Henrik Schwarz's Very Own Thread

He needs one, I think. Because "Stop, Look & Listen", his near 14-minute duet with Jesse Rose, is one of my favourite tunes of the year and should have all other epic maximalist dance producers (Villalobos, The DFA, insert name here) turning green with envy. This on top of the brilliant "Where We At", his remixes of Tosca and Coldcut, and the DJ Kicks mix.

And if all that wasn't enough, Tricky Disco hit me up with his live album from last year, and apart from being gorgeous from start to finish, it also includes a live version of his remix of Alton Miller's "Clouds Are Gone", which has to be one of the most stunning, blissful, beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. It's like "Beau Mot Plage" meets Moodymann meets rollicking piano house: eerie pizzicatto strings and delicate tribal percussion and portentous dub bass and a heart-swelling Steve Reich-style central piano riff bursting on-stage at the four minute mark. Followed with these impressionistic blotches of synthesiser, just because he can.

Listening, it makes me wonder: has deep house ever been as good as it is right here? This man is a genius.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 11 November 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

I like, but don't really love his DJ-Kicks (as with Alex Smoke's Sci-Fi Hi-Fi it's just a tiny bit too didactic) and Live, but thanks to your enthusiasm I'll dig out Live again. I hate 'Where We At' and no remixer can fix that. Of course I'm on the look-out for 'Stop, Look & Listen' now. ;)

Omar (Omar), Saturday, 11 November 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

'jimis 2006' (version 3) is really good too.

'where we at' is what slam's 'this world' really really wanted to be.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Saturday, 11 November 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

yay! if there is any artist that could unite the dance faction on ILM, it is schwarz i think. the mix puts paid to the idea that minimal in its most purple form can indeed be deep like deep house insead of deep as in emptied out though the two opposites also play out in his mix. it's a shame to have to use the word minimal because it does not really work as a basic description, but it is the term du jour and while the mix certainly sounds different than anything else out there it is very much a piece of what's happening now. it is hard to describe something with so much raw emotion as minimal.

i was happy to see that he did an RA podcast although i haven't listened yet as the end of this year has seen so many mixes that are worth spending time with. i haven't even caught up with the ILM mix thread yet.

i love the extended "stop look and listen" too. (i think that's henrik's mix)

josh. (disco stu), Saturday, 11 November 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

it's a pavement song, where he goes through all of the different hipster kids on fillmore street

The jam kids on the vespas
And glum looks on their faces
The street is full of punks
They got spikes
See those rockers with their long curly locks
Goodnight to the rock and roll era
Cause they don't need you anymore
Little girl, boy, girl,
bo...................y
Their composures are so distracted
jazzbo's, skinny arms,
And the dance faction, a little too loose for me
Every night it's straight and narrow
Laws are broken, amusing era
walls are broke in the music era
Round and round and round and round she goes....

HUNTA-V (vahid), Saturday, 11 November 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

i like "walls are broke in the music era".

josh. (disco stu), Saturday, 11 November 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Tim, there would never be jealousy/envy from the DFA regarding an artist as great as Henrik. We only celebrate and get quite excited when an artist emerged with talents and beauty like him. His DJ Kicks is my favorite one, maybe ever and the Jesse Rose and Derrick Carter/AME trax are among my fave jams of this/last year....to hear fluid, sensitive and smart music like his makes us do nothing but celebrate, honest!

And the fact that he rocks vocals on his DJ Kicks track is a major bonus. I only hope we can somehow connect wity him in the coming year and get something done together in some manner.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Sunday, 12 November 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

Don't worry Galkin, I wasn't singling out The DFA in particular there! Except insofar as "Stop Look & Listen" reminds me a bit of the UNKLE Remix. There are similarities in the way that both approach the notion of "deepness", the "live" feel etc.

Yeah a hook-up is definitely a good idea.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 12 November 2006 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

No worries at all. A few others said that too....i dont hear it at all, but maybe it is true?

I mean, you have to understand, when you subscribe to evey email weekly newsletter (Juno, Phonica, Picadilly, Beatport, Bleep, Clone, Forced Exp, etc etc etc) which I am sure many here do, and I see all the dozens and dozens of new 12" singles coming out every week, you dont want to listen, you want to crawl under the covers and never come out! When something great rears its head, we do fucking carthwheels, we want to send champagne, we want to just KNOW them in some way. It is inspiring.

