Okay, this is going to drive me insane: Doesn't anyone know this band from New York called Industry circa '84?

I had this EP when I was 13 years old by a band called Industry. I haven't heard them since and they didn't have much commercial success. About a week ago at the record shop I was looking for a specific record by a band starting with the letter I WHEN I FOUND THE INDUSTRY FULL LENGTH LP "STRANGER TO STRANGER". It was only $3 so I couldn't resist. I always wondered what it might be like to hear them again after 20 years.
I expected just to laugh at the stereotypically 80's cheesiness, but instead I found I really quite liked the music, especially the first side which really shits all over side 2.

So now I love this band which I know no one else who has even heard of. Woe is me.

They are kindof like Duran Duran but more like straight synth pop than any disco influence.

From wikipedia:

Jon Carin (born October 21, 1964 in New York) is a musician, producer, engineer, writer and programmer who plays keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, drums and sings.

Also known as the front-man (lead vocalist, keyboard and guitar player) of the 80s band Industry, whose 1984 breakthrough single State Of The Nation was followed in the same year by the successful album Stranger To Stranger.

After the breakup of the band, he was asked by Industry's producer Rhett Davies to work with Bryan Ferry on Bryan's Boys and Girls album. He then joined Bryan at Live Aid in London where he met David Gilmour of Pink Floyd (who had joined Bryan on guitar). This spawned an accidental twenty year career of assisting other artists in any way possible. In 2006 he toured with both David Gilmour (on the "On an Island" tour) and Roger Waters ("Dark Side of the Moon Live")

Carin is now an established session man and has performed on many albums and DVDs.

Look at the lyrics for State of The Nation. See how timely they are:

I see them marching off to war/they're looking so heroic/
I'm told they won't be gone for long/ but that's a a lie and the
know it/Ten Thousand Gone they won't return, never to be seen again/
Strategic games are all we learn in the end

They say 'Don't you worry bout the situation/a message from the telephone/They're out there fighting for the State Of The Nation/
And waiting for the chance to come home/They'll always have to fight
the alienation/and realize they're fighting alone/When Nightmare memories fade to dust/we'll get back on our feet again/This war has nothing to do with us/but somehow we're so involved in it
There's no place like home
There's no place like home
There's no place - I don't want to be anywhere else
There's no place like home..."

I love Industry, I've done a cover of State of the Nation in fact.

You realize such a claim requires a link to back it up

I will continue to revive this thread for at least the next 24 hours or so. You have been warned.

'state of the nation' is a really great single.

Jon Carin went to my high school, as did Industry's drummer. The drummer was also in a prog band called Cathedral, whose self-produced album fetches the big bucks on ebay.

So this is or isn't the Industry who released an EP in '80 or so of insane d'n'b-synth-pop?

"State of the nation" is a great single, which I still dig out every now & then (oddly enough, most recently last sunday evening). Was unaware of an LP.

Saw the video on VH1's The Vault a while ago. The show's a great source of 80s roffles.

"State Of The Nation" is great. I thought they were Swedish, but I guess I'm wrong then.

Carin also played with the Who on their revival of Quadrophenia a few years back, I think. He's been in the Who and Pink Floyd! Hometown boy makes good.

Well, that's the million dollar question, I.M. and I wish I could lead you to believe that it's actually the same band, but for one thing the singers don't sound alike, and neither is the songwriting style similar. It's quite possible that there's some connection as far as members go, though because the '80 Industry EP is supposed to have come from Little Neck, NY. Two bands from New York called Industry? Of course I don't really know if the Industry this thread is about were from New York City or state or what.

Another thing which is complicating matters is a 12" that came out after the '80 Industry one, in 1981 entitled "Turning To Light". Apparently this was on a Canadian label (Ontario if I recall correctly) called Mannequin Records. I would dearly like to know what Industry THAT record might be, but just don't know if I want to spend the big bucks to find out. Look at this discography for reference:
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Industry+(2)

Also thanks so much to Edward III for leading me to You Tube for the State of The Nation video. I don't know why but it wouldn't have occured to me to look there at all. I wouldn't have thought a video even existed. I still can't figure out how I heard this band in the first place, really. It must have been just some stray accident that someone played something off the radio from it then, because I can't imagine that at 13 years of age I was in the habit of picking up EP's by bands I'd never heard before.

Makes me happy to think Carin has played with The Who, especially since The Who have a new album out that is actually very good!

Fuck you know that discogs link I posted didn't work right. You have to search "Industry" and then pick Industry #2 to get the right page.

Okay so the plot thickens! I lied because as soon as I wrote all that I had to order the 1981 Turning To Light EP so I could see which Industry it was. I got it in the mail yesterday and was shocked to see some of the names of the members of the 1984 Industry on it. The weird thing about it is, it's just a duo of two members of the band they became later - Mercury Caronia and Brian Unger. That doesn't include the later singer and principal songwriter John Carin, although he is thanked on the liner notes, as is the later fourth member, Rudy Perrone. Another thing is, this Mannequin Records is not Canadian at all - it says Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. So I'd say it's beginning to seem quite possible that there is indeed a link between the 1984 band Industry and the 1980 one.

A Chocolate Ball of Sweet Confectionary Fire (Bimble...), Saturday, 11 November 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

I think I could probably get in touch with Macky Caronia. Or point this thread his way. Or something. I'll start asking questions.

Sang Freud (jeff_s), Saturday, 11 November 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Why, thank you good sir!

You know what kills me? Is that I heard the 1984 Industry song "Communication" before I ever heard New Order. This realization just kills me. This is pre-New Order in my life. Unbelievable.
