PLEASE IMMEDIATELY EXPLAIN: What the eff is Wolf Colonel about?

Just went to see Wolf Colonel play after hearing, and liking, one of their songs on Pandora. OK, I am completely confused. Is he like some kind of Borat character? Or is he authentically a guy who feels very strongly that young people across America can experience transcendence, shed cynicism, live life to its fullest, etc., by means of attending and singing along with Wolf Colonel shows? This was really one of the most disturbing and unsettling shows I've ever seen.

Wait, you've heard of them? I assumed this was spam.

I've seen them. It's Jason Anderson's band.

Yes, he is that guy. I thought he was great.

I thought the question as posed was hilarious, by the way.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 05:07 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, not in a bad way or anything.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 05:07 (nineteen years ago)

It's not spam, I'm sincerely curious!

I think I understand for the first time how people who are bothered by Jonathan Richman feel when they see Jonathan Richman.

And I should say that there was certainly a way in which this show was actually kind of great, it's just that it was overshadowed for me by my confusion about what I was actually watching and what role I was playing.

i felt bad for not being able to buy into his 'isn't life incredible, like, aren't stars amazing if you think about it?' routine. like i was spoiling the party. so i left. all too real

Uh, Wolf Colonel aren't around anymore, dude.

The band you saw was Jason Anderson and the Best.

It's one of Jason Anderson's (K Recs) new feel-good band, it's basically a bunch of rock and roll anthems a la Bruce Springsteen.

His last solo record, The Wreath, was quite good, but nothing like The Best stuff, it was mostly quaint little singer-songwriter deals.

My first ever show at college was Wolf Colonel, Calvin Johnson and the Microphones. It was $3 and like 15 people went to go see it. I had no idea who they were, and when I told my stereotypical "indie kid" friend a few weeks later offhand he acted as though I had seen God Himself and that I was an unworthy blasphemer for not knowing who they were. I just thought it was just a pile of pretentious indie garbage. Johnson had the audience whistle whatever they wanted along to his song, and Wolf Colonel was just Anderson (and one other guy..?) banging on really, really shite guitars, being sensitive and singing about how beautiful nature was. The experience was traumatic enough that it helped turn me off of anything labelled 'indie' for quite some time.

brokenfuses, for what it's worth, the show was definitely billed as "Wolf Colonel" and there was no band, just the one guy with his guitar.
