two years pass...

hey, i'd like some zouk recommendations too. i realize this stuff is très unfashionable. but some of it is pretty infectious, e.g.:

Nope. I bought a 2008 soca collection recently, but no zouk. Sorry

Liner notes to the great 1988 Virgin Records comp Hurricane Zouk: "Francky Vincent is a cheeky looking chappie who refuses to be photographed with less than two women around him. Known in the Antilles as Doctor Porn, he is notorious for his risque lyrics." His two tracks, "Anti Mako" and "Pina Colada," have always easily been my favorites on that album, but the others (from Zouk Time, Come Back Des Viking Guadalupe, Gerard Hubert, Soukoue Ko Ou -- most of which you can only figure out by looking at the label -- are probabaly worth tracking down as well. Zouk Time was apparently a collaboration between Kanda Bongo Man and Kassav.)

I can also vouch for Vincent's Manze Lola album, which I have on cassette (from France, looks like), though it's been years since I played it. (Interestingly, he is pictured with only one woman on the cover of that. Must have been a slow day.)
