Hello there. I'm wanting to read a book about the early early days of bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, and even Crass. Can you reccomend me an excellent book that discusses early British "punk" or "goth" music etc..?

Thank you

Well, did you try Mark Paytress's biography of Siouxsie yet?

No, but maybe you could read something else and give it all up before it gets out of hand.

Simon Reynolds, Rip It Up and Start Again (the chapter abt goth music, talks more about Siouxsie than the Cure)

I thought the goth chapter in "Rip It Up..." was actually waaay off-base, one of the few parts of that book I didn't thoroughly enjoy. A lot of time is wasted taking potshots at Ian Astbury of the ((Southern) Death) Cult and the roots of goth are almost entirely ignored in favor of talking about Echo and the Bunnymen, which doesn't even make any sense. All of which is, I suppose, somewhat irrelevant to a Cure or Banshees fan.

The Siouxsie biography looks pretty interesting and although I have never been able to find copies, so do "The Dark Reign of Gothic Rock" and "Inside the Reptile House" or whatever it's called.

I'd actually be interested in recommendations for what people consider the most thorough and detailed Cure bio. I am a big fan of the band, at least through 1992 anyway, and would enjoy reading something as complete as say, that Clash bio Return Of The Last Gang In Town.

There's a big new paperback biography of Crass, I know I saw it in Virgin/Tower, picadilly circus.

I liked Ten Imaginary Years a lot (even though it stops at KM^3).

For the Cure book, I'd try 'Faith' by Dave Bowler and Bryan Dray which is much more interesting than TIY. TIY is like a fan biog, although it has some very nice pictures.

REALLY nice pictures, plus some hilarious reviews (was it the "Charlotte Sometimes" review that basically said "This is just 'Primary' slowed down, WTF?").

I used to be able to quote by heart entire chapters of 'Ten Imaginary Years'... Good times.

"Simon Reynolds, Rip It Up and Start Again (the chapter abt goth music, talks more about Siouxsie than the Cure)"

Unsurprisingly.
