GENESIS ANNOUNCE THEIR 'TURN IT ON AGAIN' TOUR
Press Information: London 7 November 2006
Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford of the iconic band Genesis have unveiled dates for their first tour in 15 years. Turn It On Again - The Tour, will see the band play a series of stadium concerts across Europe in the summer of 2007. Kicking off at the Olympic Stadium, Helsinki on 11 June, the tour will hit twelve European countries, ending in Rome on 14 July. At a Pan-European press conference held today at London's exclusive Mayfair hotel and hosted by comedian and lifelong Genesis fan David Baddiel, the band took questions from international media about their reasons for reforming and thoughts on the tour.
European tour promoter John Giddings commented: "It is a privilege to work with one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and to see their musical talent together again on stage will be incredible. The live shows are as famous as their music."
The "Turn It On Again" tour will be travelling to all the biggest stadiums as it treks through Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Germany, France, Holland, UK, Monte Carlo, and Italy.
Tickets will be on sale for UK dates on 24 November and for dates in Germany on 10 November. Other on-sale dates are to be announced.
Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford will be joined on stage by long-time Genesis sidemen, Chester Thompson on drums and Daryl Steurmer on guitar. Two of the world's greatest show technicians, award-winning lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe and acclaimed set designer Mark Fisher, are working on plans for the 2007 Genesis tour.
Genesis has sold over 130 million albums, and is one of a small elite of British bands who have achieved global success and sustained it over four decades. Genesis was formed in 1966 by schoolmates Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips. Its most successful incarnation was the late-70's/80's line-up with Phil Collins taking on lead vocals and sharing songwriting with Rutherford and Banks. In 1987, Genesis played sold-out stadium shows around the globe, including four consecutive concerts at Wembley Stadium.

I've read it's going to draw heavily from their s/t - We Can't Dance material. No thanks.
stadium concerts
Would they still be able to carry that capacity nowadays? I'm somewhat skeptical...

"Banks said the tour would give fans the chance to hear a side of the band that went beyond their hits.
"Genesis has another side to it, a more complex area of music," he said.
"One side gets slightly more attention than the other. We are trying to reacquaint people. Genesis is not particularly a group mentioned very much these days and we want to remind people we did do a lot of things."
this would seem to indicate differently
― kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)
Techically, Banks was Genesis' leader from "A Trick Of The Tail" through "Duke", while Collins took over from "Abacab" onwards.
― Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)
I just hope "more complex" doesn't just = we'll play "Man on the Corner" and "Abacab" in lieu of "Invisible Touch" and "Hold On My Heart".
― Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)
Not sure about that. I think people tend to cast Genesis' pop/'sell-out' phase mostly on Collins' shoulders (because of his parallel solo pop career), but the move in this direction and the songwriting that defined it seemed to me pretty democratic/group-based. Let's not forget Rutherford was doing Mike & the Mechanics ("The Living Years") and Banks made Bankstatement. Also, Collins sat in with the 70s Genesis tribute band The Musical Box not too long ago to play drums on "The Musical Box"...so maybe he is itching to play some real music again after all ha ha. :)

Unclear as of now, but I would say it's very unlikely.

I happen to know that Steve Hackett has a bunch of 2020 dates booked so I'd say it's unlikely. and PG...yeah probably not
Can Phil still play??
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 19:32 (five years ago)
Apparently his son will be doing most of the heavy lifting on drums. (Chester Thompson seems to be out of the picture for some reason.) He still sings of course but he was in a wheelchair for his solo shows last year. Bit sad really.

They should give Phil a throne a la Dave Grohl after he broke his leg. But seriously (that should be the name of an album), I love Genesis, loved the last tour, but that was 13 years ago now, and time has caught up with Phil fast. With his voice not what it used to be and his drumming days over ... eh.
I seriously doubt this would include Hackett. Pete ... who knows. He did that random tour with Sting a few years back and he hasn't put out a new album in almost two decades, so he might need the money. Don't know how they would fit him in, though.

I've been poking my head in at various other forums to see the rumors and while I get the excitement in some corners to see these guys on stage together again, the setlist rumors and wishes are... not good.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 21:08 (five years ago)
setlist rumors? based on what?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 21:11 (five years ago)
they're going to play a 15 minute jam of Misunderstanding that segues into a 20 minute "The Living Years" with guest singer Paul Carrack
― sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:10 (five years ago)
those setlists are just speculation (if you're talking about hoffman forums, which is where this entire tour rumor started after that Knicks game...everyone was pretty dubious but it's more or less confirmed now; yes, just the three of them, no Gabriel. Though I think not doing it is a shame on his part, he did do that Sting tour and how was that more artistically fulfilling?)
I never got to see Genesis despite them being my favorite band for many, many years (part of the issue being that most of the time when they toured, they were not my favorite band). Kind of regret not going to 2007; but I"ll probably try to catch this. Part of me thinks they wouldn't do this if they weren't going to do a good job of it, but then, theyve done plenty of other things to tarnish and fuck up their legacy. Who knows.
― akm, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:10 (five years ago)
what exactly would Gabriel do? the 2007 setlist had like, four or five songs from his era, and I don't know if he would add much instrumentally. and Collins can't drum any more, all he can do is sing
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:19 (five years ago)
he'll play his character on Miami Vice
― sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:21 (five years ago)
i dunno, gabriel could just come and go, and he could also sing some collins stuff. like he did with the Sting tour. yeah i know he's not going to, I'm just saying doing that Sting tour set a precedent that he could if he wanted to; he won't though.
Hackett's tours are fine on their own and thoroughly entertaining if you enjoy those years.
― akm, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:25 (five years ago)
akm otm, that's one of the places I saw the setlists. "rumors" was probably too strong a word, but a few folks over there seem to claiming or feigning insider knowledge.
I mean, I get that they'll never play the stuff I most wanna hear without Peter or Steve, but setlists really heavily weighted to Abacab and after hold no interest for me.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:27 (five years ago)
yea if you like the old Genesis you'd probably dig a Steve Hackett show. his recent albums are surprisingly good & he plays a lot of old Genesis stuff (last tour included the entire Selling English by the Pound album). plus the tickets are way cheaper
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:29 (five years ago)
Good points made on the Hoffman site: what exactly will Phil do during the long instrumental sequences? Just sit there? Get hustled offstage?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:32 (five years ago)
sit there like a zombie ala Brian Wilson
― akm, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 23:45 (five years ago)
but you know, maybe he's on the mend or something.
