he was early onto punk for sounds (and i guess zigzag) in the 70s -- i haven't thought about him in years -- reading the name (and seeing the picture) took me right back

Wow, RIP. I remember him mostly for some great stories on the Damned in their first few years -- lively, entertaining, fun reads.

Yes - along with Jonh Ingham, Caroline Coon and Tony Parsons, GD was one of UK punk's earliest and most enthusiastic champions - and hence I hung off his every utterance. I particularly remember his shaken, has-it-come-to-this, almost hysterically upset report of the 100 Club Punk Festival, where someone was blinded in one eye by a beer glass.
