My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow Promotional CD

I'd never even heard of this release until I saw it at OiNK. It's 3 tracks:

1. Only Shallow
2. Sugar
3. Instrumental

Didn't find any info on it at Allmusic, but discogs.com says it was a promotional release for "Inrockuptibles" readers, released by Creation in France in 1992. Sugar features machinegun bassdrum, typically hazy MBV vocals and smearing guitar textures. Instrumental starts off sounding like the backing track to a Digable Planets song, and then the To Here Knows When type noises come in and everything is nice.

Anyone else heard this?

Yup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 13 November 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't heard that specifically but track 2 is from a promo split flexi with Pacific and track 3 was the b-side of the 7" that came with early pressings of isn't anything

I actually own this. I payed quite a bit for it as it's the only cd appearance of "Sugar" which is a wonderful song. It looks like the "Loveless" color, but it's a cardboard sleeve and it's blue.

my flexi of "Sugar" is shot to shit (imagine that). wouldn't mind having it for that, but i'm guessing it goes for... more than three dollars?

The Instrumental is one that was on the free 7" with Isn't Anything. My contacts (KEITH) tell me the beacking track is Security of the First World (?) by Public Enemy. I thought it was taken from Lenny and Madonna's Justify My Love, but they nicked it too. And I suppose PE nicked it from somewhere.

i believe the free 'isn't anything' single had two tracks -- "instrumental a" and "instrumental b."

kevin said two weeks ago on the phone that he's working on compiling/remixing the EP reissue thing now, finally. and there will be three or four tracks on it (i forget which) that have never been heard before. am psyched for that!

excellent news

I wouldn't hold your breath on this one.

PJ Miller... If I did tell you that, it must've been years ago. I haven't heard that track for a long time. PE nicked it from me.

i believe he's working on it (as well as some other really cool stuff) and while he's not the fastest person alive, as i understand it some financial stuff had to be ironed out. that was the main reason for the holdup, not like that kevin couldn't or didn't want to or was too slow.

speaking of "too slow," my 33 1/3 on 'loveless' is out in a month, finally, for whoever cares.

As with Mr. Shields' output, I'll believe it when I see it "in stock" at Amazon!

A perfect Xmas gift!

x-post -- Why, you cynic! (I have read the book and can confirm its goodness.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

thanks ned! that truly means a lot -- i just do not automatically assume that people are gonna care, is all.

wasn't trying to be flippant or overly self-downer-y. just super glad the thing made its way through the last two "stop the presses" moments to finally be done...

yetimike (McGonigal), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, it was years ago, Keithy-Weithy.

The instrumental on this EP is Instrumental B. I used to prefer Instrumental A.

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

Did I repeat what you said?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

*checks* haha twice, kinda. track 3 was the b-side of the 7" that came with early pressings of isn't anything
