No Thread on them?! Everything I've heard of them I've loved. Should I go see them tonight?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

probably not (no greg [it is no greg, right?] = no cred), but inside my brain and back from samoa are two of the grrrreatest punk records ever

Don't think twice. Even if it isn't the original line up.

You could stay home and poke your eyes out.

Yes, you'll really enjoy them. I saw the original band a number of times on tours in the East, even putting up Mike Saunders. The original Samoans were always better on record than live. Live, they never quite achieved the sound they put to vinyl and they were not particularly tight in performance.

Now Mike Saunders' recreation does get it exactly right. He has two backing bands. The one that's been playing more commonly is with the guitarist and bass player from the Dickies. Little Dave Teague is red hot on the classic Samoans riffs. And the older backing band was the guitarist and bassist from Backbiter. And they were also really good.

lines like "I see black Christmas trees. Barbed wire. Funeral homes. I see your face, forest fires," from "Inside My Brain" seems like one of the most concise and accurate snapshots of the inside of a 15-year-old punk rock kid's brain ever. Something about "black Christmas trees" is just so right.

I ended up not being able to go!

T. Weiss (Timmy), Monday, 13 November 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

So T., you know Metal Mike's also a rock critic, right?

one year passes...

I'm rocking 'Back From Samoa' right now and it's pretty damn awesome, every song is a bunch of fun.

Chelvis, Monday, 3 November 2008 03:51 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I just dug out The Unboxed Set the other day.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 November 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

I have said it before on ILM, and I will say it again: Back From Samoa is perhaps the finest punk rock document ever put onto vinyl. A lot of this has to do with how good it sounds, but credit is also due to the hooks and lyrics.

sleeve, Monday, 3 November 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

Looks like Inside My Brain has just been reissued on vinyl, including the Queer Pills 7". Hopefully they'll be doing Back from Samoa too.

iyo are these guys homophobes or just trying to piss people off bc theyre punks? scored a copy of back from samoa the other day & tho most of the times i'm like \m/ X_X \m/ sometimes i'm like : /

Screw your wife in the behind
Tell your kids you're doing fine
Goddamn no good stupid liar
Sucking dick your pants on fire

HOMOSEXUAL - up the ass
HOMOSEXUAL - make it last
HOMOSEXUAL - jerk me off
HOMOSEXUAL - go get lost!

Found out that your dad was gay
Living life a brand new way
John Lennon was a queer
He screwed Brian up the rear

HOMOSEXUAL - kill Dan White!
HOMOSEXUAL - was it right?

Don't like boys, you like girls
Living in your faggot world
Talking shop with lawyers' wifes
Sneaking out to meet the guys

HOMOSEXUAL - I'm ashamed
HOMOSEXUAL - that's your game
HOMOSEXUAL - where's the blame
HOMOSEXUAL - I can't explain

HOMOSEXUAL - we love you
HOMOSEXUAL - up the ass!
HOMOSEXUAL - Darby Crash
HOMOSEXUAL - make it last

flopson, Monday, 7 February 2011 00:00 (fifteen years ago)

iyo are these guys homophobes or just trying to piss people off bc theyre punks?

Probably a bit of both. But the song reserves most of its (faux?) bile for closet cases.

And I hear a lyric about Howard Hughes in place of the John Lennon one above.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 7 February 2011 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

they're just trying to piss people off (see the story around the Queer Pills EP)

sleeve, Monday, 7 February 2011 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

also as I said upthread this is one of the greatest punk rock records ever, in no small part because it leads to (valid) questions like yours.

sleeve, Monday, 7 February 2011 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

in fact I'm gonna listen to it right now, Green Bay is up 21-8 so why go back to the bar

sleeve, Monday, 7 February 2011 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

idk if i would say this is the sort of thing that makes it great, but i'm really into it esp the vocals

flopson, Monday, 7 February 2011 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

I played Metal Mike's "High on Drugs" on the radio this morning. I don't think he was actually high on drugs when he sang it--I wouldn't take everything Samoans-related at face value. (I don't think they were kidding about not liking Rodney Bingenheimer, though.)

clemenza, Monday, 7 February 2011 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

I was wondering why sleeve was bringing Green Day into the thread until I remembered that the Superbowl was yesterday (I pay no attention to football) and that I never learned how to read

Back From Samoa is a classic for all time. It's such a perfect, snotty punk record.

gallagher 3 (latebloomer), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

They're coming through town in April. Really tempted to go as I never saw them back in the day.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

I get the feeling they're like the Drifters or the Dells these days--is this a Metal Mike-fronted Samoans, a Greg Turner-fronted band, some other configuration, or something close to the group that made Back from Samoa?

clemenza, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

Metal Mike, Bill Vockeroth, and some people I don't know.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

Mike may own the name--he's continued to put out records as the Angry Samoans with a Julie in the band, an Alison, various other people. There may have been some parting of the ways between him, Gregg Turner, and Todd Homer. Anyway, sounds like fun.

clemenza, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 22:37 (thirteen years ago)

There may have been some parting of the ways between him, Gregg Turner, and Todd Homer.

haha this is like the understatement of the decade, no offense!

sleeve, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

Doesn't make sense: they came across as such genial, easy-to-get-along-with folks on their first couple of records.

clemenza, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

nine years pass...

yeah "back from samoa" is great but i prefer the "inside my brane" e.p. - less hardcore, more like a condensed version of '70s hard rock. like blue oyster cult in miniature, or something.
