Rhino's WHAT IT IS box , the rare-ish Funk/Soul thingy late 60s/early 70s- as awesome as it seems?

Pitchfork reviewed this today, sounds absolutely necessary. Anyone got it or have an opinion? Pricey, perhaps a suitable Xmas gift...

(sorry if this has been covered, search didn't turn up anything)

Entertainment Weekly gave it a good review, have not heard it yet.

ooh I saw this in the record store today, didn't know what it was...

sleeve version 2.0 (sleeve testing), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 01:40 (eighteen years ago) link

I have it and love it...in box set terms, it's every bit as essential as NUGGETS and the first two Stax boxes (haven't gotten the third yet). It does get a little too disco/fusiony on disc 4, but the rest more than makes up for it. Buy it.

(This box also got a positive review in Blender, but the writer gave hip-hop WAAAAAAY too much credit - it's like the person couldn't review this set on its' own terms without discussing who sampled what.)

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago) link

It sounds like a good comp, but I'm wondering what it has over the umpteen million other rare soul and funk comps that have been released over the past decade or so - other than maybe the backing of a big label and wider distribution. And I'm not wondering rhetorically.

yesss

Rev, weren't you raving about The Unemployed to me back at the Blues Fest?

some obvious stuff on this thing, but I still gotta get it...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 02:22 (eighteen years ago) link

i have both the 4-disc version and the special box set of 25 original replica 45s, and fuck yeah they're awesome! even if only for the amazing cover versions. seriously, tho, the original 4-disc pack has got some essential stuff. awesome Oliver Wang liner notes, too.

"Rev, weren't you raving about The Unemployed to me back at the Blues Fest?"

Yeah, "Funky Thang" by the Unemployed - the guy I DJ with at our soul nites has the 45 on Cotillion, and the first time I heard him spin that, it was all over but the shouting...great song.

"some obvious stuff on this thing, but I still gotta get it..."

It's obvious if you're one of those dyed-in-the-wool, heard-everything funk collectors like Dante C. (who is thanked in the credits), but for the rest of the world, there are hardly any overplayed radio hits on this thing...this is far superior to, and digs far deeper than, those IN YO' FACE funk comps that Rhino released a decade ago, which were geared more towards funk novices and 70's nostalgia fans.

PERSONAL TO STORMY DAVIS (AND ANY OTHER CHICAGO RESIDENTS READING THIS!): we're deejaying classic soul and funk at the Hideout this Saturday at 11:30!

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 09:30 (eighteen years ago) link

"It sounds like a good comp, but I'm wondering what it has over the umpteen million other rare soul and funk comps that have been released over the past decade or so"

Ah, maybe the fact that this time the artists are getting PAID? :-)

BUT SERIOUSLY...
There are some significant differences...this mixes up the house-party funk with the jazzier stuff, and it flows together well (a lot of those compilations they sell at Dusty Grooves focus on either one or the other). And the liner notes are pretty thorough (I still see a lot of funk and soul anthologies that have no liners at all, apart from shoutouts to Northern Soul deejays).

BESIDES...me personally, I see no need to compare and contrast with other funk compilations. This box set stands on its' own. I'm a big fan of this music, so it's not like I'm so tired of the genre that I won't be buying any more records in that vein ("well, I already have five volumes of SOUND OF FUNK that I got from Dusty Grooves, so I won't be needing the Rhino funk box"). I just think it's a good disc to own, and as many funk records as I own (both comps and originals), there's a lot of crucial shit here that I don't possess in any format.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 09:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Ok, you've convinced me. Tracklist looks good.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:45 (eighteen years ago) link

this box is great. i have the mp3s but i'll definitely be buying it soon.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:58 (eighteen years ago) link

yah, i want this. i will have to wait until i have more stuff to trade in to the record store to get it though. that goth box is very funny looking! it gave me a laugh when i saw it at the store.

I'm getting this (I sorta get every Rhino box, sad to say), but... "Rock Steady", "Funky Nassau", "Soul Finger". Nitpicking, I know.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 14:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I wonder if all those little reissue labels will ever run out of "rare funk and soul" to reissue and start selling stuff like "Sophomoric Grooves: Deep Cuts from 1970s Milwaulkee Public High School Jazz Bands."

Then again, that'd probably be a great comp.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link

"Rock Steady"

Technically a previously-unreleased alternate take, so even that's kind of not played out there.

I wonder if all those little reissue labels will ever run out of "rare funk and soul" to reissue and start selling stuff like "Sophomoric Grooves: Deep Cuts from 1970s Milwaulkee Public High School Jazz Bands."

Damn straight.

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Also the Rhino comp pretty much sounds better than any funk comp I've heard, even with a little overlap; Baby Huey's "Hard Times" completely kills on headphones.

Good christ, yet ANOTHER 'must-have' item to make demands upon my time and $ and apartment space. And I haven't even fully absorbed that "Funky 16 Corners" comp yet! (Nor found those Black Merda reissues.) Where do I find the time to listen to these?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:41 (eighteen years ago) link

i still haven't listened to the pete rock / louie vega editions of "funk spectrum" as much as i want to.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago) link

third unheard: funk comps from vahid's closet that he bought and never listened to

HUNTA-V (vahid), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:43 (eighteen years ago) link

"Rock Steady" is a significantly different mix of the master version; most notably, it's missing the horns.

As for apartment space, it's a nicely designed box that's about the size of a handful of 45s.

A Radio Picture (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I am annoyed this seems to be the only place one can hear Sly's 6IX tune. (There's one guy with a 45 on Ebay/Gemm who wants $45 for it. uh ... no).

The 6ix cut is also on the UK "Funk Drops 3," though I have no idea how much that costs:

The 6ix cut is really good. I like a lot of this plenty--hardly essential, but fun, though some of the tinklier/flutier jazz cuts are pretty meh.

Someone should release a box called 100 High School Stage Bands From The Early 1970s Alone That Play Better Than The Shitty Indie Rock Band You Like

(1) As somebody just mentioned, "Rock Steady" is a previously-unreleased alt take, or remix, or something.
(2) And they chose "Funky Nassau - Part 2."
(3) There are some popular hits on this box, but they're spread out far and wide; the obscurities take up most of the space.

Kinda like telling an insomniac to "JUST LIE DOWN ON THE BED AND CLOSE YOUR DAMN EYES"!

(And anyways, I'd never even HEARD of that "Funky 16 Corners" thing until it was mentioned in some random thread a month ago or so.)

I can't imagine that the 25x"LP" thing doesn't just mean 25 x 7". You know, that vinyl stuff the kids are into. But yes, the singles box is a lovely lovely thing, even though the 6ix single (whose B-side I've wanted to hear for a long time) isn't in there...