That said, I am in London right now and just went to the DC Recordings night w/ Padded Cell Live and J Saul Kane dj'ing and there were maybe 20 people there. That really bummed me out. London man, WTF?

GALKIN (GALKIN), Sunday, 12 November 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

He's great.. will have to search out this Jesse Rose collaboration.
Still love his coldcut remix, have been playing it near constantly for the past few months.

Bn1 (Bn1), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

One of the things I love about Henrik - how he still tends to release 12"s broken up into DJ tools (the non-remixed version of "Leave My Head Alone Brain" is a case in point) for reconstruction in a variety of contexts. A classic practice done too seldom these days.

Also, his track for Diamonds and Pearls (Jimis 2006, no?) is monsterfully big. Love it so much.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 12 November 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

I see all the dozens and dozens of new 12" singles coming out every week, you dont want to listen, you want to crawl under the covers and never come out!

maybe I am a dork, tho I just use Phonica and Decks.De, but I always want to listen, and actually really enjoy listening, don't underestimate the bite sized kick of a 90 second snippet of something good!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 November 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Yay for Henrik Schwarz. He's great.
Can anyone ID the track with the female vocs 10 mins in to the RA podcast?"

This track is great! Reminds me a bit of Luomo's "Body Speaking".

The RA podcast is ace, esp. the first half. I'm not quite so into Schwarz when he's in Moodymann mode (dusty sounding funk and disco loops), if only b/c it's not quite as distinctive. On the other hand, the use of Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" on this is inspired.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

I got the DJ Kicks mix yesterday and it shot to the top of my "Favorite Mixes of 2006" list. And "Imagination Limitation" is gorgeous and works so well in the mix. I need to explore his other work. My favorite mix of "Where We At" was the vocal-less version available for free on the Innervisions website, but that's about all else I know of his work. And yes, the RA podcast is great.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

i prefer the dusty loops parts (quelle surprise) and i just want to go on record here saying that i endorse todd terje and that if you are digging henrik you should go check out the tergotanje reedits.

one of the things i want to also say is that when tim asks

has deep house ever been as good as it is right here?

it reminds me of the old reynoldsism about how house just *never changes*, it's just stodgy and reliable year after year whereas whatever he's always hyperenthusing about is so mercurial and always rushing into the future or whatever. well, the secret about house is that it aside from stodginess it's incrementally ALWAYS getting better, by tiny steps.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 16 November 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

Funny how the DJ-police are taking him to court (in the RA comments section) for over-use of FX. I love that "where's the bass" stuff he pulls all the time. Also love the 2nd part of the RA-mix (probably because that's where 'Imagination Limitation' is and not bloody 'Walking in my shoes')

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 16 November 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

"

I tried to argue this line, or something quite similar, in that thread where Jess broke up with house (circa beginning 2003), but no-one agreed with me.

I do like the more Moodymann-ish Schwarz stuff as well, it's just not as startling to me (post Moody/Parrish etc.) as his more orchestral sound - e.g. "Imagination Limitation", the Alton Miller mix etc.

Basically I like him most when he sounds like he's lost in a Bermuda Triangle constellated by Moodymann, Isolee and Faze Action.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 17 November 2006 01:49 (nineteen years ago)

I had a dream about Henrik Schwarz last night, except he was black, american and kinda looked like Felix da Housecat in his mid-90s chicago jack phase. That felt significant somehow.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:31 (nineteen years ago)

not sure this is the right place for this but ... when did sonar kollektiv get so damn good?

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 17 November 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, they're not damn good, but they're not bad, either! and they're run by jazzanova?!?!

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 17 November 2006 07:27 (nineteen years ago)

Jazzanova were damn good when they were good but, yeah, i agree about Sonar Kollektiv improving a shitload. even though most of the albums they put out tended to have at least one or two good tracks they were mostly dull. the Ame album still suffers from SK politeness at times.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 17 November 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

they release tons of crap....just tons of stuff generally, innervisions pretty reliable...tho wasn't so keen on the franck roger one..the new chateau flight is good tho.

trickski usually pretty good.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 November 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't it just the Innervisions sub-label that's good? As per Compost's Black Label?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 17 November 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

To me it's Innervisions as well as the Trickski releases and the perhaps affiliated "Members of the Trick" releases. What's up with those anyway? What makes one a member of the trick?

