TS: Franz Liszt vs. Davy O'List

OK, so this isn't the first dumb "list/Liszt" joke of November like I expected it would be; that honour belongs to Hank on this thread. (Perfect reply from Andrew, too!)

But "seriously": Franz Liszt wrote "Hungarian Rhapsody #2" which any self-respecting golden-age-of-cartoons fanatic knows and loves. But Davy O'List was (a) Brian May's biggest influence, supposedly; (b) a better Keith Emerson sidekick than Greg Lake; and (c) the only guitarist to play for both Roxy Music AND Pink Floyd (however briefly.)

Ferenc Liszt (as he should be called really) was awesome. In Hungary, I met eight year-olds who could hum any number of his compostions. That's staying power!

fun fact: at the end of 1979, MTV had a poll where they asked people who the most influential musical act of the 1970's would be . . . overwhelmingly, the poll favored
Queen. It seems funny now.

2nd fun fact: translated liberally, Liszt's name in English would be "Frankie Flour."

That can't be right... Are sure it was MTV? (MTV's first broadcast was in August 1981.)

It was MTV, though I probably just assumed in retrospect that it was the end of 1979, becase that would have made more sense. But now that I think about it, it had to have been at least a year (or, I guess, two) later. I stand corrected.

That kind of makes the story funnier, since big early-80s trends like synthpop were already emerging by then. But I guess Queen were a big influence on bands like Def Leppard (?)

Anyway, Franz Liszt was by all accounts an extraordinary performer, and he wrote maybe a dozen first-rate pieces (of which the two piano concertos are my favorites). I know nothing about Davy O'List, so no opinion there.
