I don't think I've ever heard of any while there are so many about the beatles, the beach boys, bowie, velvet, smiths, prince...
books about the music, the person, specific albums etc.

Dave Marsh's Trapped: Michael Jackson and the Crossover Dream is his best book by a country mile, but it's OOP and ends the story at '85, I believe,

It's both a quickie exploitation book and a well-considered critical attempt at sussing out his meaning on the grand sociological scale, and where Jackson stands within a nexus of American attitudes about celebrity, race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, childhood, talent. If you loathe Marsh, you may not tolerate this book: there's a lot of hand-wringing over what he perceives as Jackson's inability to take responsbility for what he had wrought in the wake of Thriller. But I think Marsh makes an excellent case as to why Michael is worth "taking seriously" (both as talent and sociocultural juggernaut) and as such, worth taking to task for his failures as well.

Margo Jefferson On Michael Jackson 2006

Nelson George The Michael Jackson Story 1984

I started the Jefferson and put it aside for no reason other than boredom. She's a longtime cultural critic for the NY Times. Nelson George's book was a quickie paperback bio that became a bestseller in the wake of Thriller and the so-called Victory Tour. I thought the Marsh tome was Dave at his sendentious worse, the epistlatory format = author giving lecture to empty classroom.

sendentious = sententious

it means moralizing or self righteous

it's weird that there are so few "serious" books about him. it's not like he's the average pop star !

(Investigating further beyond just Google Images, it seems Shieldsnet is an extreme right-wing neo-conservative page, but, well, fuck it. the image was cool anyway :) )
