They're a bit dull. Although my friend Paul did some remixes for them that made them sound a lot better. In all seriousness though, they've released a couple of nice poppy singles and a fair bit more of soppy indie dross.

Oklahoma is a top album. They've got 3 gigs at the Borderline this month! I'll be at the one this coming Monday. Anyone else?

I'll be there WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER TO 'SET TO' those bastards faces. I think they're getting no press because their uninspired tossed off derivative dull as Deptford pish doesn't deserve it but that of course, is just my opinion. WHICH IS KORREKT. A sample of a very well known indie kid approved soul track (which is actually good but now RUINED for me) with TRITE BOLLOX ovah the top != GRATE.

I think bands should haf to go through SAS: ARE YOU TUFF ENUFF style training to get press THEN we will see who deserves valuable column inches. MAJOR K-BLIMEY vs those lily livered Spearmint saps? Smarten up soldier your guitar trudgery will do you no good when going over the top!!!

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Give me that constructive criticism first though!

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw them live and they were neither fragrant nor pongy. What was notable was the fervour of some of their fans. There was one chap there who insisted to me that this was his 24th Spearmint gig!

Daniel, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Really ace gig last night. Not that any of you care :-(

Got another freebie (2 in a week!) on the door for being in the first 20 or so in. I'd probably have enjoyed it just as much if I was in any old cellar with their music played loud, cos it really is beautiful stuff. As you can see I'm a bit of a philistine about the advantages of live music, but it was nice to see them. Shirley really does look like Jarvis, though he looked more like Wally/Waldo in his red/white stripey top! Not packed at all, so I might go to the rest of the mini-residency, getting tix on door.

As you were.

three years pass...
An angry, energised pop brew of Belle and Sebastian and Half Man Half Biscuit (I presume they got played a lot on John Peel...) - at least on the evidence of "Say Something Else" (from their 2004 album, "A Leopard and Other Stories"). The singer has much of Nigel Blackwell's wit and amusing, saddening world-weary delivery; sarcastically and righteously ripping into TV police shows, Hollywood, British cinema...

I really really really really really love that one song of theirs that samples "Out on the Floor" by Dobie Gray.
