Whatever Happened to John Cooper Clarke?

When punk broke, and this exciting new spirit was encapsulated by having Poets onstage reading funny stuff inbetween bands sets to massive heckling and laffing both with and at the man, there was something radical opening up, or so it seemed.

Some years on, the man himself has released a fair few albums on CBS after some singles on Rabid (indie). He did a gig at the After Dark, mid nineties, his 'famous' stuff delivered 100mph speed. A good night.

But where do they go, people like this? I know about his "Nico" days, and all that. More the 'comparitively recently' stuff...

He plays(?), well, reads in Camden all the time. I saw him (in the bar) at the Enterprise a few months back.

Lives in Colchester - or did up to a year or two ago

i saw him live a couple of times in the mid/late nineties and had a very quick chat with him after a show in edinburgh (don't remember it being an interview as such; probably just me being a sad fanboy - qv the human league thread i've just posted on). still love him to bits.

Great stuff. I often wonder about Mark Miwurdz too - he seems to have disappeared ... I last saw him about 10 years ago in Bristol - some of the funniest stand-up I've ever witnessed.

Jez (Jez), Friday, 3 November 2006 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

I saw him supporting The Fall in Edinburgh a few years ago, didn't expect to enjoy it but did in spite of myself.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 3 November 2006 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

He became "Mark Hurst" and I believe he's still going.

Any recommendations on CDs? This is a guy I've been curious about for years.

"World of Mouth"?

Jim M (jmcgaw), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

or "Word of Mouth"?

Jim M (jmcgaw), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that's it. Covers all eras.

He seems to support the Fall quite often.

"Beasley Street" is a pretty amazing song.

five years pass...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01jcdbc

well, that was great.

really really good.

of course there were lots of the usual faces spouting on how he influenced them and all that, but the interviews and clips from live shows(old and present), with and without the music worked really well i thought.

not one single mention of sugar puffs as well.

They can’t find a good word for you,

Yes, JR aside, that was excellent
