According to a source on the Gathering (the Killing Joke list....honor the fire, non-believers!) this just in....

According to another list (and confirmed by Side-Line.com), Frank Tovey died on Wednesday. Apparently, the circumstances of his death aren't known yet.

Truth? Discuss....

Apparently it is true:....

this is from mute.de... thus, the guestbook RK fadgadget.co.uk tells US the same story... At the 3.April 2002 Frank Tovey died completely surprisingly in his house in London. Frank Tovey was a first artist, who Daniel Miller, Gruender and to today boss of the English label, 1979 under contract had taken. Only in the last year tourte Frank Tovey under its alias Fad Gadget as special guest on the Depeche mode " Exciter " route by Europe and had played still in January this yearly of two impressive concerts in Berlin and cathedral. On weekend before its sudden death Fad Gadget guest was with the Swedish alternative Music Awards (SAMA) in Goeteborg. boss Daniel Miller commentated the message at its artists and coworkers with the words: "Frank was the first artist I ever worked with on Mute, he made some very special and influential records and was an exceptional live performer. Frank played a big part in helping to lay the foundations of what the label was to become in the ensuing years, I will miss him greatly. My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to his family."

Damn.

Andy K, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A shame. One of those characters who quite clearly did just what the hell he wanted to.

Life on the Line is one of the greatest records ever made.

Apart from all the guest book entries I can't see any official news sites covering this.

Respect to Frank, a man who connected folk music and analogue gadgets long before it became a fad.

bloody hell. I was listening to 'Ricky's Hand' only this morning and it's about 25 years ahead of its time

Tragic.Frank, one of the most inventive artists in music languished in obscurity whist bland, lowest common denomimnator crap ruled the charts. He will be sorley missed by the few who love genuine music. Play on Gadget

I think I saw Frank play live in the 80s (I get confused between him and Boyd Rice sometimes, so poss. I didn't). "Fireside Favourites" stood out from the pack at the time, that's for sure. RIP.

Frank Tovey still doesn't get the acclaim he deserves.

Fad Gadget were the first band I ever saw, in 1981. Supporting (cough)... Toyah!

Got the double-disc best of the other week, to replace my old single-disc mastered-in-80s variant. I had forgotten how much I loved "Fireside Favorite" -- jaunty analog synth music supporting this:

Come here, baby, in front of the fire
I'd like to look into your eyes
Loosen your clothes, get out of that seat
Come and feel my body heat

Because when I get back home
And see you sitting by the fire grate
I hold you in my arms
Switch on to that real-log fire effect

Saliva's sweetness, we perspire
All things are one in front of the fire
Melting flesh on the front room floor
That's what my fireside favourite's for

And now that I'm back home
Toasting crumpets by the fire grate
Oh you feel so warm
Turn on to that thrill of fire effect

Hey now, honey, open your eyes
There's a mushroom cloud up in the sky
Your hair is falling out and your teeth have gone
Your legs are still together but it won't be long

Your head was on my shoulder
Now I'm kissing the skull
My heart is melting slowly as my senses dull
Now we're just a scab on a piece of wire
All things are done in front of the fire

one year passes...

i've been obsessing over "fireside favourite" (just listened to the nowhere-near-as-good "toasted crumpet mix") and "ricky's hand" having got the mute audio documents box. funny: i posted those lyrics to a friend of mine yesterday. he was blown away.

i'm really beginning to wish i'd paid more attention to mr tovey when the dude was alive. i've got a copy of the "fireside favourites" album somewhere -- had it for 15 years at least -- but hardly listened to it.

ah well.
