Now Mike Saunders' recreation does get it exactly right. He has two backing bands. The one that's been playing more commonly is with the guitarist and bass player from the Dickies. Little Dave Teague is red hot on the classic Samoans riffs. And the older backing band was the guitarist and bassist from Backbiter. And they were also really good.

I'm rocking 'Back From Samoa' right now and it's pretty damn awesome, every song is a bunch of fun.

Ha, I just dug out The Unboxed Set the other day.

I have said it before on ILM, and I will say it again: Back From Samoa is perhaps the finest punk rock document ever put onto vinyl. A lot of this has to do with how good it sounds, but credit is also due to the hooks and lyrics.

Looks like Inside My Brain has just been reissued on vinyl, including the Queer Pills 7". Hopefully they'll be doing Back from Samoa too.

I get the feeling they're like the Drifters or the Dells these days--is this a Metal Mike-fronted Samoans, a Greg Turner-fronted band, some other configuration, or something close to the group that made Back from Samoa?

Mike may own the name--he's continued to put out records as the Angry Samoans with a Julie in the band, an Alison, various other people. There may have been some parting of the ways between him, Gregg Turner, and Todd Homer. Anyway, sounds like fun.

yeah "back from samoa" is great but i prefer the "inside my brane" e.p. - less hardcore, more like a condensed version of '70s hard rock. like blue oyster cult in miniature, or something.
