that's awful. RIP. saw azusa plane live a few times and their records never seemed to capture how great they were live.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 2 November 2006 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

This is completely awful. GOD PUNCH sums it up -- records were great but seeing them live, which I was lucky to do once, was something else. Terrible news.

:-( Oh man, that's sad.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

Weird. He was young, wasn’t he?

I remember trying to order an Azusa Plane EP from him circa 98 or 99, going back and forth about it over email with him. I wanted to order it in CD form, but he was out of CDs, and he was trying to talk me into buying the vinyl but I didn’t want to because I didn’t have a record player – it was just me and him arguing about what format was better with no resolution at all. I never bought anything!

R.I.P.

sad news. the azusa plane were incredibly wonderful live. from what i understand, jason has been very ill in the last few years.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

I was wondering what the reason was for his passing -- hopefully his care was good and he didn't suffer badly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

hopefully his care was good and he didn't suffer badly.

Apparently, it's a little more involved. While I don't know the exact details, his medical problems were severe enough that, among other things, basically left him unable to listen to music so he ended his life.

Still shocked and incredibly sad about this. Jason played a small part in helping me get No-Fi started. He dropped off the radar in 2002 and I wish I made more of an effort to stay in touch.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Tragic. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Sad to hear, made some good music.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh. That's terrible. I really like his titanic, molten guitar sound, at least on the album or two that I've heard.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

i thought he had fallen out of view in recent times, sounds like things hadnt gone well, not good news at all

-- (688), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

devastating news. Jason D. was a good guy. smart, funny, humble, passionate. made some gorgeous music, if all that wasn't enough.

Jason's initial concept that the Azusa Plane would "cease to exist" after ten 7" volumes takes on new resonance.

one with the temporal continuum, at last. RIP.

I saw them do a really eager, angry set at Terrastock II after they had to switch slots to fill in for someone who cancelled at the last minute. GREAT set. Spoke with Jason afterward... he was still miffed, but he was a really good sport about it too. Very animated guy. this is really awful. :(

Saw an incredible Azusa Plane show in St Louis in 1998 on a bill with Low, Godspeed you Black Emperor, and Loren Mazzacane Connors. It was a joyful noise and a refreshing contrast to the doomed vibe of the GYBE set. Horrible news, shocked and stunned, etc...

Are Earplugs For Sissies?
BY: Henry Owings

"Well, Henry you mentioned that to me earlier and it's a hard question to answer because many years ago, I said they were when I went to alot of shows. And I'd see these guys wearing earplugs all the time and it used to piss me off. I'd say "Why are these geeks wearing earplugs?" Then about 8 years later, my ears ring every night when I go to sleep. So now I know why those guys wore earplugs. I still don't wear earplugs. Some times I put rolled up napkins in my ears if it's too much and I want to be close to hear the band. So I think you are sort of a pussy if you wear earplugs but if you don't, you end up losing your hearing and it's not worth it. So I recommend wearing them, even though you're a pussy if you wear them. If you're 17 years old and wear earplugs, you're a pussy. If you're 30 years old and wear earplugs, that's okay. And that is the definitive answer."

Shit, what a bum out. I have a bunch of his records, and really like them.

Sad news. That immense half-hour last track on Tycho Magnetic Anomaly is some of my favourite late night music ever, just sublime.

Rebecca (reb), Sunday, 5 November 2006 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

total bummer, yeah. now i wish i could find my resonating subtleties (i think that's the title... it was on shrimper) cassette.

spastic heritage (spastic heritage), Sunday, 5 November 2006 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

I never got around to hearing any of this dude's music, even when I was really nuts for US drone sorta stuff, but (a) his screed about earplugs *is* definitive and (b)

his medical problems were severe enough that, among other things, basically left him unable to listen to music so he ended his life.

is about the most awful thing I've ever read on here... so, absolutely, RIP

Listening to "Two Views of the NZ Landscape" from the Enraptured 1997 comp right now. Once again, RIP.

Odd to see this thread revived just after I replied to a comment Jason's aunt left on my blog yesterday. It's a public comment so I'll repost it here.

I am Jason’s aunt, he was like a son to me. When I am feeling down about his passing, like today, I search the web to find kind people that have fond memories of him. He was a great guy who loved music. It was his life and all of that was taken away six years ago when he got an extreme case of hyperacusis and tinnitis. To have both of these illnesses is very rare and debilitating. I know he perservered for years and tried every doctor and remedy to find some relief but there was none to be found. I too hope he is in a better place listening to music and playing his guitar and calling all of us “monkeys” for being sad.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 27 April 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

A good way to remember him. Thanks for passing that on.

This is really sad.

Honestly, when we played shows, I would always say 'We don't fuck around with people's hearing'.

I know it's bad-ass to play loud and glamourise all that stuff, but handing out earplugs a la Mogwai really shows your appreciation for your audience that displays how much you respect them.

c21m50nh3x460n, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 17:56 (twelve years ago)

that article is sad and terrifying.

shit tie (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 18:12 (twelve years ago)

my band always hands out earplugs at shows, and i've found that people are very appreciative of it. Loud concerts are not typically a feature but a detriment for audiences. If venues were smart, they would hand out these inexpensive foam things and maybe people would stick around longer and drink more.
