Mountain's Mississippi Queen: Do You Know What I Mean?

Really, this has baffled me for years. Am I supposed to know what he means? Is it just that whom ever this woman is, she's trampy and does "it"?

"Mississippi Queen, You know what I mean
Mississippi Queen, She taught me everything
Went down around Dick's place, around Louisiana way
Where lived the Cajun Lady, aboard the Mississippi Queen
You know she was a dancer. She moved better on wine

While the rest of them dudes were gettin' their kicks
Boy, I beg your pardon, I was gettin' mine

Mississippi Queen, If you know what I mean
Mississippi Queen, She taught me everything
This lady she asked me, if I would be her man
You know that I told her, I'd do what I can
To keep her lookin' pretty, buy her dresses that shine

While the rest of them dudes were makin' their friends
Boy, I beg your pardon, I was loosin' mine

You know she was a dancer. She moved better on wine

While the rest of them dudes were gettin' their kicks
Boy, I beg your pardon, I was gettin' mine

Yeah, Mississippi Queen"

Oh don't play dumb, you know what I mean.

"She moved better on wine." Another one for the "Ahh, so THAT'S what that line is?!?!" files.

Always loved this song. Great riff, great cowbell.

That's the line I never understood - "When I'm gettin bad food and I'm gettin their kiss - put it in your pocket now I'm gettin mine!"

In the liner notes to the reish of the first proper Mountain album (Climbing!), Corky Laing tells a funny story about how he wrote it.

(In Paraphrase: He was riffing on a theme at a house party he was playing at with his pre-Mountain combo while watching his buddy dance with a drunk girl from the south. Laing improvised some words to try to win over said girl, but by then his friend "had moved into...her dress")

"Was down around Vicksburg" (noted riverboat city on the Mississippi where it borders Louisiana)

Dick's place? What's up with that?

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Monday, 6 November 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

he's talking about Mary Fitton, a lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth, whose identity he'd need to conceal for obvious reasons

Of COURSE!

I skimmed past Dick's Place; I'm pretty sure that should be Vicksburg.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Monday, 6 November 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

another vote for "Vicksburg"

Internet lyrics are always correct - how dare you challenge them?

I remember hearing this on the car radio as a kid. Being from Chicago way, we used to get excited when a real blues rock song came on. Sorry to sound pedantic and boring, I always saw the meaning as, "we learned everything from the blues".

Revived because of Regular Show, I presume? Mississippi Queen sequence begins around 9:00.
