Alice Cooper's 18 inspired me. His delivery in full on angst, distorted, driving music and the perfect confused, bitter lyrics all exist to express the central emotion of the song.
Listening to Bohemian Rhapsody on the radio and remembering how it was covered by different singers on that Rockstar show reminded me of how little today's singers understand the acting that singing requires. Freddy changes the nuances in his voice when the character from whose perspective he sings the song changes his mood. The guys and girls on the show just sort of sang all over the place for no particular reason. I get the feeling that a lot of current singers don't understand how to serve a song.
Not sure how to say what I'm getting at, without generalizing. Let's just talk about songs wherein every element serves the other, and if this is always good (It seems like most nu-grunge songs pretty well suit themselves with their gray mid range guitars and gray guttural deliveries with their gray meaningless whining lyrics all serving the same gray mood).

Talking Heads too - the whole of Stop Making Sense is about 8 or 9 people jumping around on stage but it's so marvellously performed that it could all be just emanating from David Byrne's brain.
I don't agree with Mule Variations. I like Tom Waits and I like a few of the tracks on this but his lyrics on this tend to stray towards the trite, repeating phrases over and over in this dirgey way that just makes me want to switch it off. I think some examples from Franks Wild Years would be better, particularly "Innocent When You Dream".

"Get out of my house" being perhaps the best example.