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

yes, it does seem to be based about the innervisions label! which i guess is now an independent entity... (sigh of relief)

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 17 November 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm glad we were able to resolve this one.

On a slightly related note, has anyone heard this mix Dixon put out last year?

I've been contemplating making a CD for a friend with stuff like Schwarz, "Rej" etc. alongside Fuckpony, Nass etc, called "The New Deepness"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 17 November 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

A colleague burned Ame's live set at Lowlands from this year for me: it's a MONSTER. Set of the year. Also streamed here.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Sunday, 19 November 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

the only schwarz stuff im feeling is the original "jimi's", "chicago", and the alton miller rmx. everything else has been kinda "eh" to me. i really dont like the "where we at" thing, i wish that would just go away.

pipecock (pipecock), Sunday, 19 November 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Steve Bug play last night and he started with the track Good Dog is talking about. Smashing!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 19 November 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

the tosca mix!!!!!!!!! beautiful.

also, i cannot get enough of the coldcut mix. i knew this already, i am surprised that others don't feel this way. it works spectacularly well tacked on to the end of the mandy at the controls mix.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 20 November 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

I love the Coldcut remix, i think people are just reacting to its omnipresence a bit.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 20 November 2006 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't really get the Tosca mix.

The Wei Chi one is still the best I feel.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 20 November 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

i think people are just reacting to its omnipresence a bit.

The remix isn't bad...it's those lyrics.

Omar (Omar), Monday, 20 November 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

Ronan the Tosca remix is awesome! Surely you love the menacing bass burbles at the end?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 20 November 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

Ok so the Coldcut mix is now "This World" of 2006, surely Robert Owens has licence to use those kind of lyrics....

I must check the Tosca again, I remember being kind of meh about it tho as the shop I worked in closed down that Tosca remix album was one of the few CDs left...hard to feel enthusiasm for it.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 20 November 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I remember now, it's too short!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 20 November 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

The remix isn't bad...it's those lyrics.

sometimes cheesy inspirational lyrics are precisely what is needed to hit the spot. and it's better than 'this world'!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 20 November 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

It is too short, I agree, the last minute or so should go on for about four (x-post)

can't stand the wobbly warping on the bill withers vocal. otherwise it's a great track. loads of dodgy warping all over his dj kicks as well. is it on purpose? it's such a horrible side effect of warping audio and there are pretty simple ways round it.

the warping is a bit of an ableton live thing. it's not ideal but i can deal with it.

juniper jazz (haitch), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

Aside from maybe Imagination Limitation, that remix I think is the best application of the Henrik Schwartz aesthetic, essentially all the right ingredients mixed well, and cooked al dente. Whereas I find a good portion of HS's stuff kind of middling, this shows the extent of the subtle grandeur that is HS at his best.

Edward Saroyan, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 01:05 (sixteen years ago)

I rate a lot of his stuff high...i think 'Walk Music' is fucking brilliant, and love the Amampondo shit too.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

feel like Moodymann dropped the Bill Withers edit a couple months back-- was wondering who did it then, now i'm glad i know.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 01:39 (sixteen years ago)

Mari Boine is definitely his high point by some measure for me, although "Walk Music" and "Chicago" are up there. I dunno, I was crazy about him for a while but as Edward said above sometimes he falls into middling territory. As seen above I really thought he was on to something pretty special for a while (around the DJ Kicks release) but have cooled on him since.

matt2, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

agree that the mari boine rmx and 'walk music' are schwarz pinnacles - would add the alton miller, ane brun and coldcut rmxes too.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

mari boine mix is amazing. i also like the v old "faces and places" one which I prob said here 2/3 years ago!

Local Garda, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

my favorite is "walk music" though i find little to argue with in the last few posts. i like how it's unsettling and uplifting at the same time sorta like a bad weather day where you're really happy anyway.

butter tickle (tricky), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)
