don't lie, i know you all did this. this thread is for us to discuss planting secret messages for crushes (or whoever) in mixes we make them, knowing fully well they will never figure it out, or our own desperate attempts at decoding them in mixes we're given.

i'll go first.

girl i'm talking to now who is in a falling apart long-term relationship:

track 8: fiona apple "not about love"
track 14: belle & sebastian "seeing other people"
track 15: kings of convenience "i'd rather dance with you"

things are looking good! your turn.

girl i dated last who had one jewish parent (same as my upbringing), my cd to her:

track 1: the silver jews

i'm not sure what i was going for there.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think there's much decoding to be done there. xp

mcd (mcd), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

But what about decodinging?

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

my mixtape for you, mickey:

track 2: dokken "felony"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 4 November 2006 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

so the idea is to communicate your intentions with track titles? interesting...

I remember an attractive lady librarian I knew once was alway being buried in mix-tapes from her male admirers (including me), with loads of incredibly easy to decode messages. One of my rivals' offerings featured 'Let's Get It On', while mine had Barry Adamson's cover of 'Je t'aime'. Great days Gay, great days, whuh whuh whuh.

Yeh, this hottie I talked to on my commute got one featuring the Replacements' "Kiss Me on the Bus."

Track 2: Yes - "The Clap"

good thread idea

"i be fuckin you tonight" by the notorious b.i.g. = bad crush mixtape choice

manute lol (sanskrit), Sunday, 5 November 2006 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

I gave a then-girlfriend a mix CD, and she sent me a letter asking if "Johnny Are You Queer?" was supposed to be aimed at her. I had never thought of that implication, actually. She liked the song, though, so it was cool.

clotpoll (Clotpoll), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

i want to make a miXey tape :(

roc u like a § (ex machina), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

regarding the girl i started this thread talking about, maybe it wasn't a good move to respond with a mountain goats mix cd.

“And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
“Some day burns down
“And I hope the rising black smoke carries me away
“And I never come back to this town again
“In this life
“I hope I lie
“And tell everyone you were a good wife
“And I hope you die.
“I hope we both die.”

the mountain goats, "no children"

like murderinging (modestmickey), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

“People say friends don’t destroy one another,
“What do they know about friends?”

the mountain goats, "game shows touch our lives"

“Hands up who doesn’t know where this story’s going?
“I’m going to kill everybody in this room.”

the mountain goats, "cut off their thumbs #1"

like murderinging (modestmickey), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

haha you all are pathetic! yeah i did this once and it was horrible, creepy, unsuccessful. if you're doing this you're doomed. that's a prelandfill mixed tape yer making. knowing that won't stop you of course.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

eh, i'd say it is somewhat embarrassing, but "pathetic"? it's not like we (or at least me) make these mix cd's for the sole purpose of telling somebody a message. i just like to share music with people (i like it so much that it's illegal, ha, ha, ha) and every once in a while throw in a little code there. so what?

like murderinging (modestmickey), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

mostly teasing about the pathetic part. but these tapes are usually laden wtih sorta scary emotional diarrhea type songs --- songs that are good, but still.. even if there is 1 of those on there (more like 10) consider yourself fucked. or not fucked.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:23 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sure zach braffe or whatever his name is strikes the right balance. i'm hungover. will stop posting.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

> why not just backward mask your creepy love poems over sunn0)))?

Step 1: give em something they'll actually listen to.

Did you go to jail for trafficking in bad indie? Can the RIAA bust you for leaking the hot new Belle & Sebastian?

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 5 November 2006 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

you are an idiot

like murderinging (modestmickey), Sunday, 5 November 2006 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

'kings of convenience "i'd rather dance with you"'

...except isn't he actually singing "I'd rather dance than talk with you"? Bit of a mixed message.

braveclub (braveclub), Monday, 6 November 2006 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

i gave a mix cd to a married work colleague a couple of years back. probably not a great idea, as a lot of the songs in retrospect seemed to carry subliminal messages that i wasn't intending at all.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 6 November 2006 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Patience and Prudence' "Tonight you belong to me" is always perfect.

snowballing (snowballing), Monday, 6 November 2006 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

wilco's 'i'm the man who loves you' could be misconstrued if you just wanted to put it on a mix cause it's a cool tune

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 6 November 2006 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

And her husband bought that, did he?

You've Had Your Chances (noodle vague), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

hahah, i didn't have to deal with the repercussions thankfully, but it would have been a bit awkward for her to play when he was around
