I was a latecomer to the Pavement party but I love Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain Crooked Rain. Of course, I like me some prog as well. Now a few times I've heard some later Pavement/Malkmus described as proggy. I'd be interested in hearing a proggy take on the sound of the first two albums. (Something like Murray Street?) What are good tracks/albums to check out?

dog latin mentions Terror Twilight and Pig Lib on the other thread so I assume those are good starting points? I think Sterling once compared "Carrot Rope," which I haven't heard, to Genesis, perhaps with tongue in cheek.

i think wowee zowee is the first regular use proggisms in pavement stuff, and probably the most worthwhile. TT and Pig Lib definitely have lots of applicable shit and you might like them as well, but for me the prog elements they incorporate tend to be my least favorite parts of that sound. also, you've got the later pavement/malkmus "usually jokey in a really unappealing smarmy way" problem to deal with.

what does it mean “hockey sticks”? (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

Look for the song "And Then..." which is an alternate version of The Hexx from Terror Twilight. I don't know how proggy it is, but it does rock.

five years pass...

Saw malkmus/jicks this week in boulder-- pretty sweet show, though some of the long jams never quite reached the climaxes they seemed to be searching for. it was pretty proggy, that's for sure. jicks are an excellent band, they really seem to have figured out how to play with malkmus. whereas he always had to kind of carry pavement up the hill (not necessarily a bad thing) he can groove with the jicks a bit more. anyhoo, just found a recording of the show over yonder: soundcloud.com/fatah-ruark/sm-jicks-the-fox
