Germany, pulsing sounds so minimal it feels like you've woken up on the cold cement warehouse floor. I'm going off basically nothing, here. Who are the better names, and what are the better albums, to look out for?

tamburo (tamburo), Monday, 6 November 2006 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

get those monoton reissues

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Monday, 6 November 2006 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

freiland - rot 12"

lots of the maurizio records fit this description... basically any of them except for the first three

also, the dub of round two's (aka maurizio / basic channel) 'new day' probably fits your description. and i would recommend quadrant 'dub' but it's not cold at all, very warm but also extremely bassy, pulsing german minimalism. not even any kick drums, just bass pulses!

okay, maybe the maurizio cut of domina, but not the carl craig b-side mix that is that record's claim to fame.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

it's got a beat like you might expect if you know maurizio, the only other thing are the chords, the same two chords, over and over again, only tweaking the processing, reverb, and delay effects. pretty cold.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

wait, was monoton reissued???? who put that out?!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

only on cd: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Monoton

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

so yeah, doesn't really count, eh? ;)

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

good enough for me!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:21 (eighteen years ago)

if you can afford a cd-dj setup! although i probably wouldn't ever play monoton for a crowd, unless i wanted to die.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

get those monoton reissues

word! also the stuff on sigma editions by parmentier and minit.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

wow, i've never heard of those! can you talk about what they sound like and which releases to start with?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh Wolfgang Voigt, theres a good bet, the stuff from Mabstab 1 : 5 is very good.

Thomas Mehlt (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

that was on the first schaffelfieber comp. when i had to free up hard drive space that was one of three tracks i saved from that album! i didn't know it was wolfgang voigt. even though that cd kind of sucked, it still blew my mind early on in my exploration of techno.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

that freiland track is on there!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

parmentier's first/only album (other than a 2x8" obscurity) was luxsound, where they used cheap fuzzy samplers to make these long, droning tracks with a very vague suggestion of a beat from time to time. it might be too minimal, i don't know, the techno influence isn't really there until the last track. it's mostly miasmic looping drones.

minit were similr but more rhythmic. in a ghostly way. sort of like SND but bleached out and the rhythm is liable to become smeared and indiscernible.

the label has a website (http://www.sigmaeditions.com/) but they've only done 11 releases since 2000 and it doesn't seem to have been updated since 2004.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

where's Thomas Brinkmann?!
--the first series of 12"s (A-Z)--some of which are compiled on the 'Rosa' cd;
--his re-workings of WVoigt's Studio 1 Profan 12"s--
--the RHawtin Variations
all essential

and Frank Bretschneider?!
--Rand, Curve lps, and Komet's Rausch

nerve pylon (flat_of_angles), Monday, 6 November 2006 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

dost thou know the other voigt brother? some of his stuff is pretty up that alley.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 6 November 2006 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

^ otm. when i read pulsing sounds so minimal it feels like you've woken up on the cold cement warehouse floor the first thing that came to mind was Sturmgesten (which isnt very good, but very cold and pulsing)

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Monday, 6 November 2006 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, reinhard is kinda funny. some of his stuff is really great (some of it could even be described as 'warm'), and he does the cold & pulsing thing well sometimes... but other times, it's a bit empty. as in, the cold is not convincing.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 6 November 2006 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

where's Thomas Brinkmann?!

and ester brinkmann, for that matter, totes rennen esp.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 05:35 (eighteen years ago)

reinhard voigt's ready for take off is icy, driving, and wonderful. for me, the archetypal cologne minimal track.

trees (treesessplode), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 06:34 (eighteen years ago)

okay, maybe the maurizio cut of domina, but not the carl craig b-side mix that is that record's claim to fame

Isn't it the other way around?

I highly recommend Seefeel, "Plainsong" (Sine Bubble Dub). It can be found on their "Polyfusia" comp.

minit were similr but more rhythmic. in a ghostly way. sort of like SND but bleached out and the rhythm is liable to become smeared and indiscernible.

I second this (good description, btw).

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 08:14 (eighteen years ago)

wow, i'll have to check out those sigma discs. i have the ottavi thing which is good, definitely not minimal tho

fauxhemian (fauxhemian), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:38 (eighteen years ago)

Monolake - "Plumbicon" (sleeparchive remix)
Teste - "The wipe" (5am synaptic mix)
Phuture - "Spank Spank"
Egoexpress - "Everybody" (Jackmate remix)

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

Not terribly 'sweet' those lot, mind you, but very cement floor-ish.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't it the other way around?

maybe i'm mistaken; both sides are incredible! but the carl craig mix is definitely not cold warehouse floor minimalism.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Atom Heart/Eyephone - Micropossessed

^ great sub-bass pulsing

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

From the Maurizio discogs page (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Maurizio): the CC has appeared on some recent comps, so maybe it's more well-known right now, I don't know. I first heard the M mix on the Tresor 3 comp, which was the case for many, many other people, I'm sure.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

minimal kingz

kotai + mo + bader

HUNTA-V (vahid), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

also what about (old) stewart walker circa "stabiles"

and then there's this beast, on some days "bad friday" is the greatest minimal track ever.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

word, Bad Friday rules

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

donnacha costello, too.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

So what is the difference (besides length) between: Maurizio's "Domina (Carl Craig's Mind Mix)" from the Domina 12" and Carl Craig's "Dominas" from from More Songs about Food and Revolutionary Art? I've never head a full version of the Maurizio track but what I have heard sounds identical to "Dominas."

This is a bit fuller and more techno, but still a lot more minimal than what you'd expect from Walker & Khan.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

"Whimp" by Nonplace Urban Field is also worth looking for, it seems to anticipate the stuff Pole released later on (and it's probably the coldest, least dubby tune Berndt Friedmann has ever produced).
