Least amount of time between debut and greatest hits album?

I always thought that greatest hits albums were supposed to be released after the act's heyday to cash in, not when they're still at the top of their game. But 4 years/THREE albums later, Girls Aloud just released one. I'm sure someone's beat that, but who?

Plenty of reggae artists released greatest hits albums even before releasing a "regular" album, and I'm sure it's true of many in the (largely) pre-album American '50s and early '60s.

It seemed like Shaq had a greatest hits comp after like, one album. Not that it wasn't warranted, just took me aback.

I think Cee-Lo Greene just released one after only 2 proper solo albums.

kinda OT, but one of the funniest things I've ever seen was one of those 20th Century Masters cds of Smash Mouth songs

I've seen one for Verve Pipe; made me laugh

Always odd when stars or acts do this after just 2 albums, although sometimes (as per All Saints) it's because there weren't more than 2 albums made. How many songs ended up on that? You'd think 10 would be pushing it wrt the title ("All Hits"), and I say that as someone who likes All Saints.

3 albums is the minimum for it to make sense, unless you've got a lot of non-album singles. With three albums you can do, say, 4, 4 and 3 (assuming the usual drop-off of great, successful singles) from the albums and then 1 or 2 bonus tracks and look respectable. Due to Girls Aloud's high good singles to singles released ratio they can do this quite comfortably.

4 albums is ideal: 3 songs from each, even 2 from one if it was a bit patchy, and it really looks like you're collating the best tracks. If anything this is when artists (who've made a lot of good singles) drift into the danger zone of not including the best singles ("Born To Make You Happy" left of Britney's greatest hits, WTF?).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 6 November 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Bow Wow Wow has at least twice as many "greatest hits" as proper albums

SAS (sschwartzberg), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

ODB's original best-of is drawn from two albums plus the mariah 'fantasy' remix. then another one came out after he died which just added more stuff off n***a please and 'ghetto superstar'!

Depends a bit on your definition, but wasn't "Hatful Of Hollow" a "best of" of sorts?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

It had peel session versions of the singles so far. So, no.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

ah well it wasn't you see, far from it. the versions of WILLIAM, and HOW SOON IS NOW were the single versions. so there.

pisces (piscesx), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

The first Sir Douglas Quintet album was called "The Best of..." I don't remember if both of their two hits at the time ("She's About A Mover" & "The Rains Came") were on it. At least one was.

The Dusty Baker Selection (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

Leftfield and Tatu did this after two albums (and Tatu didn't even put the Eurovision song on theirs), and had not a lot of singles from each album, although Leftfield did take about 8-9 years to do theirs. Girls Aloud have done theirs in a short amount of time, but they've done analbum a year.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't take long for Jason Donovan to release his "Greatest Hits" album in 1991 already, after having released just three ordinary albums.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

11! including at least one bonus track and one remix. it's a great compilation though.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

ABBA were rather early on too. Their "Greatest Hits" album was released just a couple years after their worldwide breakthrough, containing just a select few of their biggest hits.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

"11! including at least one bonus track and one remix. it's a great compilation though."

Yeah, well, the All Saints albums are both pretty good, esp. the second, so you'd think so. I disapprove in theory though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

It took several years for Jellyfish to release their rather recent greatest hits album. The band only lasted for two albums, from 1990 to 1993, though. Didn't Kula Shaker release a greatest hits based on two albums too?

Leftfield did at least have some early non-album singles to provide too. Plus more or less the entire "Leftism" was singles.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but the Cee-Lo GH has a few Goodie Mob songs on it.

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

Just two Goodie Mob songs, both from Soul Food. But here's something to push Cee-Lo a bit further ahead in the Unnecessary Greatest Hits stakes:

Yup, a simultaneously released UK compilation with a different title, cover and tracklisting! At least this one includes "Trans DF Express," though it shamefully omits "Crooked Booty."

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Pistols: innumerable compilations (Flogging A Dead Horse etc. - just because you know doesn't make it any better) from '79 onwards.

amazed to see jason donovan mentioned

who cares about him?

as for another band i don't care about, silverchair released a greatest hits pretty early on.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Betty Boo also had a Best Of after only two albums (tho like Leftfield it was released many years after she stopped having hits)

not that they don't deserve at least 50 of them, but how many collections do you reckon abba have? i just found a new one:

I think there is another thread for largest number of "best of" albums by the same act.
