

i don't have the EMs as MP3s anymore. burned to disc but i can rip and share, if you want. that might take a few days, though.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:15 (seventeen years ago)

you know "star" isn't really a re-edit, because they have someone else (corrina joseph?) redo the vocals. it does heavily sample the original ...

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

still need to buy AJII ...

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

thanks chief!

s1ocki, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

"Lonely" is one of my top 20 songs of all time.

deej, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 07:38 (seventeen years ago)

thanks mjbt! im trying to hunt down those essential mixes so once i do, i'll chop out the jumpin track and post a link to the mp3 on here. im also getting hold of a boot of theirs which uses 'start' by the jam, does anyone know this one already?

at their dj set in manchester the other night they played a new song which seemed to have kele bloc party on vocals. it didn't get much of a good reaction from the crowd (late 20s/early 30s) and for some reason they even played it twice!

NI, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 12:13 (seventeen years ago)

yeah this is the one with the Eminem 'My Mom does more dope than I do' line over the 'Start' bassline - they played it in a live gig I recorded from Radio 1 eight years ago. sound quality isn't great but i could send this if u want.

Oh wow I never knew about AJ2, missed this thread the first time around I guess. Anyway, the original Atlantic Jaxx comp is totally classic. Need to get my hands on #2. Awesomezzzzzz!
