For fear of starting a list thread, please could you recommend and talk about tracks that have great horn sections

Someone mentioned a Ricardo Villalobos track that has a very subtle gyspy funeral march going in and out of it. I recently heard a track by I-Roy called "Red, Gold and Green" with a particularly affecting reverential use of horn instruments being used. I'm looking for more of this kind of thing - subtle horns (or any background instrument or vocal for that matter) that kind of makes the song worthwhile.

You'll have to say something about the track for fear of it being a list thread though!

Vincent Gallo - "I Wrote This Song For The Girl Paris Hilton"

a moody masterpiece...the horn "riff" (if that's what you call it) is watery, looped over and over to hypnotizing effect...

also:

Scritti Politt -"Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry For Loverboy)"

the weakest Miles Davis solo ever, but somehow appropriate for this sweet-yet-morose track...

But of course, list threads can and often do have comments, as anyone capable of scrolling through a thread would discover.

(Well okay, maybe not often, but sometimes, and it's a shame to lump something tracking people's favorite albums of '06 in with pointless list threads.)

Kode 9: "9 Samurai"

Wonderful stuff. The percussion is great, but it's the recurring horn refrain that makes this track special. You can hear a clip here if you're interested:

Have just listened to Boo Radleys' Ev. Alright 4EVA for the first time in years, the horns at the end of Spaniard were as luscious and, well, Spanish, as ever. Beats Lazarus hands down I reckon.

spaniard - ahhh what a tune!

that kode9 tune is exactly what i'm looking for.

This is isn't probably what you're looking for, but "Dance" by Nas, a touching eulogy to his recently deceased mom, ends up with a mournful trumpet solo, the emotional effect of which is even stronger when you know that the player is Olu Dara, his dad. This is one of the few songs ever which has made me cry simply through the force of its subject matter.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Another rap example would be "Aquemini" by Outkast: the very simple horn riff kicks in only during André's second verse, which makes it all the more powerful because you weren't expecting it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Another similar tune is "Clockapella" by Cee-Lo (one of my favourite rap songs of this decade): it starts with a rather simple beat and Cee-lo rapping, but as it progresses Cee-Lo starts to croon and more and more instruments are added on the background, and the whole tune ends up with him singing alongside a full horn section.

Sorry, that's "Glockappella".

Seriously, anyone who doesn't know this tune should buy it or download it or whatever, it's the shit!

i need to hear all of these Tuomas.

I'm a big fan of "Rude Rude Rudee (Don't Throw Stones)" by Prince Buster and also Tommy McCook's "What The World Needs Now" - two vintage Ska/Rocksteady instrumentals loosely based on well known classics that use the horn section to full pelt.

Although there is already a thread very similar to this (and I don't mean the rolling salsa thread).

Just one horn, but Dajae "U Got Me Up (Cajmere's Underground Goodies Mix)" is a wonderful mix of Chicago House and Swing Jazz

Zappa made a semi-funney on the 1988 tour (which had a horn section), covering "Stairway to Heaven" and arranging Page's guitar solo for the horns to recreate. It's worth hearing once even if you're a non-fan.

If I never hear another weak-ass, muted, emo, "Miles Davis-like" trumpet solo it'll be too soon.

"Ophelia" by The Band has some great dixieland/New Orleans type horns. Come to think of it The Band has numerous songs with horn sections. Didn't they refer to John Simon as a sometime sixth band member?

What is the Louis Armstrong song that Thom Yorke basically ripped off for Life In A Glasshouse? He played it on a DJ Mix on radio one then mixed it with some Autechre-style DSP stuff.
